CONTROLLER:

feature_main_img_wii_remote.jpg

Interactive java applet that allows you to check out the remote in detail:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/673/673900p1.html

feature_main_img_others.jpg

Motion - Wii remote and nunchuck uses a built-in accelerometer and other motion detection hardware to judge motion, pitch, tilt and depth inside a 3D space. "In games, the Wii-mote effectively becomes an extension of the player's arm. In a game like Metroid Prime, it would become the gun; in a game like Red Steel, the sword; and in Wii Sports Tennis, the racket."

Speaker - This was the last 'secret' of the controller, revealed at E3 2006. It is utilized to provide another layer of depth of sound for the player... hear Link's arrow as you shoot it, or the sounds a lightsaber makes as you dance around like StarWars kid. IGN notes that the problem with this feature is that its sound output is incredibly low quality. To them, it sounds like a speaker included in a Hallmark card. More as people become accustomed to utilizing it, as so far Zelda: Twilight Princess is the main game that has used it.

Rumble - Like controllers past, this allows for the feedback needed to immerse the player. Even more important for motion control, as it provides a fundamental layer which keeps the player connected. "The rumble feature includes only one level of sensitivity, but developers can rapidly turn rumble on and off to simulate light or heavy rumbling."

Internal Memory - The controller features 6kb of memory, apparently utilized to shuttle your Mii's around. So, for instance, if you wanted to share a Mii you made with your friend you simply beam it to your controller and bring it over. Seems simple enough: at this time, no other stated application for this memory has been made clear.

Attachments - The other unique aspect is that you can expand the wiimote with such things as the nunchuck. The nunchuck, for instance, is utilized to bring more traditional gaming experiences forward such as Metroid Prime III and Zelda: Twilight Princess. It features an analog , as well as C and Z buttons. It can also sense motion thanks to a built-in accelerometer.

Wii Channels:

miichanneldv7.png

The Wii console will revolutionize how people play games. But more importantly, it will entice new players into the world of video games by offering a variety of entertainment, information and communication channels that add value to the console and make it a device that the entire family can enjoy. The Wii™ Channel Menu will be the first screen shown on the television, as it easily integrates itself as part of people's everyday lives.

feature_main_img_diagram.jpg

Disk Channel: This channel allows users to play either Wii game discs or any of the entire library of Nintendo GameCube discs.

Mii Channel: Fun 3-D caricatured portraits of users, or Miis, created in this channel can be used on characters across a variety of Wii software. In addition to storing Miis on the Wii, several Miis can be stored in a userʼs Wii Remote and taken to a friendʼs house to play on another Wii console. Each member of the family can have his or her Wii Remote personalized with their own Mii.

feature_main_img_mii_channel.jpg

Photo Channel: This channel allows users to retrieve digital pictures from an SD memory card inserted into the Wii console and display them on their television screen. Users also can manipulate the photos in a variety of fun and creative ways, such as zooming into details or creating mosaics, puzzles or slide shows. Users can even add an MP3 tune from their SD memory card to their slide shows. It provides a fun and easy outlet for people to edit and show off their digital pictures.

feature_main_img_photo_channel.jpg

Forecast Channel: Users can access free local weather forecasts after turning on the Wii console. When connected to the Internet, the WiiConnect24 service automatically updates local weather information.

feature_main_img_forecast_channel.jpg

News Channel: Users can access the most up-to-date breaking news from around the world, organized into a variety of topical categories. When connected to the Internet, the WiiConnect24 service automatically updates this free channel.

Wii Shop Channel: This is where users go to download video game content, including classic video games originally played on the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis and NEC TurboGrafx platforms. Here the users may buy Wii Points with a credit card or redeem a Wii Points Card purchased at retail to add points to their account, then redeem points to download these Virtual Console games. Users also can use points to download the Opera browser used in the Internet Channel.

Virtual Console Channel: After users download Virtual Console games from the Wii Shop Channel, each game will appear in the Wii Channel Menu as its own Virtual Console Channel. To play the game, users simply select the game's channel.

Internet Channel: This channel dramatically changes the relationship between a user's home, the television and the Internet. Users download the Opera browser with Wii Points. Then they can surf the Internet right from the comfort of their couch. They can do quick research while watching a television program ("What was that actor's name again?"), or book travel plans and shop during commercials. The service is compatible with Macromedia Flash and also runs AJAX software.

Wii Mesage Board: Forget hand-scrawled notes tacked to the refrigerator door. Users can leave messages for other family members on a calendar-based message board. They also can use WiiConnect24 to send messages to people outside the home as well. Even better, people can trade photos and text messages with cell phone users. The service also allows for incoming messages targeted at software, such as a new map or weapon for a game. Games can constantly be updated, thereby extending their playability.

WiiConnect24 and Wii Message:

wiimessagebz2.png

WiiConnect24:

Turn the power ON when you play games and turn the power OFF when you are done. This was the accepted way for traditional consoles. However, Wii doesn't sleep even when you turn it OFF. Instead, it enters its low power consumption standby mode, in which it uses about as much electricity as a small light bulb, and maintains connection to the Internet. WiiConnect24 delivers new content even while users are sleeping or not at home, presenting “new experiences that anyone can enjoy every day”, and laying the foundation for a lifestyle in which everyone in the family can relate to Wii on a daily basis.

Wii Message:

The Wii Message Board, which can be easily accessed from the top menu of Wii, is one of the access points for WiiConnect24. Not only can it be used as a household message board, but it also allows users to send SMS messages to family members that are out and about, and even exchange pictures and messages with other Wii users. In addition to these communication features, it also works with the calendar to deliver game-related information. For example, one day you might receive messages from your games (such as event information for Animal Crossing), new items, or additional maps.

Connectivity:

slide72yv1.jpg

Not much has been announced yet concerning DS to Wii connectivity, but it has been confirmed as a system feature. So far the only game to include this feature is Pokemon Battle Revolution, where you will be able to import Pokemon from the DS games Pokemon Diamond & Pearl to play in Battle Revolution.

Wii Sports and Wii Play:

wiisportshb9.pngscreenvf0.jpg

Wii Sports:

This title is a collection of popular sports games and is also a pack-in game for every region with the exception of Japan. The games included are tennis, golf, baseball, boxing and bowling. All of the games outside of boxing use just the Wiimote for controls so that the gameplay is very simple and well suited for immediate multiplayer gaming. This is also the first game that uses the avatars created with the Mii software which allows you to create your own character for certain games. The main purpose of Wii Sports is that of being a showcase title for the controller, focusing on the unique gameplay that it allows rather than amazing graphics.

Wii Play:

Another title that is a collection of games to showcase the controller, this one actually comes bundled with a Wiimote at no additional cost. So far only announced as having release dates in Japan (December 2, 2006) and Europe (December 8, 2006), the US release date is yet to be announced. Much like Wii Sports, the game will feature characters made with the Mii software and many of the games included have been featured in E3 2006 demos. The games that were shown at that time include the Duck Hunt-style shooting game demo and Table Tennis. Games that have been revealed since then including a fishing game, Pose Mii, Laser Hockey, and Wii Billiards.

Zelda:

screenmj2.jpg

The Wii version will launch alongside with the console but the GameCube version has been delayed until December 11th. Miyamoto also confirmed that the differences between the two versions are limited to technical differences. For instance, the Wii version will make use of motion sensitivity and interation allowed by the Wiimote while the GameCube version will not. In addition, Twilight Princess for the Wii will display in a widescrean format at 480p resolution.
