IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL STUDENTS

 

This is a broadcast message being sent to all students to raise awareness of the potential consequences of breaching copyright by downloading and sharing films and television programmes. The authority for sending this e-mail has been provided by the University's Secretary in accordance with the Use of Computer Systems Policy.

 

The Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA) announced last month that it will begin to seek damages through the courts against individuals who are identified as downloading pirated films. The penalty they will seek for this infringement of copyright will be £16,300 per movie.

 

MPAA is aware that there are users on the University networks (including those in University Residences) who have been downloading pirated films and in the past the University has received complaints from the Worldwide Anti-Piracy Agency. Last month saw a dramatic increase in the number of complaints received, coinciding with the announcement regarding penalties by MPAA.

 

When a complaint is received the University has to take action immediately to stop the activity, otherwise we will be guilty of an offence under Regulation 19 of the Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002.

 

The infringement of other peoples' copyright is unacceptable behaviour and the practice must cease immediately. The University will be taking a firmer stance against those who continue this type of activity following this notification.

 

Students who are identified as breaching copyright will be punished in accordance with University procedures for breach of the Use of Computer Systems Policy. This can be seen at http://campus.leeds.ac.uk/isms.

 

I also wish to bring to your attention that a Sheffield student was fined £4,000 last month, in the criminal court, for copyright breach. Users in University Residences should note that if we are obliged to disconnect their internet link following improper use that no refunds will be given.

 

This is a very serious message in the interests of both individuals and the University. Please take heed of it.
