News for nerds writes "

***At the tech talk as part of the forthcoming SIGGRAPH 2004 conference on August 11th, an open graphics file format for the interactive 3D [videogame] industry called COLLADA will be unveiled by Sony Computer Entertainment. *****

COLLADA is supported by major 3D toolchain companies including Alias, Criterion, Discreet, Emdigo, Novodex, Softimage and Vicarious Visions. If you combine this with the recent news that Sony has joined Khronos Group to support OpenGL/ES, OpenMAX, OpenVG and OpenML, it seems evident that Sony is quietly fighting back against the loudly trumpeted Microsoft XNA (/. coverage) with its plan of an open game development platform."

Playstation 3 that Sony will reveal in E3 2005 (see this news ), will probably use OpenGL ES 2.0.

According to Watch Impress Neil Trevett, president of Khronos Group (and Vice-president at 3Dlabs), consortium charged to discuss and define the specifications of OpenGL ES, declared that "Sony will probably use OpenGL ES 2.0 in Playstation 3". "It is a great change" it added bus Sony had as a practice to use an API owner.

Sony wants to undoubtedly avoid spending of the financial and human resources in the development of an API owner whom the developers hardly appreciate.

API such as OpenGL ES 2.0, will be more easily controlled by the developers of plays, since near to OpenGL 2.0 and it will simplify the bearing of plays on the next generations of portable consoles.

OpenGL ES in version 1.0 - these specifications were ratified last summer is an API 3d dedicated on the portable telephones, PDA and Smartphones 2.5G and 3G.

This API is not really adapted to a console of show of the next generation because it is derived from OpenGL 1.3 and treats only fixed functions. However, it is known that the PS3 will be animated by programmable processors Cell.

"programmability" will be with the menu of OpenGL ES 2.0. Our Japanese fellow-member believes it that the calendars of development of the PS3 and OpenGL ES 2.0 are concordant. The specifications of OpenGL ES 2.0 could be announced during the summer 2005.

Sony could also be interested in the other API ones on which Kronos Group works, namely, the API video "OpenML", the API vectorial 2d "OpenVG" and API multi-media "the OpenMAX".
