No word was available on whether the price reductions would affect other territories. The cut, which drops the price tag from $179, cuts under the price of their next leading competitor, the Sony PlayStation 2 video game console, which is also priced at $179. Microsoft claims the price drop serves two purposes, first to sell more consoles and create a larger base of fans and secondly to help drive developer adoption of the platform. There is also some speculation that the development of the next generation console is on schedule for a release in 2005 which could see the company cutting the sticker on the original Xbox once more toward the end of this year.
