You thought you had a crappy day. An 83-year-old woman was rescued by paramedics yesterday after somehow becoming wedged behind her toilet. The elderly woman was rescued about 2 p.m. yesterday, two days after becoming stuck behind her biffie inside her apartment at Fort Garry Place.

 

"Her whole body somehow became jammed behind her toilet," said Winnipeg Fire Platoon Chief Bob Wright. "It was one of those strange occurrences and you wouldn't have believed it even if you had a camera and had taken a picture."

 

The petite woman told paramedics she wasn't certain how she became stuck behind the flusher.

 

She was rescued after a caretaker and building manager noticed newspapers piling up at the door and decided to enter her suite. They found her behind the toilet and called firefighters for help.

 

The assignment wasn't as easy as it sounds. After the water was turned off, Wright said firefighters were forced to pry bolts from the toilet's base and smash it to break her free from the make-shift porcelain prison.

"We were called there just to help lift an elderly woman off the ground," said Wright. "It ended up being a lot more involved than that."

 

The woman was taken to hospital in stable condition. She may have been dehydrated and had a sore ribcage, but didn't appear to have any broken bones and was expected to be OK, said Wright.

 

He credited the caretaker and building manager for being Johnny on the spot, noticing the newspapers piling up at the woman's door and recognizing there may have been a problem.

 

"It's a really nice thing for senior citizens to have someone keeping an eye on them," said Wright. "If they hadn't found her this may not have had such a happy ending."
