For the 27″ options, you could consider the AOC C27G1. I haven’t tested it myself, but from user feedback and my use of other products using the panel, you can expect it to be quite similar to the smaller model we’ve reviewed. A bit less responsive (the panel has slower pixel responses, can’t be overdriven as well without strong overshoot), somewhat stronger ‘VA glow’ but similar image characteristics overall. Or you could consider the ASUS VG279Q, which is the only IPS option currently.

I think the ASUS VG279Q is the most interesting Full HD gaming monitor released for a long time. I’ve received a lot of positive user feedback about it and intend to review it in the next few months. If you can wait for that, great. If not, then I’m sure your son will really love it. From a 95cm viewing distance I don’t really think you’ll notice much difference in pixel density between a 24″ and 27″ Full HD monitor. And I don’t think the 27″ model would be ‘ugly’ from that distance, certainly not for gaming!” To give some additional background, users find it offers rich colours and has a nice screen surface (light matte anti-glare without a grainy finish) and they find the responsiveness strong. Some users who have given me feedback are coming from 144Hz TN panels and they state the image quality of the ASUS is noticeably better whilst responsiveness is not noticeably worse.

3) The Samsung C27FG73 is similar to the AOC C27G1. Except it offers a wider colour gamut (more vibrant) and you don’t get as much flexibility with pixel responsiveness. As I’ve said, I haven’t tested the C27G1 myself so there is no way I can tell you whether the optimal setting on the AOC for ‘Overdrive’ is better than the Samsung. I can tell you that if you intend to use the strobe backlight modes (MBR on the AOC, Impulsive Scanning on the Samsung) then you will appreciate the flexibility you get with brightness on the AOC. With the Samsung many users find the strobe backlight mode too bright. I think the main point you should focus on is the colour gamut. Do you prefer your colours to look vibrant with some oversaturation (Samsung) or prefer a ‘rich and natural’ look with better accuracy ?
