As expected, Lucasfilm and Fox on Feb. 10 announced that they will finally release DVD editions of the first three Star Wars films on Sept. 21 in North America, with international release dates following closely. Lucasfilm Ltd. and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the four-disc collection as the Star Wars Trilogy, which will feature the special editions of the three movies, not their original theatrical release versions.

 

The set will include Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, along with a bonus disc filled with all-new special features, including a feature-length documentary about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films, the company said. Each of the three films has been digitally restored and remastered by THX. The trilogy will be available exclusively as a collection and will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX.

The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely.

 

"We know how long fans have waited for this release and how much they have been looking forward to it, so everyone has been working overtime to make sure that the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is an awesome experience," said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. and the DVD collection's Executive Producer.

 

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi will be available in a four-disc set that includes a bonus disc filled with all-new special features -- including the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films. Each of the three films in the Star Wars Trilogy has been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality.

 

"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer. On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the Star Wars films in a fresh and fun way," Ward said. "We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."

 

The films of the Star Wars Trilogy will be available exclusively as a collection and will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX. All three films are closed-captioned and subtitled in English, French and Spanish in the U.S. Internationally, sound and subtitling specifications will vary by territory.

Όσο για τις extended, όντως μούφα, αλλά απ' ότι θυμάμαι δεν είχαν αλλάξει και πολλά πράγματα...

Ε όχι, αλλά είχαν καναδυό σκηνές που εμένα με χάλασαν. Πχ ένα.... ολόσωμο του Jabba που είχε ένα διάλογο με τον Solo ήταν ελαφρώς....out

Κι'εγώ το ίδιο storm, ήταν επιεικώς απαράδεκτη η συλλογή. Είχε ένα making of για κάθε ταινία και αυτό ήταν...

 

Τι να πω, θα δούμε. ΚΑι μόνο πάντως ότι θα τα δούμε ΕΠΙΤΕΛΟΥΣ σε dvd είναι αρκετό για να... κάνω το πρόγραμμά μου από δω και πέρα με βάση τον επόμενο Σεπτέμβρη

νταξι δεν ειναι τοσο χαλια οι εξτεντεντ καλες ειναι, και τα παραπανω εφεδακια πλουτιζουν την εικονα

Κι εγώ προτιμώ διπλό DVD για κάθε ταινία κι έτσι τους αξίζει γαμώτο, αλλά τι να κάνουμε βρε παίδες; Απ' το τίποτα, μια χαρά είνια κι αυτό. Άντε, γιατί οι βιντεοκασσέτες κοντεύουν να λιώσουν!

 

Όσο για τις Special Editions, περιμένατε τίποτε άλλο;

 

Κι ο Storm Shadow έχει δίκιο, ο Han Solo πυροβόλησε πρώτος ρεεεεεεεεε!

Όντως πάντως, βλακεία το 1 DVD ανά ταινία, ελπίζω μέχρι τότε να αλλάξουν δρόμο πλεύσης...

Προς το παρόν δεν υπάρχουν ενδείξεις ότι οι ΚΟΜΜΕΝΕΣ ΣΚΗΝΕΣ από τις τρεις ταινίες θα ενσωματωθούν σε αυτές. Ευτυχώς, κατά πάσα πιθανότητα θα υπάρχουν ξεχωριστά στα extras.

Πραγματικός "πόλεμος" έχει ξεσπάσει μετά την προχτεσινή ανακοίνωση, με τους φανατικούς οπαδούς της αρχικής τριλογίας να...χαλάνε τον κόσμο λέγοντας "ot (original trilogy) or nothing"

 

στο originaltrilogy.com οι υπογραφές για το "αίτημα" να βγει η ΑΡΧΙΚΗ τριλογία σε dvd έχουν ξεπεράσει τις 50,000, ενώ στα φόρουμ του starwars.com "τρώγονται" μεταξύ τους!

Come Sept. 21, the original "Star Wars" trilogy will arrive on DVD after years of pining from fans who loved the episodic space adventure, whose first installment appeared in 1977.

 

The films - "Episode IV: A New Hope," "Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" and "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi" - are some of the highest-grossing and best-loved movies in history, but creator George Lucas has kept them off the DVD shelves until now.

 

The four-disc set will include added scenes and a new feature-length documentary on the making of the movies. Even without a price announced, retailers and fans expect the package to be among the best-selling DVDs in the entertainment medium's brief history.

 

"It's just going to be huge," said Brian Lucas, spokesman for Minneapolis-based Best Buy. "These movies hold a special place in the hearts of movie lovers, and their appearance on DVD should be a runaway hit."

 

"I'm pretty excited about the release," said Rob Barlow, a 27-year-old "Star Wars" fan from Manchester. "There's just something magic about these movies. I've been collecting 'Star Wars' toys and stuff ever since I was a little kid. It will always be a part of my life."

 

Like the Indiana Jones trilogy, which was released in November, the original "Star Wars" films were among the few remaining mega-blockbusters of the late 1970s and early '80s that hadn't made it to DVD.

 

The first two films in Lucas' set of prequels to the trilogy, "Episode I: The Phantom Menace" and "Episode II: Attack of the Clones," are already on DVD. The as-yet-unsubtitled "Episode III" is due in theaters in May next year.

 

For a generation of movie lovers, the original trilogy was a seminal cinema experience.

 

Still, some fans are annoyed that Lucas is releasing the "Special Edition" versions of the films. In 1997, Lucas re-released the movies, adding more scenes and cleaning up special effects with new technology. Some of the added scenes, including a bar-room gunfight between Han Solo and a bounty hunter named Greedo, were scorned by fans who felt they altered the true origins of characters.

 

"To be honest, I'd much rather see them put both versions of the film out there and let the fans decide which ones to buy," said Dan McNamara, 26, of St. Louis.

 

Just how much fuel is left in the "Star Wars" franchise will be tested by the DVD release. The films and countless merchandising tie-ins have been a juggernaut in American popular culture for more than a quarter-century. The original "Star Wars" films grossed more than $1 billion at the box office and added another $1 billion in merchandising. Yet some say the series has lost its sheen in recent years.

 

Critics, and even some diehard fans, claimed that the "Star Wars" prequels didn't live up to the original trilogy. Those who study film also argue that "The Matrix" films were technologically superior and that the current generation of epic-movie fans is more entranced with "The Lord of the Rings."

 

"'Star Wars' has been on this kind of cultural time-release program for 25 years," said Robert Thompson, professor of media and popular culture at Syracuse University in New York. "Just when you think you can stop thinking about 'Star Wars,' something new - or something reissued - comes along. But, in the end, they've had two films that weren't very good in a row, and I'd bet a younger generation is more interested in the 'Rings' trilogy than 'Star Wars.'"

 

As pieces of cinematic art, none of the "Star Wars" films ranks particularly high, said Jeff Smith, director of the program for film and media studies at Washington University in St. Louis. However, the rabid dedication of the franchise's fans is a consumer force that will likely set sales to light-speed.
