"UN - I do not want to be poor anymore."
-- a collection of faith-inspired voices of people living in poverty.
A Call for Faith-based Action on the World We Want 2015 Platform
The World We Want platform is a joint project between civil society and the United Nations to provide an engaging and amplified, open platform where all people can contribute to a global conversation on the post-2015 development agenda. This conversation is creating a citizen-sourced body of work against which the current and future actions of world leaders can be measured. Expanding upon the MY World Global Survey, the World We Want provides space for partner organizations to host consultations with their constituencies on development aspirations and objectives. All constituent-generated inputs are then searchable and organized through a robust word-tagging system.
The New York offices to the United Nations of Caritas Internationalis, The Lutheran World Federation and other organizational partners will launch a new consultation on the platform entitled "UN - I do not want to be poor anymore: a collection of faith-inspired voices of people living in poverty" on Nelson Mandela International Day, 18 July.
The goal of this effort is to build political will with UN Member States to create a strong post-2015 development agenda that can end extreme poverty in our time while enabling sustainable development. Building political will and communicating it in the right forum at the right time entails three critical steps:
1. Organize Recognized Spaces for Voices of People Living in Poverty
Create a user profile (either personal or organizational) on the World We Want platform and join our consultation space. The initial consultation space will be provided in English only but we plan on launching additional languages in the coming weeks.
2. Gather Voices
The effort seeks to build political will through qualitative, moving inputs from people living in poverty and the grassroots faith-based organizations that directly accompany them, especially local faith communities. Users will be asked to provide up to 2500 character answers to the following straightforward questions designed to help individuals tell their stories about what it means to live in poverty and why it must be eradicated:
o Are you familiar with the Millennium Development Goals? (Yes or no toggle)
o Which development policies have most affected your life and the lives of people in your community over the last ten years?
o What do you want leaders at the United Nations to know and do about poverty?
o
What gives you hope that we can end poverty in our world?
Alternatively, users can contribute links to videos, audio recordings or pictures that provide answers and help tell their story.
3. Amplify Voices in a Format Accessible to UN Member States
Synthesis of user inputs into an initial report will begin on 19 August. The report will be released at a faith-based rally in the Church Center for the United Nations on 27 September in order to marshal political will with UN Member States immediately following the 25 September Special Event on the MDGs. The rally will include guest speakers, primarily people living in poverty from around the world and the grassroots activists who accompany them. A notable music artist will also perform a new song at the rally based on answers given throughout the effort. Representatives from the faith-based communities, UN Member States and UN development offices will be invited to attend. As organizers of this space we are committed to ongoing advocacy events that continue bringing these voices to the attention of UN decision makers as we move towards 2015.
On behalf of faith-based organizations within the Policy Strategy Group, we appreciate your commitment to contributing to the World We Want platform, the joint project between civil society and the UN to redefine citizen engagement in development processes and enable the meaningful participation of all voices to speak truth to power. As faith-based organizations, we need to lift up the voices of those who most need a strong set of new development goals - people living in poverty and the grassroots organizations who directly accompany them, especially local faith communities. This work is why we are here. If we, as faith-based organizations, do not confront "the scandal of poverty" then we are part of the problem. Please mobilize your grassroots networks to contribute to this important effort and thereby create the political will for a robust post-2015 development agenda that can end extreme poverty in our time while enabling sustainable development.
Sincerely,
Joseph Cornelius Donnelly,
Head, International Delegation to UN-NY Caritas Internationalis
Dennis Frado,
Main Representative at UN Headquarters The Lutheran World Federation
