Spicy Horse's Oz game is OZombie: 'If I only had some brainsss'

Spicy Horse's Oz game combines the undead with "an Oz not of our remembering" – it's called OZombie, and it stars Dorothy, Toto, the Lion and the Tin Woodsman. The Scarecrow, who always wanted brains, is cast as the villain in this iteration, and instead of carrying around a basket, Dorothy gets a repeater.

Spicy Horse is unsure which game it will make next, OZombie or Alice: Otherlands, and it all depends on whether the studio can regain the Alice rights from EA. If Spicy Horse and EA work out a good deal, then Alice it is. If not, OZombie gets the green light and probably a Kickstarter.

"Actually, the more I think about it – and the more I see/hear feedback from you guys – the more I'm personally leaning towards Oz," Spicy Horse founder American McGee writes on the OZombie Facebook page. "There's so much fun stuff to explore, so many interesting characters and locations to discover. Wonderland will also be there, if not today, if not the next project, then perhaps the one after that?"

American McGee Launches Kickstarter Campaign For OZombie

American McGee and Spicy Horse Games, the creative force behind Akaneiro: Demon Hunters as well as American McGee’s Grimm and Crazy Fairies announced today that the Kickstarter for their latest project, OZombie, is now live. OZombie is a narrative-driven action-adventure game in an alternate version of L. Frank Baum’s famous Oz universe.

While the themes and characters draw from all 14 of the Oz books, they are getting the stylistic and artistic touches Spicy Horse has used with titles like Alice: Madness Returns and Akaneiro: Demon Hunters.

OZombie is built around a single-player game with multiplayer available after completing the single-player mode. Multiplayer provides access to a range of player characters and competitive features like raids and tournaments.

OZombie will feature:

-Feature a variety of perspectives and game modes with an emphasis on role-playing, tactical combat, exploration and story telling.

-Be developed using Unity 3D technology

-Be delivered to most platforms Unity3D can target, but initially launch on Linux, Mac, PC (Windows) and latest-gen tablets.

-Be localized for play world-wide (EFIGS and more).

-Support offline single-player mode, though you’ll need to complete a one-time online registration when you first start.

-Contain NO form of DRM.

American McGee aims to raise $950K in the next 41 days, and those interested can back this project up by visiting its Kickstarter page.

OZombie will need additional funding beyond Kickstarter

StrategyInformer asked Spicy Horse boss American McGee if the $950,000 the Kickstarter is asking for is enough to fund such an ambitious-sounding title and was told that it isn’t.

“That amount is less than what we’ll need to develop the full game, but enough to get us started and deliver some initial chapters,” the developer said.

“We’ll need to throw some of our own funding at it, work to secure outside funding (perhaps via publishing deals) and find other creative ways to bridge the gap.”

Oz Action Adventure (Canceled)

The Oz campaign has to end. There are two realities driving the decision.

First, we’re facing a challenge with the Alice film rights. Since working to remove it from the Oz campaign we've been unable to launch it as a separate campaign here on Kickstarter – the submission has been rejected multiple times and our appeals have failed (multiple campaigns are not allowed). To launch a campaign for the Alice films rights means we must first shut down the Oz campaign.

Second, we wouldn't consider shutting down the Oz campaign if it were trending towards success. As it is, we've reached 15% of our goal with 20 days left in the campaign. Projections suggest we’ll hit 30% of our goal by campaign end. I've been telling myself to remain optimistic and see this thing through – but when the reality of our funding trend is combined with the pressure of the Alice film rights situation...
