EA-Sanctioned Wing Commander Saga Project Release Date

The fan-made Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn project that's been 10 years in the making now has a release date: 22nd March 2012.

 

This has the blessing of IP holder EA, original creator Chris Roberts and developer/publisher Origin. That's what project co-creator Tolwyn told Gnome's Lair.

 

What's more, Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn will be free, according to the game's FAQ. Presumably the client will be available from the Wing Commander Saga website.

 

Wing Commander Saga, built on the Freespace 2 engine, begins before Wing Commander 3 and ends at the climax of the Terran-Kilrathi War.

 

This entirely new story of 55 missions and some 11,000 lines of dialogue and 70 cinematics has been brought to life by more than 60 voice actors. There's nine hours of audio chatter.

 

There are large-scale fleet battles, achievements and graphics to match the times we live in. What, an economic recession? No, the technology that's available today.

 

The minimum system requirements are low: Windows XP, 1Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM and 128MB DirectX 9 graphics card. The game download should measure around 3-4GB, and install to 8-9GB.

 

Wing Commander was originally a MS-DOS game for PC, released 22 years ago in 1990 - the same year the Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan to win the WWF Championship.

Wing Commander Saga Is Now Available and is FREE for everyone

 

PC gamers, rejoice. As promised, the freeware Wing Commander Saga game is now available. The team has only released the PC version for now, with the Linux and Mac versions coming out pretty soon. The aforementioned version are delayed because they need to port the launcher to OSX and Linux and run some additional tests. Therefore, be a little bit patient you Linux and Mac users.

 

Wing Commander Saga is powered by the Freespace 2?s engine. Freespace 2 engine’s source code has been released to the public sector a couple of years ago, and Wing Commander Saga uses a modified and enhanced version of it.

 

The game will be friendly to mods and gamers will be able to create their own missions and campaigns.

 

Wing Commander Saga promises to feature a whole heap of new things and a dynamic, believable story and much more. Both the prologue and the upcoming main-release will be 100% standalone, which means that there is no CD or previous installed Freespace-version required. Oh, and it will have developed wingman characters.

Πήγα να το βάλω, αλλά το ESET "πέταξε" ένα .exe του ενώ έκανε install γιατί το βρήκε trojan.

 

Είναι γνωστό θέμα. Στο forum οι devs λένε ότι πρόκειται για εσφαλμένη διάγνωση από το ESET (false positive):

Ελπίζω να είναι πράγματι false positive, γιατί "φύλαγε την Κύπρο σου, να έχεις την μισή".

Το κατέβασα το saga, εντάξει δεν είναι το WOW παιχνίδι, αλλά είναι ένα βήμα στην επαναφορά των space shooters στη mainstream σκηνή, αρχής γεννημένης με την αποστολή του Halo reach, αυτό δημιούργησε την ανάγκη για full space shooters, και ποιο καλύτερο από ένα franchise που έχει ήδη και γαμάτο lore και έχει κοινό.
