* DivX 6 will not follow the H.264 standard. According to the CEO of DivXNetworks, Jordan Greenhall, implementing the H.264 standard in hardware is too costly and the improvement in quality is marginal; instead they will use their own propietry 'standard'. However, if the H.264 'costly hardware implementation' problem is overcome, DivX6 may implement the H.264 standard.

 

* DivXNetworks may use an 'open source' approach to the development of DivX 6, taking ideas from enthusiasts, codec developers and hardware developers. This approach failed with OpenDivX, but DivXNetworks blame this on the project not generating any useful contributions to DivX 4. With DivX 6, they hope there will be more interest and so a reason for having the standard 'open' much like Vorbis Ogg, where they control the standard, but anyone can implement it or make suggestions for improvements, etc. However, how useful this approach will be is questionable, given their history with OpenDivX.

DivXNetworks Ceo Jordan Greenhall spoke today on a press conference, which held its enterprise together with S.A.D., about the future of DivX. Actual cause was consisting the conception of the "DivX pro video luggage", of DivX 5,0,3 pro EN/DECODER, MovieJack 2 for DivX, MP3-Encoder and DivX Player, spoke. This had been originally announced as "DivX pro Cinema studio".

 

DivX 6,0 is not to be expected 2004 ago, although the developers obtained a twice as efficient coding allegedly already now with prop. guessing eras algorithms such as DivX 5,0,3 pro, means Greenhall. Fear of the MPEG-4-Nachfolger H.264 in the starting holes does not have DivX therefore. Fact is that open standards would bring out much too slowly "material World" suited applications, like DivX one is and referred thereby to the Lizenzquerelen around Mpeg-4 in the past year.

 

The strategy for the coming version is meanwhile not yet clear. First one had played according to Greenhall with the thought to develop the next version of reason on new which does not use any existing patents; the attempt was however fast rejected, because this was an almost impossible venture. Instead one, similarly as already with OpenDivX, wants to initiate an open SOURCE project that by the "DivX labs" still which can be created is to be coordinated. Enthusiasts and codec developers, in addition, hardware developers are to contribute their ideas there. To what extent this project really uses, is however questionable. To the question, why DivX gave the OpenDivX project up during the development of DivX 4.x, Greenhall answers that it gave as well as no useful contributions. Those, which would have contributed good ideas, work in the meantime for DivXNetworks.

 

An important goal of the last year efforts was it to convince manufacturers of DSPs (digital signal processors) for entertainment electronics to integrate DivX support into their developments. In the meantime one locked license agreement with the ten wichtigstens DSP manufacturers (for example Philips, Texas Instruments, Sigma Design).
