Πρώτες εντυπώσεις από τα νέα Fusion CPUS της AMD για Netbooks

IFA 2010: ONTARIO, NEXT AMD NETBOOK PLATFORM - FIRST IMPRESSIONS

 

We were one of the first (very first maybe) to go behind the scene at AMD booth at IFA Berlin and to take a sneak peak of Ontario APU platform while working. Unfortunately, we can’t share any pictures, but we can assure you that Ontario test platform is alive and kicking. Aside successfully working with Windows 7 OS, it did manage to accomplish several other things, but more on that later on. As it was stated on test motherboard, the silicon used was A0, with integrated UVD (most probably version 3.0). During the test, very small and basic cooling solution was used, but it still managed to keep APU cooled at around normal body temperature even under heaviest loads.

 

Ontario is next generation AMD platform aimed to take place in HD netbooks and ultra thin laptops, so we naturally wanted to check how good HD video playback is. Well known and slightly irritating Big Buck Bunny video was used, 1080p resolution, and both playback and fast forwarding were very, very smooth. Next we tried Microsoft‘s N-Body Particle systems test, which showed dramatic performance difference when using GPU instead CPU for calculation, as well as full DirectX 11 compatibility. Among other things we tried, Office 2010 worked very fluidly, and we even witnessed 3Dmark06 in action. As this not being final product, with driver and possibly architecture improvements still to come, we can’t give you any numbers there, but the fact it was working and didn’t take forever to finish things, is good enough for us. There was AVP benchmark shortcut, but we couldn’t run it at the moment, hopefully we will have more luck tomorrow.

 

There are some manufacturers of netbooks/laptops, which already started testing Ontario for their products, and we wouldn’t be too surprised to see final products very early next year, especially from HP and Acer. Question is what kind of products they will show? With such a low TDP and long battery life (there will be two versions of the same silicon, just with different frequency), and with so good graphic performance, we wouldn’t be so surprised to finally see some Windows 7 slates out there, long time ago after Ballmer promise at this year’s CES.

Αντε επιτελους, δεν την παλευω αλλο με το Atom N270/ GMA950 και το Atom Z530/ GΜΑ500!

 

Aπο CPU perf πώς πανε αυτα; Γιατι μονο για τα integrated graphics λεει...!

Σύμφωνα με unofficial benchmarks, ένας Bobcat πυρήνας στα 1.6ghz είναι 2x Integer και 3x Floating Point σε σχέση με έναν Atom πυρήνα στα 1.6ghz.

 

Αν προσθέσουμε την υποστήριξη 64bit,H/W Virtualization και την ενσωματωμένη Radeon HD 5000 GPU με πλήρη υποστήριξη DX11, καταλαβαίνεις ότι σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα ο Atom θα παύσει να υπάρχει στην ζωή τουλάχιστον από τα netbooks, ζωή σε λόγου μας σε κανέναν δεν θα λήψει. Του χρόνου που θα ωριμάσουν τα 28nm bulk της TSMC, θα δεις και quadcore Ontarios με 160SP GPUS σε netbooks και ultrathins.

 

Είναι εκπληκτικό στο πόσο μικρός είναι ο Bobcat στα 40nm της TSMC σε σχέση με τον πυρήνα του Atom στα 45nm της Intel και πόσο πολύ ποιο προχωρημένος είναι, μιλάμε για μια πραγματικά ανώτερη και μοντέρνα x86 CPU+GPU στην κατηγορία αυτή, το γεγονός ότι είναι πλήρης Out Of Order η σχεδίαση στον Bobcat προϊδεάζει για αρκετά και καλά χρόνια στην κυκλοφορία και στο εμπόριο.

Δεν γνωρίζω εάν το ξέρεις ήδη, άλλα ο Bobcat σαν x86 πυρήνας, παρουσιάστηκε στην Hotchips 2010 στις 24 Αυγούστου μαζί με τους AMD Bulldozer και IBM System z Micro-Processor σαν νέες αρχιτεκτονικές στους επεξεργαστές. Ορίστε και το πρόγραμμα. Όποιος λέει ότι βασίζεται σε Κ8, μάλλον το φαντάζεται.

Ενδιαφεροντα, ακρως ενδιαφεροντα ολα! Αντε γιατι πανε και χρονια με τους in-order Atom στην αγορα και η απαλεψια μας εχει καβαλησει απο πανω

Zacate's TDP is competitive but at 18W it's in curious company. Intel's ultra-low voltage Core i3 has an 18W TDP, but the CPU should be much faster than a pair of Bobcats. The GPU side is a question here as well, but I'm guessing AMD should at least be competitive with Arrandale graphics.

 

O Anand σαν καλός πωλητής της Intel, τολμάει και συγκρίνει τα CULV chips και τα GMA Graphics της Intel με τον Ontario και την ATI GPU του, ξεχνάει όμως να αναφέρει πόσο χρεώνει τους CULV η Intel, το κόστος κατασκευής τους και την παντελώς άθλια υποστήριξή στα γραφικά τους...Ο άνθρωπος είναι τεράστιος.

The test system is the Zacate APU. This includes two Bobcat-cores, a graphics unit as well as traditional a storage controller and more I/o modules to communicate with the rest of the system. The TDP Zacate-APU put AMD to 18 watts, used aluminium radiator (4 x 4 x 2 plus fan) was not even lukewarm however, even after several minutes exposure to 3D applications and FullHD playback. We estimate the temperature at 25-30 ° C.

 

Among other things we could admire GPU acceleration of Internet Explorer 9 which ran in the Standardsettings Flying Images Tests with 60 FPS. A FullHD movie could easily decode the APU and judder-free play. The game "City of Heroes" ran while also liquid but in a strongly reduced settings which were probably quite close to the minimum. However, it must be remembered that it is Zacate only a small APU, which will compete with an Intel Atom and AMD will succeed in this. Because felt ran the all tasks much more fluid than any known NetBook Intel Atom-based system. Also a companies close source told us to example StarCraft II on medium settings to be playable. Καλα o Anand εχει αρχισει εδω και καιρο να γινεται γραφικος ακομη και στους μονιμους αναγνωστες των αρθρων του και στα μελη του site του.

Τώρα στο θέμα μας, και γω σκέφτομαι να τσιμπήσω ένα για netbook, καθώς θα είναι πολύ πιο γρήγορα και απο τα διπυρηνα atom , αλλά το μόνο μειονέκτημα που βρήκα είναι ότι η έκδοση για netbook δεν θα υποστηρίζει native usb 3.0 σε αντίθεση με το llano της desktop εκδοσης. Βέβαια θεωρώ ότι όλο και κάποιοι κατασκευαστές θα προσθέσουν usb 3.0 ports όπως ήδη έχει αρχίσει να γίνεται.

Εχει βγεί η είδηση οτι το Desktop Socket του Llano (FM1) έρχετε κοντά στα 2000 pins...Πράγμα που σημαίνει οτι ένα απο τα 2 Sockets στις πλατφόρμες της AMD του 2011,AM3+ και Fusion/Llano FM1, δεν θα ζήσει για πολύ...η Intel παρουσιάζει Universal Socket το 2012 με τον Haswell, το Fusion chip της Intel και το ίδιο θα πράξει και η AMD...

Είναι πραγματικά απίστευτο αυτό που κατάφερε η AMD. Επιδόσεις Core 2 Duo στις μισές διαστάσεις ενός Atom πυρήνα και με πολύ φθηνό κόστος κατασκευής, είναι νικητής.
