Mass Effect 2: The Adept

New details and your first look at the revamped biotic user.

Electonic Arts and BioWare have shown quite a lot of Mass Effect 2 recently, but there has been one major thing we haven't had a look at: the biotic users. The Adept class, focused primarily on the biotic, non-weapon combat has been mysteriously missing from the videos and previews we've had thus far. Today, that changes. Here you'll get your first look at the Adept class in action, as well as some new details courtesy of a brief question and answer session with the lead combat designer, Christina Norman...

See how the Adept has changed in this new trailer.

Bioware’s learned from past mistakes, DLC for ME2 will “kick ass”

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has told Joystiq that the Mass Effect 2 team’s learned from past DLC mistakes and that extra content for the game will be “pretty kick-ass”.

“The DLC challenge is interesting, because you’re not only balancing what you can support in engine technology, but you always have to consider the fan expectations,” he said. “I think if people are fair, and look at things for what they are, (both the Mass Effect DLC packs) are actually unique experiences.

“We’ve got a lot of learning from the Mass Effect DLC and just in general we’ve done it for core too. The biggest learning we’ve got is that you have to actually make DLC a fundamental part of your plan. In the sense of actually part of the development process before the game is released.

“And what I mean by that is the actual act of putting it out and releasing it; I mean, make sure there are no quibbles or problems with how it connects to everything else, it’s something you need to do right from the beginning. And I think that’s going to be our strategy on Dragon Age: Origins, that’s going to be our strategy on Mass Effect 2: Making that a fundamental part of the experience.

“We’ve learned a lot, and we’ll have pretty kick-ass DLC on both Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. In large part, again, we can already play it, and some of it we go, ‘Wow, this is actually really cool stuff.’

Mass Effect 2 to ship on two discs

BioWare’s confirmed that Mass Effect 2 will arrive on two discs, with the 360 version featuring a disc swap during play.

“Even though there is a disc swap, it occurs at a carefully planned place in the game (that does not interfere with gameplay) and is done once,” Chris Priestly, community coordinator of BioWare, said on the game’s forum.

“You do not swap back and forth. One swap and then done.”

The PC version’s a two-disc install.

Mass Effect 2 will have regular loading screens instead of elevator loads

Mass Effect 2’s associate programmer, Thomas Roy, has said on the official forums (login required) that the game’s ditched the elevator loading from the first game for typical load screens.

But, instead of boring old hat, the load times will offer “interesting visuals and information” instead of the long, boring screens with a progress bar.

Speaking of elevators, last week, BioWare’s Casey Hudson explained the “new” elevator scenes a bit more, via an interview with VideoGamer.

The whole ship is so rich and full of things to do,” he said. “Even better, what used to be slow elevators or slow transitions from one deck to another now is faster transition and it actually is part of the narrative.

You go to the elevator control and then you see what’s on the elevator control panel as the schematics of the Normandy reveal where you are in the ship, and they show you different decks as you transition. Then all of a sudden you’re there.

So it makes it an interesting part of the narrative. I find that now, in between missions out in the universe, I come back to the Normandy and I just want to run around and do all the new things and check out the stuff I bought, talk to everybody, because it’s a lot smoother and there’s just so much more to do. I think people will be really excited about that.”
