kostacurtas Δημοσ. 13 Νοεμβρίου 2008 Δημοσ. 13 Νοεμβρίου 2008 Supreme Commander 2 - Announced Square Enix has signed a strategic partnership with Gas Powered Games and announces development has begun on Supreme Commander 2, the next installment in the real-time strategy series. This strategic partnership represents one of the first steps Square Enix Co., Ltd., a sister company of Square Enix headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and its affiliates (collectively, Square Enix Group) are taking towards their goal of increasing western development efforts aimed for the global markets. Square Enix Group has previously worked exclusively with Japanese development companies, so the decision to form strategic partnerships with developers located outside of Japan serves as a new cornerstone of its strategy to create games targeted primarily at consumers in Europe and North America. Additionally, Square Enix Group's foray into the real-time strategy genre is a significant expansion of its product lineup, largely known for its leadership role in the genre of role-playing games. "We see great opportunities in European and North American markets, both of which are expected to be maintaining sustainable growth over these coming years," said Yoichi Wada, president and representative director of Square Enix Co., Ltd. "Therefore, it is crucial we create alliances with proven developers such as Gas Powered Games in order to serve these significant markets better by providing products and services in tune with customer tastes." "Gas Powered Games is an accomplished development house that has demonstrated its ability to successfully create and develop intellectual properties," said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. and Square Enix, Inc.. "We are extremely excited to begin working with Gas Powered Games' talented personnel and see this strategic partnership as a significant step in our efforts to bring Square Enix titles to a broader global audience." Gas Powered Games, known for Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander, was founded in 1998 by one of the game industry's most imaginative and dynamic visionaries Chris Taylor, who serves as chief executive officer. "It is truly a great honour to join forces with as renowned a developer and publisher as Square Enix, Inc." said Taylor: "Everyone at Gas Powered Games is thrilled about this collaboration, and the results will surely delight video game fans around the world." Details on Supreme Commander 2 including gameplay features, platform(s) and release date will be available at a later time.
kostacurtas Δημοσ. 14 Νοεμβρίου 2008 Μέλος Δημοσ. 14 Νοεμβρίου 2008 What We Want in Supreme Commander 2 Gas Powered reveals a sequel to its awesome RTS game, and we've got some suggestions. Strategy fans, rejoice. Gas Powered Games yesterday announced Supreme Commander 2, the sequel to last year's epic-sized real-time strategy game that was itself a spiritual successor to the classic Total Annihilation. An interesting aspect of the announcement is the fact that the game will be published by Japanese publisher Square Enix, best known for its Final Fantasy role-playing games. The original Supreme Commander was published by THQ. The press release of the announcement is full of the standard executive quotes about how happy everyone is to work together. The release notes that Square Enix is looking to diversify its lineup by delivering strategy games to North American and European markets. Unfortunately, details about the game itself were nowhere to be found in the release. There's not even a release date or window, as this was mainly just to announce the publishing deal between the two companies. So we're stuck for now with just guessing what will be Supreme Commander 2. As a big Supreme Commander fan, there are definitely some things that we'd love to see in the sequel...

"If I start the game and in the first 60 seconds I build a tank, I want that tank to be able to deliver the killing blow to my opponent 35 minutes to 90 minutes later." That's Chris Taylor's goal for Supreme Commander 2. It's completely counter to the philosophy of both the beloved Total Annihilation and the mighty Supreme Commander. Both strategy games revolved around a stark stratification of combat power: Tech 1 bots were tiny gnats next to the state of the art killing machines you'd be churning out half an hour into a match. But Chris and his team are fresh from their success with Demigod, the small-scale strategy/RPG hybrid where hero units level up and buy equipment on the battlefield. It's a safe bet we'll see Supreme Commander's Veterancy system expanded, in which units become tougher as they score more kills, but that's not all...

If you played Supreme Commander, the excellent PC strategy game, you know that Chris Taylor and Gas Powered games can make great RTSs. You also know just how ambitious and massive they can be. Supreme Commander was a complex and satisfying game, and it looks like its sequel is going to be just as massive, but will address a number of problems with the original. Better art design, a better economy, and improved pathfinding are just some of the improvements we can look forward to. We got to sit down with Gas Powered Games' Chris Taylor for a demo at E3 2009, and he filled us in on the details. Want to know more? Read on...

Giant explosions and the culmination of a set of decisions made to best manage a complex tug-of-war resource system is part of what made Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander so great. Besides Global Illumination the visual appearance is enhanced with Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, Soft Shadows and Unit Self Shadows. The pure mass of particles as well as huge blast waves that interact with any object make the massive battles visually appealing. Dual monitoring is still natively supported and a Freeze'n'Free Cam Mode can be used to take impressive screenshots. According to Chris Tailor the new multi core optimized engine is running much faster than the old one. During the presentation Supreme Commander 2 was running was running smoothly almost all the time at 720p, regardless of the units of four parties and screen filling explosions. According to the latest information Supreme Commander 2 will be released in 2010.

kostacurtas Δημοσ. 7 Ιανουαρίου 2010 Μέλος Δημοσ. 7 Ιανουαρίου 2010 Supreme Commander 2 Preview The titanic RTS is back, supremier and commandier than ever. Chris Taylor is a man who loves everything. Absolutely everything. That's what IGN discovered when we interviewed the designer behind some of the most celebrated RTS games in PC gaming, in a discussion ostensibly about Supreme Commander 2, but taking in casual website design coding, Pixar films, book recommendations and really, anything on Taylor's mind at the time. Which is a boon to us 'write-about-human-side-of-developers-in-opening-paragraph' types. Normally such digression would pose a problem to a time-restricted gameplay demonstration, but happily it all comes back to SupCom 2; especially the human side of things, as it turns out. After last year's announcement of a partnership with famed Japanese firm Square Enix, a lot of fans felt some trepidation: what did this collaboration between two companies who make very different games spell for the next iteration of their beloved title? Happily, what we saw of SupCom 2 has dispelled any doubts. Taylor was happy to admit that SupCom 1, while grand in gameplay terms, was lackluster when it came to story, which Square Enix has been happy to flesh out for this sequel. The single player campaign has therefore been expanded with this improvement in mind, and an involved story that features fractured relationships between a core cast of characters will be told, chiefly through brief in-engine cutscenes at the beginning of missions and, refreshingly, during the gameplay itself, with plot and character development coming over the radios as the plot-specific units chat to each other...
