Code for greek subtitles.

First of all, sorry for posting in english but my greek becomes more and more awfull

 

i write you this little message because i've got a problem with a dvd-reader home cinema samsung HT-X30.

 

as my manual says, i've got to put the code 1142 in the subtitles setting in order to see the subtitles of my Divx in greek. But unfortunately, the subtitles are unreadable (cabalistic characters lol) and i don't know what is going on

 

Do you have any idea if i've got to use an another code from an another country in order to set it right ??

By taking a look at the manual, I gather that this setting most probably affects only the playback of DVDs. Id est, it forces the player to automatically switch to a Greek audio and subtitle bitmap stream (where available) while playing a DVD-Video disc. Kind of like the following settings in Media Player Classic:

 

 

...which affect only DVD playback. Matters with subtitles in text formats (.srt, .sub etc. accompanying AVI/MPEG/whatever video files) are entirely different. Your DVD player must include a Greek bitmap font in its firmware, in order to be able to render Greek subtitles. Are you absolutely sure that this your specific Samsung model includes such support? If not, you should check the Samsung web site for availability of a recent firmware image for your player, offering said support. If no such firmware is available, your only hope lies with the DVD player firmware modding community, provided that your player uses a popular and tweakable chipset.

 

Furthermore, players expect a text subtitle file saved with a specific encoding. Ideally, this would be UTF-8 so all the languages of this world could be supported. Most often, you have to use either ISO-8859-7 or WINDOWS-1253 encoding in order to get proper Greek subtitle rendering.
