Godfather II: First details

Three cities, RTS elements for mobster follow-up.

The first details of EA's Godfather II have emerged, in the latest issue of Xbox World 360 magazine which hits newsstands today.

Described as "Scarface meets Total War", the second game is said to be less of a GTA-clone and more of a sandbox game with RPG, RTS and erm, board game elements.

The action takes place across three 1960s-era cities (Miami, Havana and good old New York), and the once again focuses more on bullying depot bosses than driving boats and helicopters (of which there are none).

From the screenshots the on-foot stuff looks familiar, only the characters and classes have been expanded significantly.

Six are lined up for the final game; bruiser, demolitions expert, arsonist, medic, safe cracker and engineer. Each and every character is said to have their own background and one of twelve different 'personalities'. So a bruiser for example might have an alcohol problem, and swig bottles during brawls in bars.

At any time in the game you can jump into 'Don's View', from where you can distribute your resources, check out the competition and plan your various illegal deeds. From there you can zoom down to the normal on-foot position and get your hands dirty with the new, totally free-aim shooting mechanics.

The 'board game' stuff comes in the form of perks. Raid and wrestle an oil refinery from a rival family for example, and you'll be rewarded with bullet proof vests or an armoured car for your family. Other business will give you a percentage stake in their earnings, so more cash for your street war effort.

'Sting cards' are also handed out for completing sabotage missions, such as smashing up a dinner and planting incriminating evidence, which will in turn get a rival family member chucked in jail for a certain amount of time.

As you can imagine the opportunity for an online mode and rival player families is massive, but EA isn't saying anything about multiplayer yet.

Godfather II is planned for release in 2009.

The Godfather II Dated

Electronic Arts and Paramount Digital Entertainment today revealed the first details of The Godfather II videogame, the sequel to the 2007 multi-platinum hit. Inspired by the film and Mario Puzoʼs Corleone family drama, The Godfather II game goes beyond the filmʼs story by setting players in the world of organized crime in 1960ʼs Florida, Cuba and New York.

After being promoted by Michael Corleone to Don of New York, players expand to new cities, as they build up their families through extorting businesses, monopolizing illegal crime rings and defeating new families in an effort to become the most powerful mob family in America. To help players manage their empire, The Godfather II introduces “The Donʼs View” – an innovative strategy meta-game that allows players to oversee the entire world as they grow the family business. Using the Donʼs View, players will be able to build, defend and expand their crime rings, while keeping an eye on the movements and plans of the rival families. Players will also learn to master the business of organized crime by building a family of Made Men, hiring crew, handing out orders, and promoting their best men up the ranks.

Set in a stunning open-world environment, The Godfather II expands on the popular gameplay mechanics of the first game and doubles down on the seriesʼ signature BlackHand control scheme, which now features even more visceral hand-to-hand brutality at your fingertips, introducing a new combo system, pressure tactics and executions. In The Godfather II, players will fight alongside their hand-picked crew, who have their own skills and expertise. Each family member specializes in a specific field such as demolitions, arson, engineering, first-aid and more. As The Don you control the family, sending some of your men on missions while heading off into action with others. The combination of strategic organized crime gameplay and brutal BlackHand action sets The Godfather II apart from other open-world games.

“In the 1960ʼs, a mafia Don was only as strong as his family,” said Hunter Smith, Executive Producer of The Godfather II. “We found the hierarchical culture of organized crime intriguing. Running an organized crime family in a world defined by family loyalty is something that we felt could introduce a new strategic element to the genre. That is what the Donʼs View is all about -- laying out a strategy to pick off the competition one by one. The Donʼs View is so unique, it could fundamentally change the rules of open-world games by blending action and strategy to create something entirely new.”

“The Godfather has become an exceptional gaming franchise for the Studio,” states Sandi Isaacs, Senior Vice President of Interactive & Mobile for Paramount Digital Entertainment. “The videogame takes the story and gameplay to the next level with an innovative open-world action strategy that is both compelling and intriguing for gamers.”

The Godfather II will premiere exclusively on GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley on Friday, August 15th on Spike TV. The entire episode will be dedicated to The Godfather II including behind-the-scenes with the development team, the debut of the game trailer and a first look at the game itself. The trailer will also be available on August 18th at: http://godfather2.ea.com.

Developed at the EA Redwood Stores studio, The Godfather II will be coming to the Xbox360, PLAYSTATION3 and PC in February 2009.

The Godfather II First Look

Prepare to return to La Cosa Nostra.

In most crime games, you're never given a chance to fully control the fate of your organization. Even though you work your way up from a low level soldier to a leader, your moves and the growth of your organization is somewhat rigidly tied to linear story features. The same can be said of the opposition to your maneuvers by rivals, who will only react to you and your activities only after you've committed something significant. As a result, you never get a sense of being a true crime lord who has to deal with the consequences of your actions nor do you feel like you have to watch your back because your enemies will attack you where they feel you're weakest. EA is hoping to change this lack of control with its upcoming release of The Godfather II, a game that lets you run the family business with a mix of action and strategy...

Godfather II to offer 15-25 hours gameplay

Speaking to VideoGamer.com during a first look reveal of the game, Hunter Smith, the game's executive producer at EA's Redwood Stores studio, said that most gamers don't have 80 to 100 hours to dedicate to anything, referencing Rockstar's approach with rival sandbox gangster game Grand Theft Auto IV.

He said: "First time we were down this path we felt like that was an objective of ours, to have 50 to 80 hours of gameplay. We ended up just making s$!t up so we could fill that model. Now I think our range for the player will be somewhere in the 15 to 25 hour experience."

Smith also denied that the reduced single-player game length made Godfather II a worse game, citing the multiplayer and the real-time strategy elements as evidence of replayability.

"We've got multiplayer we think is fun that feeds back and forth," he said. "We've also got a strategy game - you could replay this thing in really different ways. It's not a linear game by any stretch of the imagination. We felt like that was a much more fun thing to do for a player. I also feel like, when I look at most customers, most of them don't have 80 to 100 hours to dedicate to anything. I'd rather have more people enjoy the game."

You'll have to wait until February next year to play Godfather II, too. EA told us it has no plans for a demo.

The Godfather II Hands-on

Taking over the streets of New York, one racket at a time.

In August, I had a chance to check out The Godfather II, EA's upcoming title that promises to let you create your own crime empire with a mix of action and strategy. With the design philosophy of "Act like a mobster, think like a Don," EA wants to give players significant control over how they establish crime rings, extort businesses and eliminate rival families. While I got a basic sense of what the game would entail, I didn't have a chance to hop onto the controller and lead my crew into battle. Fortunately, I recently had a chance to run through the earliest tutorial section of an alpha build of the game to get a better sense of what players will experience in February...
