WoW is the target for The Old Republic, says LucasArts and EA

 

Both EA and LucasArts have confirmed to VG247 that the target for BioWareʼs newly announced Star Wars: The Old Republic is to make an MMO with a larger userbase than World or Warcraft.

 

We have very high expectations for this,” said EA Games president Frank Gibeau, speaking this week at LucasArtsʼ HQ in San Francisco.

 

Just look at the base of Star Wars fans, plus what BioWare can do. Trust me: we want to win. EAʼs reputation is for wanting to win.

 

This is going to be a powerful category and thereʼs lots of ways to compete in this category. [blizzard] created a much larger opportunity for everybody else, but that doesnʼt mean itʼs going to stay that way.”

 

LucasArts online boss Tom Nichols concurred, saying that the firm is banking on The Old Republicʼs storytelling component to bust through WoWʼs 11 million subs record.

 

When World of Warcraft came out, everybody thought, ʽNo, the market is only this big, because thatʼs as big as EverQuest was.ʼ Blizzard showed that it could be much larger,” he said.

 

Our goal is to show that by bringing storytelling to the genre that we can attract an even wider audience. Plus, we have the benefit of this huge brand, which has done very, very well for nearly 30 years.”

 

When asked specifically if he believed the game will be bigger than World of Warcraft, Nichols said all the ingredients were in place.

 

I think this game has that potential, with a premiere developer behind it; with a clear differentiating feature being story and something thatʼs very compelling, and being a feature thatʼs true to BioWareʼs expertise as well as the Star Wars brand; plus the power of the Star Wars brand, which is still doing very, very well 30 years after it started,” he said.

 

The opportunity is there for us to do that.”

 

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a PC-only MMO set in the KOTOR Star Wars timeline, and was shown for the first time in California earlier this week.

 

The game has no release date.

BioWare MMO has been in planning for over 10 years

 

Star Wars: The Old Republic is ambitious, but maybe we donʼt know just how much. Speaking in San Francisco last week, BioWare boss Ray Muzyka told VG247 that the Canadian firm had been planning an MMO for more than ten years.

 

Weʼve been thinking of making an MMO for probably over a decade,” he said. “At BioWare we tend to have long-term plans.”

 

Working to such long scales is necessary to keep the developerʼs output at an “awesome” level, said Ray.

 

We want to make sure that everything we do is awesome, really high quality,” he added.

 

So what we did was assemble a great team, a mix of some of the best people from the MMO space and some of the best people from BioWare Edmonton who focused on BioWare RPGs, and put them together: thatʼs our Austin team.”

 

Itʼs really a fusion of the best of breed from both sides of the industry.”

 

Ray told us that BioWare has now staffed up to a roster of almost 500 employees, and that The Old Republic is a major deal for the company.

 

This is an incredibly significant product for BioWare,” he said.

 

I said in the presentation, ʽPeople ask us why we didnʼt do KOTOR 3?ʼ For us this is KOTOR 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9: itʼs that big in terms of the amount of content. Itʼs that ambitious in terms of the scale, and the interactions of the players with the world and the universe.”

 

Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced last week in California. No dateʼs on the game as yet.

Old Republic Has ''Stunning'' Combat

 

Bioware has told IncGamers about the "stunning" combat system in its upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

 

Lead game designer James Ohlen said the development team has been working on "dynamic, visceral" combat in The Old Republic and, whilst it still needs some refining, so far the results have been "really impressive".

 

"[W]e want it to look very “Star Warsy”", said Ohlen.

 

"When you swing your lightsaber at an enemy, they’ll either block it, dodge it, or it’ll make contact and that contact will be very attention-getting."

 

"What we don’t want are instances where the only way you can tell what’s going on in combat is by looking at the numbers, the animations and effects", he added.

 

"When you see some gameplay videos, you’ll see that combat is not only exciting to take part in, it’s also stunning to simply watch."

Για να δούμε, για να χτυπήσουν το WoW ή καλύτερα να κάνουν ένα MMO που δε θα αποτύχει θα πρέπει να τα δώσουν όλα στο gameplay.

Τόσα χρόνια και τόσες αποτυχημένες προσπάθειες απο πολλές εταιρείες και franchises βλ. Age of conan, Vanguard, Warhammer online ((sorry μάγκες αλλά και αυτό ένα ακόμα failure ήταν) και ακόμα να καταλάβουν ότι: GAMEPLAY IS KING.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Powered by Simutronics HeroEngine

The unique collaborative design platform of the HeroEngine allows for development in real-time, enabling teams in different geographic locales to build the world and play the game live on the server simultaneously. Updates and changes to the game environment are instantaneous, negating the need for nightly builds and code crunching, which significantly reduces the notoriously long MMOG development cycle.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Takes On The Hutt Home World

 

BioWare has revealed the latest playable planet for their eagerly anticipated massively-multiplayer roleplaying game Star Wars: The Old Republic - Nal Hutta, home of the slug-like ancestors of Jabba the Hutt.

 

Of course the original Hutt home world was Varl, but when the slimy Hutts killed that planet with pollution they moved in on the planet of the primitive Evocii, effectively mortgaging the entire planet after spending centuries building up the inhabitants' debt. The planet's full name is Nal Hutta, which translates into "Glorious Jewel" in the Hutta language, though it's quite obvious from these screenshots and bits of concept art that the Hutt notion of glorious isn't exactly the same as yours and mine.

 

BioWare continues to impress me with their attention to detail in The Old Republic, giving Hutta exactly the sort of greasy, stinking look you'd expect from a planet dominated by glorified slugs.

Αχ... κατάφερα τόσο καιρό να αγνοήσω (πραγματικά όμως, ούτε που το έχω αγγίξει, στο σύμπαν μου δεν υπάρχει) το Wow, όση πίεση και αν δέχτηκα να του ρίξω έστω και μια ματιά. Δεν ξέρω αν θα τα καταφέρω και μ' αυτό.

 

Αυτό το παιχνίδι έχει όλα τα φόντα να με καταστρέψει.
