Hah, yeah I found that Google isn't of much help, but at least it has the function to translate the whole webpage. Thus I can see for what is which section. I don't want to write in English-written Greek forums bec. they're very deserted. The largest BG forum for example is forums.data.bg and there we speak literally about everything. That's what I want - to speak about any topic but with you. I want to speak about the Macedonian question, about NFS, about Windows Vista, about Lost, 24 or Heroes, about your EU membership, about your history, about everything.

 

Where does the name Greece derives from?

Do you watch Lost? What do you think about the season finale of 4th season?

Why do you use Vista or why are you against the latest Microsoft OS?

Have you come to Bulgaria(I agree with one of the previuos posts that outside Sofia it's everywhere misery)?

...If you REALLY are "decided" to participate in this forum, maybe you could make some compromise : How about using google translation the OTHER way too. From english to greek. Τhe term is Ελληνικά (=greek) and it IS provided.

The thing is, the translation DOES leave a lot to be desired, but you can either convert YOUR english to greek, like you can convert OUR greek to english so you can get us...

This way, it's almost guaranteed you MAY stay an active forum member...)

 

Anyway, since you asked (just like WE asked you to do so) , the name "Greece" has various alleged roots. A "fav" one of ours, is i guess, that it comes from the ancient greek verb "griko", meaning "i know". I however guess the actual origin of this, is "lost in history", since it was anyway implemented on greek people by other nations (some -foreigners - even make fun of it nowadays, of how it rhymes with "grease"). Other "interpretations" for it's origin are that it comes from some ancient greek tribe (while the general term by then, used to be "Hellenes" - Elines in...greek). There's even, and so i read, the claim that it comes from some slavic word, whose meaning i right now seem to be forgetful of . In conclusion, we generally prefer to be - even internationally - called by the term of "Helenes" and "Hellas" (instead of Greece), which is a direct connection to the ancient ones dwelling here ...

 

Now like flo1 said, you may use the searchbox feature of the forum, to locate certain threads about certain issues. Like discussions for Lost, NFS, Vista and so on.

And even for the "Macedonian" issue,,,which is kind of a controversial one here in the forum (...what did YOU exactly mean by it ? Cause it came as strange to see a Bulgarian "raising" such a topic...I mean, if you were from Skopje, it would come almost as natural...I really like to get your views on that)

Thanks for the answers. I'll try writing in Greek using Babelfish. But I think it's useful to you too to practice your English. That's one of my motives to write here - to practice mine. About the Macedonian question I want to hear every opinion on it - I've whole life learned the Bulgarian one, now I'm trying to get the Macedonian one, and I want to hear yours. As I said, last year I was in Greece to some relatives (yes, I have some not very close relatives in Greece) and when I mentioned it they started quarrelling and didn't want to talk about it.

About the Macedonian issue, it's been going on for years now, and the truth is, that for the last 15 years they are called as "Macedonians". The truth is, that it's not far from beeing true.

Yeah, sure, at around 325BC, at the time where Alexander the Great lived, he united many parts of nowadays Greece and furthermore northern territories, nowadays called either, Albania, part of Serbia, nowadays Bulgaria and many many more as you can see in the map below:

 

 

 

 

 

Being called "Macedonians" is half-true, maybe they are descendants of Macedonian people of that time, but they are for sure not descendants of Alexander The Great as they believe and claim.

He originated from Pella, a region near Thessaloniki.

 

Furthermore, as you can see in the map, the kingdom he created was huge and many territories that he conquered never spoke Greek and never claimed to be Greek.

So, why do the people say that they are "Macedonians"?

 

In 1998, I was in a summer school in England, in Brighton actually, and I hang out with some guys from "Macedonia". We had our fights to be honest (many times) and we made good friends.

They learned in school that 73% of Greece's territory, belongs actually to them, that Alexander the Great was not Greek, never spoke Greek and never wrote Greek.

 

They are being taught false things from school, and as a consequence they believe it.

N1ghtW0lf, even though i expected Dragger to initiate the "macedonian discussion", you did, so i just wanna state that people of FYROM, are called like that for centuries now, based on the fact that they dwell part of the "geographical" territory called Macedonia, and that's basically why they wouldn't change the way they'd like to be called. And anyway, just cause you met a bunch of ignorant students, doesn't mean that the whole nation is based on such. What should concern us, would be if such an OFFICIAL stance existed. And due to some teachers "preaching" for "Greater Macedonia", to primary school kids, doesn't mean that the same goes with the official academic curiculum (just think that some of OUR teachers used to directly - or indirectly, make us think that western Turkey should "belong" to us...but the official state never issued books claiming such).

 

Also considering the fact that many of those lived in nowadays greek teritory, as part of the Ottoman Empire population till the Balkan Wars, it's "logical" of them to feel that they were ejected from their "own" land...

In short, it goes far beyond from being a "simple" issue, the "macedonian" one, and "them" just being frauds, or ignorant...

Washcloud, i never claimed it to be a simple matter. If it were, I guess, it would have been solved years before.

 

But, the problem is, that the whole nation is based on such ideas, as i prescribed in my previous post.Their books, show their land covering Greek territory. (And believe me, not just a small part, but aaa looot, until Larisa, and almost the whole of the Makedonia part.

Their beliefs are mostly based on propaganda.

... i don't think so, based on a coverage from ΣΚΑΪ TV some months now, they do not issue books claiming that - some classroms just had some "Greater Macedonia" maps hanging on their walls....

Hi, again. I've returned from Brussels, I can show you some pics if you want.

 

The problem with the whole history of the Balkans is that every country is so closed in itself that it doesn't want to see the others' points of view. We' ve been teached on one thing, the Macedonians on other, and you - on third. Don't ask me about the Serbs' vision about Macedonia...

 

PS. Actually it's very difficult to translate from greek to english by the two major translator online programs.
