Dark Void

Dark Void delivers a ground breaking combination of fast paced vertical combat mixed with mid-air and on-foot action.

Something is consuming our universe, a vast and ancient force almost beyond our comprehension. Millions of years ago, the minions of that power found their way to the 3rd planet of an unremarkable yellow star. Ours. The race they created came to call their masters "The Watchers." For millennia we knew them as gods and served their dark purposes, but a few humans developed extraordinary powers. They were known as the Adepts and they rose up, banishing The Watchers into a parallel universe, where they've manipulated and schemed from afar. Until now.

Release Date: Q3 2008

Dark Void is still about a year away

We were hopeful that we'd see Capcom's new jet-packed shooter Dark Void sooner rather than later, but those hopes were dashed last week at Captivate 08 when we learned that the game was still "about a year" from completion.

It was a surprise because it was being shown so early, but mainly because of how darn good it looked.

No multiplayer in Dark Void

Considering how beloved Crimson Skies' multiplayer was and how much of that team made the leap to Airtight Games and Dark Void, you'd think multiplayer in that game would be a total lock. Not so, as we learned at last week's Capcom event, Captivate 08.

"We explored it, but there are so many huge features in this game, we really wanted to focus on making the most kick-ass, single-player features possible," said Capcom US director of design, Kraig Kujawa. As designer Jose Perez told us later, it was no easy choice.

"We had multiplayer up and going, it was fun, and to be honest, we just could tell we weren't going to be able to make the multiplayer game the way we wanted and the single-player game the way we wanted, so it was a really hard decision," Perez said. "For this version, we have a million innovative things that we're doing that haven't been done before and we have to get those right in the single-player experience."

E3 2008: Dark Void Update

Now we get to fly the skies.

While a lot of gamers have been following this year's E3 hoping for news on big franchises like Final Fantasy, Resistance and Fable, Dark Void -- a new IP from Capcom -- has also been drawing some glances. I was interested to see how this third-person shooter has come along after checking it out a month ago at Captivate '08 and I was happy to see that the demo running on the show floor was playable. Unfortunately, the experience was less than perfect, but the game is still very far out...

Dark Void to Shine With PhysX

Dark Void incorporates a unique vertical combat system that allows players to dangle from thousand foot drops as they take cover and drop enemies from above and below, bringing a whole new sense of vulnerability and thrill to gamers. The game's jetpack allows players to fly with reckless abandon while performing hair-raising stunts, taking the 3D action to a whole new level. Airtight Games is utilizing both NVIDIA PhysX and APEX technologies to deliver an inspired, interactive experience, complete with a GPU-accelerated particle system that is used extensively for weapons and debris effects.

"The extensive capabilities that NVIDIA PhysX and APEX technologies provide to developers are colossal," said Jim Deal, President at Airtight Games. "For example, the new APEX turbulence module that NVIDIA recently introduced allows us to have infinite artistic freedom in the way the game looks, plays, and feels. We hope that gamers will appreciate these fine touches when they play Dark Void later this year."

When it ships in the fall of 2009, Dark Void will have the distinction of being the first game to use dynamic, accurate smoke effects and smoke trails for the game's innovative jetpack, UFOs, and spaceships, all of which will be hardware-accelerated by GeForce GPUs when played on compatible desktop PCs.

Dark Void to release simultanously on PC and console

Capcom’s confirmed to VG247 that Dark Void will be a simultaneous ship for both PC and console.

Unless we’re very much mistaken, this is the first time the company’s matched SKUs in this way.

The Airtight Games project - which was looking mighty fine in its E3 videos - will release on PC, PS3 and 360 in 2009. There’s no specific date as yet.

The firm’s stepping up its PC efforts significantly this year, with computer versions of Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5 and Bionic Commando all on the slate.
