lookups.

o Expansion of nested domain groups via NSS calls.

o Support for Active Directory LDAP Signing policy.

o New LGPL Winbind client library (libwbclient.so).

o Support for establishing interdomain trust relationships with

Windows 2008.

 

Joining:

o New NetApi library for domain join related queries (libnetapi.so)

and example GTK+ Domain join gui.

o New client and server support for remotely joining and unjoining

Domains.

Mandriva is proud to announce the release of Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring Alpha 2, marking the first public pre-release of the upcoming Mandriva Linux 2009. This alpha introduces several significant changes, most obviously the inclusion of KDE 4 - 4.1 beta 2, specifically - as the default version of KDE, and the latest development version of GNOME, 2.23.4. The kernel has also been updated to release 2.6.26rc7. We emphasize that the KDE change is a major one that is not yet entirely completed and likely to cause many bugs. As always - but more importantly than ever - we remind you not to use pre-releases in any critical situation; install them only on a test system or partition, or in a virtual machine. Additionally, we strongly discourage using this pre-release to upgrade from any earlier release of Mandriva Linux, as the transition process from KDE 3 to KDE 4 is not yet fully implemented and you are likely to end up with an unusable system.

Overall, I find Mandriva Linux One Spring 2008 to be a very cohesive distro. I lament the fact that most of the major distros have given KDE second-class status and focus most of their development and utilities for Gnome. For example, in Fedora with KDE, I still need to launch the GTK program Pup to update my packages. Kubuntu comes close, but it just doesnʼt seem as well put-together as Ubuntu. So itʼs nice to see Mandriva championing the KDE. Their utilities seem very easy to use and their KDE menu is not messy at all. The Mandriva art team has put together nice backgrounds, login screens, etc Iʼm curious to see how they handle the move to KDE 4. I expect theyʼll be using KDE 4 for their fall release if KDE 4.1 remains on schedule and releases in July. Iʼm going to keep a close eye on Mandriva. I may jump ship to them one day. Iʼd certainly recommend it to new users although as of now Iʼd probably still recommend it alongside Ubuntu.

Blender 3D: Interview with Allan Brito

 

Blender is the open source, cross platform suite of tools for 3D creation, capable of modeling, rendering, and animating 3D environments. Since Blender is completely free, everyone can download and use it immediately in commercial projects. It's not a shareware with limited tools, or time constraints; you can use it freely. In the past few years, the Blender user base has grown significantly. One of the positive aspects of Blender is its size—it is only 10 MB and we can even run it directly from a portable drive. Another great aspect of Blender is that we can use various Operating Systems such as Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X, leaving us the choice of which one to use.

 

Packt spokesperson Meeba Abraham approached Allan Brito at the heart of this movement to understand his take on the future of Blender.

 

Meeba Abraham: Hi Allan, thank you for talking to us today, why donʼt you tell us a bit about yourself and your background; how did you start working with Blender?

 

Allan Brito: Hi, and thanks for this opportunity to talk a bit about myself. Well, Iʼm a 29 year-old architect from Brazil. After my graduation, I started working on visualization projects, mostly on 3ds Max for a small studio here in Brazil. After two years I started teaching 3D modeling and animation and I fell in love with teaching. I still teach 3D animation and modeling at a College here. With the help of my teaching experience, I began writing manuals and tutorials about 3D animation. Eventually, I decided to write a book about Blender in Portuguese, and the book was a huge success in Brazil. Currently I`m working on the third edition of this book. With the book, I also needed a way to keep in touch with the readers and discuss about Blender and 3D related stuff. So I started a web site (http://www.allanbrito.com), where I regularly write short articles and tutorials about Blender and its comparison with other 3D packages. Today the web site has grown considerably, and I continue to update it with content on Blender and other 3D software tools.

η GTK+ θα εξελιχθεί πολύ γρήγορα, υποχρεώνοντας το Gnome να κάνει το ίδιο

 

Η προσεχής άφιξη της GTK+ 3.0 θα δημιουργήσει ασυμβατότητα με τις προηγούμενες εκδόσεις.

 

Το Gnome 2.30 θα μπορεί επίσης να μεταπηδήσει σε Gnome 3.0 . Αυτή η έκδοση θα είναι διαθέσιμη αρχές 2010. Ήταν το επίκεντρο των συζητήσεων του Guadec 2008 - ετήσιο συνέδριο του Gnome - στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, την περασμένη εβδομάδα.

Σύμφωνα με τον Shuttleworth το μόνο εμπόδιο συνδέεται με την άδεια της Qt (GPL), λιγότερο ανεκτική από αυτή της GTK+ (LGPL). Τελικά θα είναι η Nokia -ο νέος ιδιοκτήτης της Trolltech, και άρα της Qt - να αποφασίσει αν μια αλλαγή της αδείας θα συμφερε την βιβλιοθήκη της

We are pleased to announce the release of VLC media player 0.8.6i.

This is a bugfix release. VLC media player 0.8.6h and earlier versions suffer from security vulnerabilities in the WAV demuxer.

This release also includes improved audio visualizations on FreeBSD and miscellaneous bug fixes in multiple modules.

More information can be found in our Security Advisory and in the Release Notes.

We strongly recommend all users to update to this new version.

This '1.0.2008' release has been buildt from a new toolchain based on gcc 4.2.2 and glibc 2.7. The 2.4 kernel is also not available for that releas, but you can continue using 2007 ISOs if you have to install linuxconsole on very old computers.

The kernel is 2.6.25.4, patched with squashfs (module format for linuxconsole) and aufs (can write on modules)

Since bootsplash is obsolete, usplash replaces it.

GNOME is available in 2.20 release, since it's very stable, an update to 2.22 will be available soon.

KDE is in 3.5.9 release, but not present on CD (not enough disk space). You can install it with modules manager or wait the 'DVD' release.

Mplayer 1.0rc2 has DVD navigation support built-in.

You can use it as 'livecd', install LinuxConsole 1.0.2008 on an empty hard disk, next Windows (95,98,XP,Vista simply inserting CD. The installation does not modify MBR , so you can't break you Windows. )

After that installation, you could add drivers et applications from modules manager.

A lot of 3D games have been tested with free drivers (Xorg7.3) and proprietary ones (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05 for new nvidia cards, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05 for older ones, ATICatlyst 8.6)
