Οσοι από εσάς διαβάσατε την πρόσφατη ανακοίνωση του προγράμματος έκδοσης Mandriva Linux 2009 μπορεί να αναρωτιέστε για την κατάσταση της Alpha 1, η οποία ήταν προγραμματισμένη να εκδοθεί στις 25 Ιουνίου. Λόγω μερικών σημαντικών προβλημάτων σε αυτήν την έκδοση σχετικά με το X.org, τη μετανάστευση από KDE 3 σε KDE 4, και την παραγωγή των εικόνων Οne, έχουμε αποφασίσει τη μη δημόσια έκδοση της Alpha 1. Εάν περιμέναμε να επιλύσουμε αυτά τα προβλήματα πρίν εκδόσουμε την Alpha 1 θα είχε εκδοθεί μόνο λίγες ημέρες πριν από την Alpha 2, μην επιτρέποντας μας αρκετό χρόνο για πραγματική δοκιμή. Επομένως η Alpha 1 θα υπάρξει μόνο ως εσωτερική έκδοση, και δεν θα δημοσιοποιηθεί. Η πρώτη δημόσια προ-έκδοση για Mandriva Linux 2009 θα είναι τώρα η Alpha 2, που θα εκδοθεί σύμφωνα με το αναγγελθέν πρόγραμμα, στις 10 Ιουλίου.

Surprise Desktop Linux Move: Xandros Buys Linspire

Practical Technology has learned from several sources that Linspire, the San Diego, Calif-based Linux distributor is being bought out by Xandros, the Canadian desktop Linux vendor.

In an announcement that was sent out today, June 30, to Linspire stockholders, CEO Larry Kettler wrote that the stockholders had decided to sell all of Linspireʼs assets. This deal specifically includes Linspire, Freespire, and the companyʼs distribution agnostic CNR (Click ʽN Run) desktop installation platform.

Gentoo Linux 2008.0 released

tuxThe 2008.0 final release is out! Code-named "It's got what plants crave," this release contains numerous new features including an updated installer, improved hardware support, a complete rework of profiles, and a move to Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD. LiveDVDs are not available for x86 or amd64, although they may become available in the future. The 2008.0 release also includes updated versions of many packages already available in your ebuild tree.

Updated installer: The installer now only performs networkless installations using the packages and ebuild tree on the LiveCD. It also contains numerous fixes for extended and logical partitions.

Improved hardware support: Moving to the 2.6.24 kernel added many new drivers for hardware released since the 2007.0 release.

Complete rework of profiles: Restructuring profiles allowed significant cleanup of redundancies, reducing developer maintenance and confusion. The difference for you is that profiles now appear in /usr/portage/profiles/ under default/linux/ instead of default-linux/. See the upgrading guide for more details.

Xfce instead of GNOME on the LiveCD: To save space, the LiveCDs switched to the smaller Xfce environment. This means that a binary installation using the LiveCD will install Xfce, but you're still free to build GNOME or KDE from source.

No LiveDVDs on x86 or amd64: In the interest of getting the release out, the release engineering team decided to postpone LiveDVDs because of problems in their generation. They may show up later—if so, we'll let you know.

Updated packages: Highlights of the 2008.0 release include Portage 2.1.4.4, a 2.6.24 kernel, Xfce 4.4.2, gcc 4.1.2 and glibc 2.6.1.

A big thanks goes out to our release engineering team members for their hard work over many months to turn 2008.0 into reality.

Before you begin

 

The Gentoo Linux Installer (GLI) provides a friendly introduction to the process of installing Gentoo on your computer. Remember to read each option carefully. There is detailed help available for each step of installation; just look to the left of each screen. We recommend that you always read the help pages before making your choices. Note that at any time during the installation process, you can save your configuration progress in case you need to resume your installation at a later time.

 

3.b. Partitioning

 

Preparing the disks

 

In order to install Gentoo on your machine, you will need to prepare your disks. The Partitioning screen will show you a list of detected disks and allow you to specify the filesystems you would like to have on your partitions. Clicking Clear partitions will erase all previous partitions on your disk, so be careful with this option! It is also possible to resize certain partition types.

 

If you choose to go with the Recommended layout, the installer will erase any previous partitions on your disk and create three partitions: 100MB for /boot, a /swap partition up to 512MB in size, and the rest of the available space on the disk is used for /, the root partition.

 

Warning: As with any partitioning application, you should backup your system before making changes to your partition table, as any possible bugs could cause data loss. Any changes you make to your partition table will be performed by the installer immediately.
