Microsoft Releases Moodle Plugin under GPL

http://www.linuxpromagazine.com/Online/News/Microsoft-Releases-Moodle-Plugin-under-GPL

Microsoft has again released code under GPLv2, this time the Live Services plugin Moodle.

Microsoft's contribution follows close on the heels of the release of its Hyper-V driver to the Linux kernel under GPLv2. The free Live Services Moodle educational website builder for teachers and students can now be tied in with the Live@edu service for email, calendars and IM. Teachers and students can use their Windows Live IDs to sign in to Moodle, allowing them access to the Live Hotmail, Live Calendar, Windows Live Messenger and, finally, the Bing search engine.

Microsoft Develops Plug-in for Moodle to Aid Teachers, Students

http://microsoftontheissues.com/cs/blogs/mscorp/archive/2009/07/21/microsoft-develops-plug-in-for-moodle-to-aid-teachers-students.aspx

....

This got us thinking: How can we integrate Live@edu services and Moodle applications, to make the learning and classroom experience even better?

Today, I am excited to announce the release of the Microsoft Live Services Plug-in for Moodle. This plug-in is a free download that provides integrated access to Live@edu services such as e-mail, calendar, instant messaging and search within the Moodle environment. This newly integrated experience is accessible via a single username and password. We believe this experience will enable more teachers and students to quickly and easily access the Live@edu resources they already use to efficiently communicate, collaborate and learn.

In designing this solution, we listened closely to teachers and developed the features they wanted. We also listened to education IT leaders and licensed the technology in a way that is consistent with the practices of the Moodle community – under the GPL v2 license. This means that teachers and education institutions can download the plug-in under a widely used, open -source license agreement -- and under the same terms that Moodle itself is licensed.

1. While respecting the right of every developer to choose the license that it believes best reflects its desires and needs, we support the four freedoms in the Free Software Definition.

For those of you not already familiar with the Four Freedoms, as originally propounded by Richard Stallman, they are:

The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0);

The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this;

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2); and

The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Thus, OAS does not seek to override the right of any developer and any user to select the license terms that it believes are best aligned to its own goals and philosophy, bu it does support those licensing models that are intended to lead to the creation of the greatest value for the community.

The Founding Principles continue as follows:

2. We applaud the commitment of the Administration to make the U.S. Federal government more transparent, participatory, secure, and efficient, and urge the U.S. Federal government to pursue this goal by leveraging the advantages of free and open source software.

3. We believe that the community can drive collaborative innovation in the U.S. government space, resulting in greater efficiencies and national competitiveness.

4. We believe the decision to use software should be driven solely by the requirements of the user, and not by a mandate for a particular brand, vendor, or development model.

Broad Coalition Formed to Promote Benefits and Adoption of Open Source Software in Government

Group includes diverse cross-section of technology industry leaders, associations, non-governmental organizations, communities and academic/research institutions

Washington, D.C. – July 22, 2009 – Today, a broad cross-section of more than 70 companies, academic institutions, communities, related groups and individuals joined together to announce the formation of Open Source for America, an organization that will serve as a unified voice for the promotion of open source software in the U.S. Federal Government arena. To register or learn more about the coalition, visit http://www.opensourceforamerica.org.

With the U.S. Federal Government increasingly focused on utilizing and adopting technologies to better serve citizens, there is growing recognition of the freedoms that open source software and open technology solutions can provide – an open, transparent and cost-effective option – for government agencies. Gartner recently estimated by 2011 more than 25 percent of government vertical, domain-specific applications will either be open source, contain open source application components or be developed as community source.

“Open source software can help deliver improved government service – plain and simple – and the Administration recognizes this more than any in our nation’s history,” said David Thomas, principal with Mehlman Vogel Castagnetti and spokesman for the Open Source for America campaign.

Microsoft Code in the Linux Kernel? It's OK, Linus Says So

http://www.daniweb.com/blogs/entry4569.html#

Quotes from Linus are in green text.

“Oh, I’m a big believer in “technology over politics”. I don’t care who it comes from, as long as there are solid reasons for the code, and as long as we don’t have to worry about licensing etc issues.

Thank goodness he's made this clear to everyone. Thanks, Linus. It's time someone like you said "technology over politics."

Federal Antimonopoly Service of the Russian Federation

ENGLISH VERSION | NEWS

Press-release of 21.07.2009

On 15th July 2009, the Commission of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS Russia) began proceedings in a case against «Асеr Inc.», «ASUSTeK Computer Inc.», «Toshiba Corporation», «Hewlett-Packard Company», « Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.» and «Dell Inc.» for the elements of violating the antimonopoly legislation. In accordance with the Determination of 20th July 2009, the FAS Russia's Commission, investigating the case, suspended the case until receiving additional evidence. The case will continue on 10th September 2009.

The case against the companies was initiated on 4th June 2009 for the elements of violating Clause 5 Part 1 Article 11 of the Federal Law «On Protection of Competition». It is suspected that the notebook manufacturers were engaged in concerted actions by pre-installing the operational system of the same vendor on the notebooks sold to consumers who in most cases did not have a possibility to choose and buy the required notebook model without a pre-installed operational system or refuse to use the product tied to their purchase (the operational system of the «Microsoft» Corporation).

The fact is, breaking regular user applications is simply not acceptable. Trying to blame kernel breakage on the app being "buggy" is not ok. And arguing for almost a week against fixing it - that's just crazy.

και η απάντηση του Ουαλού στον Φιλανδό :

I've been working on fixing it. I have spent a huge amount of time

working on the tty stuff trying to gradually get it sane without breaking

anything and fixing security holes along the way as they came up. I spent

the past two evenings working on the tty regressions.

However I've had enough. If you think that problem is easy to fix you fix

it.

Have fun.
