EU: Open Source Initiative approves European Union Public licence

The Open Source Initiative (OSI), one of the principal advocacy organisations on open source software, has unanimously approved the European Union Public Licence (EUPL) version 1.1 as an open source licence, on 4 March.

 

"This is very good news", commented Karel De Vriendt, head of the European Commission's e-Government program (Idabc) that is responsible for the development and maintenance of the open source licence. "OSI's decision certifies that the EUPL is 100 percent compliant with their definition of open source. This will help to convince European public administrations which are developing software for their e-Government systems, that the EUPL is a true open source licence."

 

Version 1.1 of the EUPL was published by the European Commission on 9 January. The licence is available in all official languages of the European Union, and all these 22 linguistic versions have identical value. This means that developers who want to use the licence can pick whichever language version they prefer.

 

Proliferation

 

The OSI is increasingly strict with new licences, to prevent licence proliferation, says Martin Michlmayr, one the OSI board members. In an interview with the German Linux Magazine Online last week, he said he expects the EUPL to be of true value. "For the first time we have a license available in all European languages, valid everywhere and with all translations legally scrutinised."

 

The EUPL is also compatible with the GNU Public License version 2 (GPLv2). Michlmayr: "If you combine EUPL code with GPLv2 code, you can distribute the combination under the terms of the GPL. Given the widespread adoption of GPLv2, that's a very useful provision."

Kodak releases scanning application for Linux

Kodak has released a free scanner application for Linux called ScanTWAIN that promises "production quality scanning." The software is released under the GNU General Public Licence (GPL) version 2 and comes with a complete GUI that supports all of the options of its Windows counterpart. Support is included for duplex scanning with automatic feeding of multiple pages through an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). An included API using TWAIN 2.0 allows users to create custom imaging solutions that can use individual components over a network. Kodak products are also supported by the SANE Project (Scanner Access Now Easy) that provides compatibility with imaging applications such as the GIMP and XSane.

So I guess it should come as no great surprise to discover that even as Hachamovitch was talking so a hacker called Nils from Germany was accepting a $5000 cash prize and a Sony Vaio laptop as his reward for successfully hacking IE8 at the annual PWN2OWN contest during the CanSecWest security conference.

 

This is the same conference that has already seen one chap successfully hack a MacBook in less than 10 seconds can you believe?

 

Nils, like the MacBook hacker, achieved his feat by exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability in the browser running on a recent build of Windows 7. The MacBook fell courtesy of a Safari exploit. The good news being that PWN2OWN sponsors TippingPoint use the prize money to purchase details of the vulnerability and any exploit code used, and then pass this information immediately to the vendors who can then work to fix the security holes exposed.

Η εταιρεια DroneBL που εξειδικεύεται με τον έλεγχο δικτύων, εντόπισε την εμφανιση ενος worm του Psyb0t που επιτίθεται σε routers με αρχιτεκτονική Mipsel και λειτουργικό συστημα Linux. Αφου μολυνθούν, ελέγχονται από ενα δικτυο botnet ικανο να εκτελέσει επιθέσεις μπλοκάροντας κάποιες υπηρεσίες.

 

Τετοιου τυπου router ειναι πχ ο Linksys WRT-54G με εναλλακτικά firmware τυπου OpenWRT.

 

 

Psyb0t uses a brute force dictionary attack against the router to obtain username and passwords. This shows that the exploitation is not an attack on the flaw in the operating system itself, but against poor user security.

Jerry Jalava, a young man from Finland, has all chances to become the world’s first cyborg. A part of his body has been equipped with the Linux Operating System. The man designed several programs for his finger, which works as a USB drive, infox.ru website wrote.

The man says that he is thrilled to have a 2GB memory stick instead of a finger. He wrote on his blog that it was a very useful device which could never be lost. “It is not attached permanently to my body so when I’m using the USB I just leave my finger inside the slot and pick it up when I’ve finished,” he said.

 

The readers of Germany’s Die Welt believe that the Finnish man has a right to claim the title of the first cyborg in the world.
