Ext4 completes development phase as interim step to btrfs

Ext4-Filesystem-Is-Closer-2.png

Linus Torvalds has integrated a large collection of patches prepared by (Ext) filesystem developer Theodore Ts'o (tytso) into the main development branch of Linux. It contains a patch for Ext4 which allows it to present itself as ext4 instead of ext4dev. This signals that with the next kernel version 2.6.28, the successor to ext3 will finally leave behind its "hot" development phase. The kernel developers integrated an early version of Ext4 in the main development branch of Linux 2.6.19 in order to jointly develop it to maturity there.

PCLinuxOS N1PTT-TR3 RELEASED! (2009 beta 1)

ON BEHALF OF TEXSTAR, The Ripper Gang is pleased to announce the first public beta ISO release of what will ultimately become PCLinuxOS 2009. Due to some very personal issues, Texstar has taken a temporary leave of absence, but not to worry folks, he'll be back very soon. grin.gif

We're releasing this series of beta iso's under the name of N1PTT to honor the loss of Robert Green, a long time dear friend of the PCLinuxOS community who recently succumbed to cancer. Rest in peace my friend.

This beta iso features kernel 2.6.26.6.tex2, KDE 3.5.10, Open Office 2.4.1, Firefox 3.0.3, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Frostwire, Ktorrent, Amarok, Flash, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D and much more.

We decided to use kde3-5-10 as our default desktop as the we could not achieve a similar functionality from kde4. We will however offer kde4 as an alternative desktop environment available from the repo once we stabilize it.

We request that only our more experienced PCLinuxOS users test this beta release and report any issues with it in the forum provided specially for it.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&board=49.0

Testers are advised to install this beta into a separate partition for temporary use only. This and any subsequent beta iso's are considered static installs and will not be upgradable to the 2009 Final, so please don't install this with the idea of using it long term as a work station. Some users may be asked to test file edits, etc; to attempt bug fixes, but updated packages will not necessarily be supplied. When enough bugfixes accumulate we will release the next beta iso.

Special thanks goes out to,

Gettinther, He's the one that really made this ISO happen. Thanks for pulling everything and everyone together!

The guys and gals from Mypclinuxos.com, Hack.mypclinuxos.com, and the Beatification team for their help and efforts in fixing problems, building packages, and making this distro look great. We couldn't have done it without them.

The PCLinuxOS community who stepped up to help us out and have been patient during this long wait.

Last but not least, Enki Consulting for providing hosting for our website and ibiblio.org for hosting our distribution.

The ISO and md5 files are currently available here with more mirrors coming on line as they sync up,

Repository changes will need a little time to catch up, please do not attempt to use Synaptic or install video drivers, etc; for a couple days. We'll let you know when things stabilize,

Thanks.

Fennec, ο firefox για κινητά

This is an early developer release of the mobile version of Firefox, for testing purposes only, intended to:

get wider community feedback on our approach to the user experience

engage Mozilla community teams, including localizers, add-on developers, and testers

get feedback from Web developers

Quick start

This first alpha release is available for the OS2008 ("Maemo") software platforms that runs on the Nokia N810 Internet Tablets. If you're viewing this on an N810, install Fennec.

Don't have an N810? Don't worry, you can still experiment with Fennec, provide feedback, write add-ons, and get involved by installing a version of Fennec for your desktop PC:

Windows

Mac OS X

Linux

The idea behind releasing the package for PCs is to give people who don't have a Nokia Internet Tablet the ability to localize, experiment and build add-ons. Note: The desktop version of Fennec is not a supported product.

The thing is who answers these questionnaires, 'cos if the company I work for were asked if it used Linux it would undoubtedly say it doesn't. But this isn't the truth, it is a comms company. I know the radio telephone units run linux 2.4.xx, the routers : linux. And some test equipment too, but say to the boss it's interesting the amount of open source software we're using these days and he doesn't know what I'm taking about!

I just love the way that Linux creeps up on companies from the bottom... they just don't know whats happing... 'cos it just works and doesn't give them any reason to question it.

April this year we started a new project here in Oslo called “Qt for S60″ and Iʼve been wanting to blog about it ever since. Now I finally can! Basically weʼre porting Qt to yet another platform: S60, which roughly gives us around 80 million new devices Qt can run on. Our vision of Qt Everywhere is becoming more and more of a reality. And it feels good.

Letʼs get to the important stuff. Click here to:

download the pre-release packages

see the video of Qt running on 3 different phones

see the webcast to learn how to get Qt running on your phone

download our fluidlauncher demo to try it out on your phone

The Linux operating system is the most popular open source operating system in computing today, representing a $25 billion ecosystem in 2008.1 Since its inception in 1991, it has grown to become a force in computing, powering everything from the New York Stock Exchange to mobile phones to supercomputers to consumer devices.

As an open operating system, Linux is developed collaboratively, meaning no one company is solely responsible for its development or ongoing support. Companies participating in the Linux economy share research and development costs with their partners and competitors. This spreading of development burden amongst individuals and companies has resulted in a large and efficient ecosystem and unheralded software innovation.

Over 1,000 developers, from at least 100 different companies, contribute to every kernel release. In the past two years alone, over 3,200 developers from 200 companies have contributed to the kernel.2 Itʼs important to note that the kernel is just one small piece of a Linux distribution. A distribution is actually made up of multiple components including the kernel, the GNOME and KDE desktop environments, the GNU components, the X window system, and many more. The total of individual developers contributing to these projects surely numbers in the thousands.

The ministry has so far migrated almost four thousand of its desktops to GNU/Linux and expects to complete the move by the summer of 2009, Schuster said. About half of all the 230 embassies and consulates have now been switched over. "It is not without problems. It took a while to find a developer in Japan to help us with some font issues we had in Open Office."
Που τον βρηκαν τον Γιαπωνέζο;

Δεν ειχε ο Γιαπωνεζος προβλημα με τα fonts και ειχαν οι Γερμανοί

The biggest hurdle proved to be to convince the two hundred IT workers a the ministry. "Their issues were not technical. They just did not know anything about Linux and Open Source and we had to change their views. We took all of them on a crash course of using Linux servers and configuring Apache. There they discovered that it works."
