September 24 is World Day Against Software Patents

Five years ago, on 24 September 2003, the European Parliament adopted amendments to limit the scope of patent law and thereby protect small software companies from the harmful effects of broad and trivial software patents. A global petition asking to effectively stop software patents worldwide will be launched on 24 September 2008, together with specific additional requests for certain regions such as Europe, the United States or India. — read more

Q. I have an AMD computer, which I set up to dual boot to Windows or Ubuntu Linux until I rashly tried to install XP Service Pack 3. It went well at first but the computer rebooted before completion and the promised safeguard of a System Restore failed to work, leaving a blank screen and no error message. I am forced to use the power switch at the wall socket to reboot.

Do I now have to reinstall Windows XP (and Ubuntu) or if there are ways of retrieving files from the Windows partition using Linux. At present Ubuntu indicates the HDD cannot be mounted but gives an example of a forced option. Do you think this would work or just make the situation worse?

Foresight Linux's development team just rolled out a mobile version of their distribution. This new release is no lightweight at 530MB, but it does offer a whole range of functionality and pre-installed software along with a Gnome desktop that was specially created for smaller displays. Some of the more interested packages crammed in include F-Spot Photo Manager, Firefox, Pidgin Instant Messenger, Banshee Media Player, GNOME Movie Player, and Network Manager. The Foresight Mobile has been tested on both the Asus Eee PC and Intel Classmate PC, so it can be safe to assume that this latest distribution package will run just fine on the MSI Wind and Acer Aspire One as well.

After two years in development, VLC, the universal media player, has moved from the 0.8.x versions to version 0.9.2. The release, named "Grishenko", is available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and other operating systems, is available to download from the Videolan web site. The most visible new feature in the Windows and Linux versions is a new user interface. The new interface uses Qt4, replacing the previous wxWidgets-based interface as the default interface and allowing for better internationalisation and a richer set of graphical controls.
