Kainourgia F1??<P>Formula One promoter Bernie Ecclestone said on Friday that Europe's major carmakers could wreck top-level motor racing if they proceeded with declared plans to set up a rival championship to Formula One. <P>In an interview with the Financial Times, Ecclestone said: "It has taken me 30 years to build up Formula One into what it is today and it could take just six months to destroy it." <P>On Wednesday, Europe's major carmakers said they would set up a rival tour to the Formula One championship in a bid to wrench control of the sport away from German media group Kirch and its partner EM.TV . <P>The carmakers' announcement, which could revolutionise one of the world's most glamorous and lucrative sports, was made in a statement by Paolo Cantarella, chairman of both the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) and Italian carmaker Fiat. ACEA's members include Fiat, Ford, BMW AG, Renault and DaimlerChrysler, all of which have interests in Formula One racing teams. <P>ACEA has been trying for months to block a bid by Kirch and EM.TV & Merchandising AG to gain a greater hold on the rights to broadcast Formula One races. <P>"The bottom line is that the manufacturers had the opportunity to come in, through EMTV, long before Kirch came on the scene," said Ecclestone. "It was a good proposal that they didn't take up." <P>ACEA says it fears the German companies will attempt to shift the sport from free-to-air to pay-per-view television, an accusation Kirch and EM.TV have rejected. <P>But Ecclestone was quoted by the Financial Times as saying that a rival championship "would be bad for everybody. Formula One is a very stable, sound business with huge television and press coverage." <P>Major multinational sponsors and broadcasters would rapidly lose interest if Formula One was broken up into two competing series. <BR>--------------------------------------------<BR>Michael Schumacher will have retired by the time a proposed rival to the Formula One series comes into being, the world champion said on Thursday. <P>European carmakers - including the Fiat group which owns Schumacher's Ferrari team - have said they plan to set up an alternative championship to Formula One. <P>Their aim is to wrench control of the rights to broadcast the sport away from German media group Kirch and its partner EM.TV, who they fear want to sell the rights to pay-per-view television channels. <P>But Schumacher, three times world champion, said he would have stopped racing by the time it ever gets off the ground. <P>"When would it start, in six year's time?," the German asked reporters after a test session at the Fiorano circuit in central Italy. <P>"I don't think I'll be on the circuit by then." <P>Schumacher said he shared the concerns of Fiat and other manufacturers that Kirch and EM.TV - which own a 75 percent stake in commercial and broadcast rights group SLEC - might restrict television viewing of the sport to those who can afford to pay. <P>"I'm convinced that Formula One should be a patrimony for everyone and that everyone should be able to see it," he said. <BR>--------------------------------------------<BR>Speculation that Formula One's top teams might form a rival circuit is a lot of talk and any such move is "a lifetime away", an Australian motor racing official said on Friday. <P>Grand Prix Corporation chief executive John Harnden said threats by Europe's major carmakers to set up a rival tour to the Formula One championship, in a bid to wrench control of the sport away from German media group Kirch and its partner EM.TV, would not come to fruition until at least 2008, if at all. <P>"When you look at Formula One, it's really going forward so strongly, all of the parties involved know that to disenfranchise that is going to be to everybody's detriment," Harnden told reporters. <P>He said breakaway competitions in other sports had been disasters. <P>"It's really hard to speculate (on whether fans would be loyal to a rival circuit) and I don't think in any way, shape or form it's something that's going to come to a reality," Harnden said. <P>"I think it's all about positioning and making certain they (the carmakers) were listened to and it would be wrong of both Kirch and Bernie Ecclestone to ignore them - and they won't." <P>The carmakers said on Wednesday they were threatening to launch a racing circuit to rival Formula One, a series of races that attract an estimated global TV audience of 300 million. <P>Television rights are at the centre of a complex battle between Kirch and EM.TV on the one hand, and the carmakers on the other. <BR>--------------------------------------------<BR>Formula One motor racing supremo Bernie Ecclestone pledged on Friday to keep the sport on free-to-air television as he tries to counter a threat by car makers to set up a rival series. <P>Ecclestone said he would remain at the head of Formula One for the next five years following a deal in which German media company Kirch effectively acquired a 75 percent stake in SLEC, the Formula One holding company. <P>"I have been assured that my policy of securing worldwide extensive live free over the air TV coverage remains unchanged, and that races will only be allocated into countries which will be in the best interests of the teams, manufacturers and sponsors," Ecclestone said in a statement released in Geneva. <P>Europe's leading car makers including Ferrari threatened on Wednesday to set up a rival series in a power struggle over TV rights and commercial control of the sport. <P>The car makers fear that Kirch would migrate the sport to pay television channels, depriving sponsors of the mass audience they seek in return for bankrolling the teams. <P>Ecclestone, the man who turned Formula One into a huge money-spinner, retains a 25 percent stake in SLEC. <BR> <A HREF="http://www.insomnia.gr/cpubb/smilies/cwm15.gif'>http://www.insomnia.gr/cpubb/smilies/cwm15.gif[/img]" TARGET=_blank>http://www.insomnia.gr/cpubb/smilies/cwm15.gif[/img]</A> <BR>Giati i F1 einai aparaititi gia tin zoi mas kai tin iparksi mas kai den prepei na mas endiaferei mono o Schumi i ferrari kai i McLaren ktl ktl alla kai osa ginontai sxetika me to mellon tou athlimatos<P>Filika,<BR>GR-Judge_Dred[bB]
