Rap music began in the 1970s among the youth of New York City's South Bronx.Its roots lie in the rhythmic storytelling with musical accompaniment characteristic of ancient African traditions.Rap also stems from syncopated beats and verbal boasts typical of Jamaican ska and reggae music.These musical styles reached New York with the influx of immigrants in the '70s and mixed with indegenous jazz,rhythm and blues as well as rock to create hip-hop music - rap's musical starting point.

 

Rappers initially performed on inner city streets ,insubways and at community centers and clubs.In eloquent,lyrical but angry "speech poetry",they related realities of inner city life - poverty,unemploymentmdrugs and violence - to the accompaniment of musicians and ,usually, a breakdancer.Rap entered the studio in the mid-1970's, when African-American disck jockets began "talking out" against a background of remixed funk and disck as well as original music.l Tracks often included authentic sounds of the city: screeching tiers, sirens, and the noise of gunfire .

 

By the 1980s, while gaining a wider audiance, rap had become highly controversial. Rappers' distrust of the police, and their call to act out against police brutality , resulted in police sureveillance.Rappers,who are sometimes felons,drug dealers, or convicted members-turned-performers , have been criticized for their reputed sanctioning of drug-dealing, expliciti obscenity and misogyny.Thus,rap lyrics have procoked an ongoing debate over unresolved issues of freedom and freedom of speech versus censorship.

 

After the murders of several rappers in 1996 and 1997 , rap's alleged advocacy of violence seems to have toned down.Rap continues , hoever, to be an extremely popular form of artistic expression.
