Ενδιαφέρον συνέντευξη του Randy Pitchford:

Maximum PC: We see a lot of games developed simultaneously on multiple platforms, where the PC is very clearly a second-class citizen compared to the Xbox and PS3 SKUs. What have you guys done differently with Borderlands?

Randy Pitchford: The first thing is that we author our content on the PC. With Borderlands, we’re not porting the game to the PC, we’re starting there. The PC is our development platform.

The best-looking version of the game that you’re going to get is on PC. We target a high-end PC, but it’s scalable so you’ll still have a great experience on a 2-year-old PC. A 2-year-old PC will be comparable to the Xbox experience.

MPC: So people who can play Team Fortress 2 or Left4Dead will be in good shape to play Borderlands?

RP: Absolutely! We author on the PC, so the console versions are kind of reduced sets of the ideal content. Having said that, it is a first person shooter, which feels natural to play with the mouse and keyboard. Gearbox’s roots are in PC development, so we think a lot about that. We have a separate set of guys who are entirely focused on the PC version. Lots of games that are multi-platform don’t account for the mouse, in the menus, in the inventory screens, and the rest of the game.

For example, when we helped Activision bring Tony Hawk to the PC, they had this weird virtual keyboard. I didn’t need to use a joystick to navigate to the letter on the virtual keyboard because my PC already had a keyboard! We understand what people expect on the PC. With Borderlands, it’s different. We’re not porting the game to the PC, we’re starting there.

Borderlands Zombie DLC Announced

2K Games announced today that the first piece of downloadable content for Borderlands, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, is planned for release later this year for all available platforms for $9.99 (800 Microsoft Points). The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is in development at Gearbox Software and is the first in a series of downloadable expansions that will enhance the Borderlands mayhem in fun and exciting ways.

Tasked with keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, Dr. Ned (who is not related to Dr. Zed from Fyrestone) does his job a little too well, creating zombies and other abominations that now run rampant in this region. Players will have to work alongside Dr. Ned as they embark on a quest to cure the inhabitants of Jakobs Cove in this full-fledged expansion filled with new enemies, new quests and rare loot drops.

Featuring extensive co-op integration that seamlessly blends the single-player and multiplayer experiences, Borderlands allows players to freely join or leave each other’s games at any time for collaborative mayhem or the freedom to choose to play in full single-player mode to experience the world on their own. Borderlands also includes a groundbreaking weapon generation system that offers a near infinite variety of weapons to the player. Borderlands combines these features with addictive non-stop action to form a breakthrough experience that challenges the conventions of modern shooters and RPGs.

Borderlands - IGN Review

Gearbox Software delivers a stylish, fun, and frantic shoot and loot experience.

Closing Comments

Gearbox's Borderlands is without a doubt a slick, satisfying hybrid title for those who know what to expect. If you're a shooter fan curious what the world of Pandora is all about, then you should know that this is a product built on a foundation of statistical progression, character customization, and one that holds item acquisition high above interesting quest structure and narrative. At the same time, it plays like a shooter, requiring twitch skills to dominate the droves of enemies that stand in between you and your search for a mysterious vault. With the opportunity for up to four to join together for co-operative play, four character classes, a dizzying array of firearms, around 20 or so hours of content for a single playthrough and the option to restart with stronger enemies and loot, there's plenty of content here. It's a thoroughly enjoyable journey that offers a steady stream of rewards that remains convenient and accessible. It's something action role-playing game fans looking for an experience more up-close and brutal than genre entries of the third-person variety should have a blast with, and one of the more memorable products of 2009.
