Borderlands Slated for October

Developer Gearbox Software is targeting an October release for its post-apocalyptic shooter-RPG Borderlands, the studio told Shacknews during a recent interview.

Originally expected last year, the game was then pushed into 2009, with publisher Take-Two Interactive merely stating that it would arrive no later than October 31, 2009.

Gearbox says there are “millions and millions” of guns in Borderlands

Gearbox president and founder Randy Pitchford has said that not only are there “dozens and dozens” of gameplay hours possible in Borderlands, but there are “millions and millions” of guns as well, thanks to the AI created for the game.

“There are literally millions and millions of guns in Borderlands, more guns than we could have built,” Pitchford told D’toid. “I mean, there’s more guns in Borderlands than all of the first-person shooters on the 360 and all the shooters on the PlayStation added together. And if you took all the development teams and said “Make guns the way you used to make them,” you couldn’t make that many guns.

“So what we did instead was, instead of trying to do that — which would have been an impossible task — we wrote artificial intelligence software and a gear builder system that actually built the guns for us. And we created all of these manufacturers and all of these materials, like metals and plastics and all kinds of different materials, and all of these components of weapons and all of these classes of weapons. And then manufacturers have their own styles.

“We fed this all into our software and our A.I., and let that build the guns for us. It’s pretty wild stuff man, and I don’t think anyone’s ever tried that. We’ve got some really smart folks on the software development team that worked all that out.

“It blows my mind every day, man. Everyday I’m discovering things I’ve never seen before.”

Borlderlands Gets Solid Release Date

At last month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Gearbox Software revealed that its eagerly anticipated "role-playing shooter" Borderlands would ship in October. Now, with retail lines being drawn in the holiday-quarter sand, 2K Games has locked down the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 title's exact launch date: October 20 in North America, and October 23 in the UK, mainland Europe, Australia, and other territories.

Pitchford: PC Borderlands “destroys console versions in terms of image fidelity”

Don’t mince those words, Randy Pitchford, Gearbox super-honcho. Want to know what Borderlands version to get if you want it looking at its best? PC. It “destroys” the 360 and PS3 versions visually.

“The PC version destroys all the console versions in terms of the image fidelity – assuming you have the hardware for it,” he told RPS.

So we all buy the PC version, right Randy? Not so fast, kiddlewinks.

“It’s tough. It’s very tough, I’ll tell ya,” Pitchford added. “On one level I do like sitting on my couch with the surround sound and the wireless controller, on the other level I mean you will not get a better-looking image than in the PC version of the game.

“And when you’re playing a first-person shooter, the mouse and keyboard interface is still the best way to go. It’s a tough thing.

The RPG-shooter hybrid’s out on October 23.

Borderlands Gets Slightly Delayed

PC version of game pushed back slightly for "optimization."

Looking forward to blasting your way across Pandora with the four adventurers of Borderlands? The action-RPG-shooter from Gearbox is one of the most anticipated games of this fall season, and its character customization, co-op play and visual style has intrigued many players. However, if you're a PC owner, you're going to have a bit more waiting in your future.

The PC version is sliding back from its original release date of October 20 in North America to October 26. The international version of the PC game will slide back further to October 30. The North American PS3 and 360 versions of the game will be unaffected, and the international versions for the PS3 and 360 will still ship on October 23.

We contacted 2K Games for an explanation on the slight delay for the game, and Charlie Sinhaseni, Senior PR Manager said, "We're optimizing the PC version which takes a few days longer than expected. Borderlands for PC will ship on October 26th."
