For years games have put you as the hero of the day, saving the people from terror. Then came games that gave you the option of good or evil. Now comes the game that places you as the Overlord, an evil megalomaniac whose goal in life is to become the universe's most evil man!

Have you ever wondered what would happen in a game if you didn't save the day? Ever wanted to let the citizens of Albion in Fable be destroyed by bandits? Ever wished you were on the side of Lord Dagon, enslaving Tamriel? Ever desired that the Covenant overran planet Earth, placing you at its throne? Then Overlord is certainly a game for you!

"You are an evil, demonic lord who is desperate to rule the world. Who isn't? "

Overlord presents a simple concept. You are an evil, demonic lord who is desperate to rule the world. Who isn't? But here's a guy who lives his dream. He calls upon his loyal army of minions and decides to set out on the way to total domination. And we all know, especially in medieval times, that there's one real man's way to do it. Invasion. In Overlord you can simply march into a village, summon up plenty of minions with your unique spells, and send them in to kill the men and ravage the women and other such formalities. If you like, or when necessary, you can get stuck in there yourself, with what looks like, from screenshots, either a sword or an axe. Maybe other weapons are on offer?

The idea of minions is certainly an interesting one. It's perhaps not completely unique or original idea, but it gives you many options for controlling your people. You can try to equip your imps with better armour and weaponry, or alternatively, you can destroy those meddlesome peasants altogether by sending the minions in with huge mines to blow everything up. Every death they cause enables them to reproduce, by harvesting souls, until you have a massive legion of servants. Once you control a village, you have to make sure it stays loyal, which is where there's more fun to be had. You can place huge banners ordering villagers to obey, or even demand the odd sacrifice or two, such as the traditional virgin. You are an evil Overlord, after all.

"You can place huge banners ordering villagers to obey"

But it's not all doom and gloom. This game brings and excellent comedy feel to the 360, with cutesy cartoon graphics reminiscent of Fable, and the odd amusing game feature. One of our favourites is the fact your minions, who are otherwise completely loyal and unbending, fighting to death or victory, can be distracted. If a minstrel is in town and starts playing, the imps cannot resist dancing! They don't stop until you take control and slaughter the defiant villager, during which time the more resistant peoples will have killed a few with their armed militia.

There even looks to be an element of choice in Overlord, in that you can attempt to be good in the game by not killing anyone! It's probably heaps more fun to go on a killing rampage though! However, there will be occassions where appeasement is the best option. If a village has been overrun by halfling-louts who are more than a nuisance to villagers, the best option is to defeat them, hence saving the villagers. They will be eternally grateful, and swear allegiance to you! Until you show them your control regime that is....

Gamespot reviews Overlord. 6.5

As overreaching as Overlord can be, it's still preferable for a game to try and fall a little short than for it to simply scrape by with just enough, and the game should be commended for its efforts. It's a good-looking game, and watching the minions do their stuff does provide a deviant thrill, though the shortcomings of the controls and the bad camera get in the way. Ultimately, though, Overlord just isn't evil enough to live up to its name
