2D gaming mourns as Neo-Geo passes on

If there was any one platform that I had an unabashed, biased love for, it would most certainly be the Neo-Geo. SNK Playmore's 2D wonder-machine was easily my favorite console of all time, as it was home to a variety of my all-time favorite games: Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury and many more. It was an expensive beast, but it pumped out some of the best 2D visuals and produced some of the best 2D gameplay the world has ever known.

It's been quite a while since I sat down and played on an actual Neo-Geo machine; I'd been hoping to pick up a secondhand one recently, but now it seems that my chances of finding one for a decent price just got more remote. SNK Playmore has announced that, due to the difficulty in acquiring and servicing some of the decade-old parts, repair and maintenance will no longer be offered on the unit or any peripherals, including games. The company offered condolences and one last chance for users to send in their old units on its Japanese web site.

Thankfully, Neo-Geo fans aren't totally out of luck. We previously heard word that the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console will be picking up titles, and for those who own the old roms and discs, emulators are always available. Still, it's sad to see the old black beauty go; let's wave a last goodbye to the era of 2D supremacy.
