Interview - Splinter Cell: Conviction

At E3 2009, nobody with a pair of eyes could deny that Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction looked utterly flooring – and it appears to play just as well. Sam Fisher is back and frankly, we're almost positive this will be his finest, most original adventure yet.

After an extended behind-closed-doors demo, we sat down with Conviction's Creative Director, Maxime Béland, for an in-depth discussion on where the game' concept began, where it's going, the level of immersion and a handful of very cool points on what still needs to be done before Maxime and team will be satisfied. He also drops a few hints about Sam's next steps after the E3 mission – so read on!

Guillemot: Splinter Cell delayed for “additional polishing time”

If you thought there was some big conspiracy behind the recently announced delays of Splinter Cell: Conviction and Red Steel 2, prepare to be disappointed. Turns out, Ubisoft just thought the two games could use a bit more time in the powder room.

The changes on Splinter Cell and Red Steel – it’s just a question of polish. The team was asking that they couldn’t be with the level of quality on all the maps and all the game for the end of the year, so they had asked for more time to be able to come with a better product, for both of those games,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said during a recent earnings call.

The quality of the games is there for what you’ve been able to see at E3, but we were not able to have that same quality on the full game of those two products,” he added.

He also revealed that, by missing the chance to stuff gamers’ stockings this holiday season, Splinter Cell and Red Steel will probably sell “around a million units” fewer in their respective first months. Madness? Not quite. “We really think with the level of quality that we’ll be able to obtain with the time we give them we will have a long shelf life for those products,” he explained.

Splinter Cell Conviction has co-op, "new mode"

Reveal planned next month, says PC Zone

The first concrete details on Splinter Cell Conviction's multiplayer mode are in, via the back page of the latest issue of PC Zone magazine.

According to the mag, its next issue will include "hands-on, co-op reveal and a brand new mode." And that's it.

Of course it's not the first time the series has included co-op; the original Xbox's Chaos Theory featured Xbox Live spy collaboration missions, while Splinter Cell's trademark mercs vs. spies multiplayer was very much a team game.

The Splinter Cell issue of PC Zone is out on December 23.

Splinter Cell Conviction features co-op prologue campaign

It has been revealed today that the much anticipated Splinter Cell Conviction title is set to include a co-op campaign portion, that will not only act as a prologue to the main storyline but also be of a sizeable length at around six hours.

Placing players in the roles of Daniel Sloane-Suarez (callsign Archer) and Mikhail Loskov (codename Kestrel), the pair will initially not get along at first. “They don’t really like each other or trust each other,” says Patrick Redding, Co-op Game Designer before continuing “but you’ll hear in their dialogue, moving through the missions, that their trust is slowly building.”

Archer and Kestrel’s storyline will begin two months before that of the single player campaign, and will detail how EMP’s have been liberated by rogue factions within Russian Intelligence and then sold on to members of the Russian Mafia. Due to such a fact, the co-op campaign will immediately begin within the heart of St. Petersburg in a mob den.

Redding explains “You are going into this really seedy, gritty underbelly where we can put the whole graphical horsepower of our engine and the Xbox 360 to work giving you the lurid texture of this place.”

The emphasis on such a co-op portion is based upon communication, tactics and looking out for each other. “If Sam Fisher is our panther, then these two guys are like a couple of Velociraptors taking down the herd,” states Redding.
