privateer Δημοσ. 25 Οκτωβρίου 2006 Δημοσ. 25 Οκτωβρίου 2006 Richard A. Knaak, the author of The Sin War trilogy of Diablo books, participated in an IRC chat in which he spoke about Diablo and the upcoming thrid installment. He claims that he is not "writing for a dead world." Certainly not a hard confirmation, but good enough for the rumor mill : Q: Any information on Diablo 3? Have you been asked to write a further story? A: What happens in the Sin War is significant, as I mentioned, toward the future. I know that Blizzard is very eager to make Diablo fans happy. Q: How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game? A: This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project...and I ain't writing for a dead game. Q: So... Diablo 3? A: I am not writing for a dead world...but a world with dead. Nuff said.

privateer Δημοσ. 6 Ιουνίου 2007 Μέλος Δημοσ. 6 Ιουνίου 2007 Diablo 3 at BlizzCon 2007? The announcement of the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals 2007 held in South Korea, and its one-week splash page teaser got many Diablo fans hyped up. When Starcraft 2 was announced, Diablo fansʼ hopes went down the drain. I have seen reactions at different Diablo forums, including the official forums, where fans have lost all hope for Diablo III. I would say to those fans, it is not over until the fat lady sings. Diablo is coming … there is no doubt of that. The signs of its coming is all over the place. You just have to be sharp to notice. Blizzard has been hiring developer staff for the last three years. The job descriptions in the past three years have clearly stated the job openings were for the “Diablo Team”. Here is an example: New Position: Game Systems Designer Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented and experienced game designer to work with the developers of Diablo and Diablo II. Duties will include working on general game design, rules systems, play balance, interface design and multiplayer features. Check out the Game Systems Designer posting for more information. The signs of a Diablo game in the works has been tracked down to 2003, after the Blizzard North Executives resigned. An under development game was revealed to be brewing at San Francisco offices back then. Shortly after, all Blizzard North remaining personnel was relocated to Irvine headquarters. Just because the San Francisco offices were shut down, doesnʼt mean Blizzard North and their game are over. You can read it over at GamesIndustry.biz — the Blizzard North team was relocated to Irvine and they have been working on a Diablo franchise game. (Date: March 8, 2005): “Blizzard North was working on an unannounced project - widely believed to be a new game in the hugely popular Diablo franchise - which the team will continue after its move to the Irvine studio.” Back on October 2006, I personally interviewed Richard A. Knaak - New York Times Best-selling fantasy author. When asked if the storyline of his novel Diablo: The Sin War trilogy would impact the storyline of future Diablo projects, here is what he said: Knaak: “This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris Metzen/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project … and I ainʼt writing for a dead game. ” When a fan asked him a short and straight simple question: Diablo 3?, all he replied was ” I am not writing for a dead world … but a world with dead. ʼnuff said!” This sparked a chain reaction in the Diablo community and beyond. Even Gamespot considered this a confirmation of Diablo 3 existence, under their rumor control section. Blizzard is very lip-tight when it comes to their games under development. No one ever saw Starcraft 2 being in development. The latest interviews have revealed that Blizzard has been developing Starcraft 2 since 2003, shortly after Warcraft III: Frozen Throne was launched to the shelves. The last Diablo game was Diablo II: Lord of Destruction back on 2003. Seeing how the RTS Team got to work on ideas for Starcraft 2 so quick after the release of the Warcraft III expansion it is save to assume a Diablo game started shortly after Lord of Destruction. The news of a next Diablo game has been widespread since 2003. The signs are there. Some two years ago, there was a rumor that a Diablo MMO would be revealed at BlizzCon 2005. Nothing happened. The game was not even mentioned. However, BlizzCon 2007 will be the stage for the Diablo game announcement. Last year, Paul Sams told to IGN the following: StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time,” Sams told us. “As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2.” While Sams wasnʼt ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard “will have a major product announcement in 2007,” and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment. Paul Sams confirmed there were three unannounced projects. Now we know Starcraft 2 was one of them. The second unannounced game is a World of Warcraft expansion. Last year, Blizzard commented on plans to ship an expansion yearly. That leaves one unannounced game … and one possible franchise. Diablo is coming. The splash page teaser prior to Starcraft II announcement, was very revealing. First, the Starcraft splash page had the following Kerrigan quote: “I am the Queen of Blades, and my stare alone would reduce you to ashes!”. That was no accident. We were fed hints. Each Blizzard Team gives a top secret codename to their games. This way other teams and employees do not know what others are working on. The RTS Team used the codename Medusa. A mythical gorgon whose stare would turn anyone to stone. When the Diablo splash page came up during the teaser-week, strangely the Deckard Cain quote used was: “Stay awhile and Listen!” Is Blizzard sending smoke signals? Should we wait awhile until BlizzCon 2007 for a Diablo franchise announcement? That is the only unannounced game we donʼt know for certain. The other two were Starcraft 2 and the most likely second World of Warcraft expansion. A few years ago, Blizzard set a lawsuit against the production of a film titled “El Diablo”, featuring Vin Diesel. The film had to change its name to “A Man Apart“. Blizzard reserves the trademark of Diablo for both films and games. This latest rumor with Gary Whitta at center stage does rises further speculations. The most recent rumor about Diablo was Gary Whitta could be writing a screenplay for Legendary Pictures to produce a Diablo film. This has not been confirmed, but there is precedent that Gary Whitta has submited sample fiction scripts to Blizzard Entertainment. One of the samples can be found at his website, titled Starcraft: Three Wars — a sample to demonstrate to Blizzard how their franchise novels could be ported to film. Whether on film or as a game, the Diablo franchise is very sought after by many fans around the world. BlizzCon 2007 represents a huge hope to all Diablo fans. August 3-5 will be dates no one will miss in the calendar. You can miss your marriage anniversary, your birthday and even Motherʼs day … but loyal RPG fans wonʼt miss BlizzCon 2007ʼs. Will it mimic Starcraft II going back to its roots and remain a Diablo hackʼn slash game or should we see a Diablo MMO? That is yet another question to ponder. It is no secret the Diablo formula has worked pretty well in World of Warcraft adding the class trees and weapon/gear gem sockets. In that sense, it is very likely Diabloʼs next incarnation could be a MMORPG. I personally would like a Diablo III hackʼn slash game, but a MMORPG would open a lot of new frontiers for the franchise. If you havenʼt read Diablo: The Sin War trilogy by Richard A. Knaak, I recommend you to do so now. The sin war, is an event in the past of Tristam that took place three thousand years ago — according to the Diablo 1 game manual. The novel explores what happened then, but as Knaak said, retconning some of it to fit upcoming diablo games. Inarius - a former commander of the High Heavens - becomes a rogue angel tired of the eternal war against the Burning Hells. He swayed other angels with him and departed the High Heavens to seek their own destiny. Angel Inarius contacted demons who also wished to end the conflict and together formed a third faction of rogue angels and rogue demons. Inarius created Sanctuary, and the worldstone was built with the purpose to cloak the existence of Sanctuary from the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. Angel Inarius and Demon Lilith fell in love. The progeny of both angel and demon were known as the nephalem, who inhabited Sanctuary under the rule of Inarius. Lilith is the character introduced by Blizzard Entertainment in Diablo II patch 1.11 — a character with deeper story than anyone thought. She is the daughter of Mephisto and also the catalyst that caused the Sin War. Lilith betrayed Inarius and took the children, the nephalem, to empower her agenda during the Sin War. However, Inarius put an end to the conflict and the Worldstone was modified to depower the children. For as long as the Worldstone stood, no entity from the High Heaven or the Burning Hells would be able to know the existence of Sanctuary, nor able to enter it. And the children would remain depowered. However, through Lucion — another son of Mephisto, Diablo knew of the existence of Sanctuary. Thus, Angel Izual revealed the Prime Evils the secrets of the Soulstones and planned their own exile, becoming trapped by the soulstones. Now that Tyrael destroyed the Worldstone, the children are no longer depowered. This shall trigger the rise of the nephalem and powerful entities. The perfect setting for a MMORPG. Will you side Heaven? Will you side Hell? A MMORPG would seriously become a competitor to World of Warcraft, and fans consider it would not be a smart move for Blizzard. However, the best competitor is yourself. All those fans leaving World of Warcraft in the past two years, have moved on to new MMOs such as Warhammer Online and Lord of the Ringsʼ Middle Earth. With Diablo going MMORPG, those former World of Warcraft fans would return, and leaving customers of World of Warcraft would remain within Blizzardʼs pockets. Again … the best competitor in the MMO market is yourself. See you at BlizzCon 2007. http://www.starcrafttwo.com/starcraft-2-news/diablo-3-at-blizzcon-2007/
