GC08: EA announces Tennis for 2009

Peter Moore has just announced a new sports title called Tennis, developed by EA Canada.

So thatʼs wonderful.

Nintendo rep: Disaster Day of Crisis still in development

Once a notice was set in place on Nintendo of Japanʼs website, many people had assumed that one of Nintendoʼs most promising titles on Wii, Diasater: Day of Crisis was canned. This was “aided” by the fact that more rumors and speculation were being added to the fire. Those anticipating Disaster: Day of Crisis can finally breath a bit easier, though. A Nintendo representative has confirmed that Disaster is still in development.

No further details regarding the game were provided but you can be rest assured that Disaster is alive and will hopefully release in the near future.

GC 2008: The House of the Dead: Overkill First Look

A shooter Tarantino and Rodriquez would be proud to know they inspired.

There's no question about it: SEGA's upcoming House of the Dead: Overkill has Grindhouse to thank for its inspiration. The game essentially "reboots" the AM1 franchise with a prequel of sorts that takes place in the era of drive-in double-features. Though we didn't play the game at Games Convention in Germany today, it was certainly playable and we got a chance to see the direction this zombie blaster's going on the Wii...

Guitar Hero World Tour Does Miis

You'll be able to play as yourself in the forthcoming Wii version of the game. Find out how it all works.

For once, a multi-console third-party game is set to hit Wii later this year with all of the features of its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 counterparts. Guitar Hero World Tour, developed by Vicarious Visions, boasts the full roster of songs ad play modes, plus a fully functioning online component, not to mention all of the downloadable content that Wii owners can handle. And it's even got an exclusive addition or two up its sleeves.

On Wednesday, publisher Activision revealed from the German Games Convention that Guitar Hero World Tour for Wii will include a Wii-specific "Mii Freestyle" mode that "connects players to the music and adds yet another layer of personalization to the game." Of course, you'll be able to import your favorite Miis into the experience, but there's a little more to the feature than that. If you so desire, Mii Freestyle will make playing music a lttle easier with some helpful guidance, and you'll even be able to use the Wii remote and nuchuk to "air drum." To help explain everything in detail, we chatted with the game's executive producer, David Nathanielsz, who kindly digs into the nitty-gritty details below...

Street Fighter IV “definitely doable” on Wii, says producer

Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono has gone on the record with 1UP and admitted that the game is “definitely doable” on Wii. Moreover, in the same interview, Ono reaffirmed that if there is a strong possibility in terms of satisfying sales, Capcom would be up for bringing Street Fighter IV to the Wii. “Yeah, itʼs definitely true that weʼve had a lot of requests for a port for the Wii. And itʼs definitely doable. We just donʼt have any plans for it yet, thatʼs all. If we feel strongly enough that it would sell, Iʼd imagine weʼd do it.”

Logitech force feedback wheel announced for Wii

force_wheel_wii.jpg

To give you a more realistic driving experience on your Wii, Logitech today announced the Logitech® Speed Force Wireless racing wheel - the first force feedback wheel for the popular gaming platform. Licensed by Nintendo, Logitechʼs newest force feedback wheel works with Electronic Artsʼ Need for Speed Undercover and paves the way for more force feedback racing titles on the Wii console.

“Weʼre excited to team up with Nintendo and Electronic Arts to bring driving realism to the Wii and Need for Speed Undercover,” said Ruben Mookerjee, Logitechʼs director of product marketing for gaming. “Logitech has been at the forefront of force feedback technology for more than a decade, and weʼre confident that our driving platform will be an indispensable part of the racing experience on Wii as more titles that support it become available.”

“As the worldʼs most popular racing franchise, Need for Speed is committed to delivering players superior racing experiences,” said Larry LaPierre, Vice President at Black Box, developer of Need for Speed. “This November, Wii gamers can fully experience the thrill of the chase in Need for Speed Undercover with Logitechʼs force feedback realism.”

Easy to set up and store, the Logitech Speed Force Wireless features a one-piece design that is convenient to use whether youʼre sitting on your couch, arm chair or living room floor. The built-in gas and brake controls are located on the wheel itself and the expandable lap rest is easily adjusted - allowing for comfortable game play without the need to use a table or a desk. Plus, familiar Wii controls make navigating game menus a snap.

To help you minimize clutter, the Logitech Speed Force Wireless eliminates the console cable. With Logitechʼs 2.4 GHz wireless technology, you can enjoy lag-free racing from up to 30 feet away from the console. To start racing, just connect the USB receiver to the Wii console, plug in the wheelʼs power cord, put in Need for Speed: Undercover, adjust the lap rest to a comfortable position and wait for the race to begin. Thereʼs no mounting or assembly involved. And when youʼre ready to put it away, the USB receiver can be stowed in a convenient compartment on the bottom of the wheel.

Samba de Amigo Gets DLC at Launch, Represents First Retail Wii Game with DLC Support

Gearbox's maraca-shaking music game Samba de Amigo will be the first retail Wii release to support downloadable content, publisher Sega confirmed today.

New tracks will arrive in 3-song packs, all performed by the original artist, and pricing has yet to be announced. The first bundle, slated to arrive when the game launches on September 23, will contain the following:

  • Mambo Mambo - Lou Bega
  • I Want Candy - Bow Wow Wow
  • Are you Going to Be My Girl - Jet

Other upcoming Wii games that support paid downloadble content include Vicarious Visions' Guitar Hero World Tour and Harmonix's Rock Band 2.

While Samba is the first retail Wii title to offer DLC, Square Enix's digitally distributed WiiWare effort Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, which hit in the spring, was actually the first game on the Wii to support downloadable content.

Nintendo's Mario Kart Wii offered some online connectivity as well, bringing free track variants to the game, though they were only available temporarily and not permanently stored on the system.

Newell: Valve “Always Interested” in Making a MMO or Wii Game

If Gabe Newell had his way, you might see a Valve MMO–maybe even a Valve made Wii title.

In an interview yesterday, Valveʼs Managing Director spoke on the possibility of seeing a Valve MMO and/or a Wii game developed by Valve.

“Weʼre always interested [in making an MMO], but let me put it this way: I would love to do a Wii game, and how many Wii games have we shipped?”

While the company is interested, Newell said it just comes down to a lack of time.

“Itʼs just a question of having way, way too many ideas for our ability to execute. If people things [sic] are bad now, if we were trying to do a Wii MMO at the same time our schedules would be measurable in centuries,” Newell said.

But at least theyʼre interested, right?

GC 2008: Cursed Mountain First Details

Survival horror is coming from Deep Silver.

With the worry that the Nintendo Wii is going to be relegated to the casual mini-game fan, it's nice to see that there are publishers out there willing to keep things interesting on the system with mature titles and original IPs. Up and coming publisher Deep Silver is approaching both of these categories with a unique survival horror game called Cursed Mountain...
