Ubisoft Confirms Red Steel 2

Suggests Wii MotionPlus will offer precision "missing" in first game.

Ubisoft executive director Alain Corre has confirmed the existence of the long-rumoured, not-very-secret Red Steel 2, with Corre noting the game has been in development "for many months now".

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Corre admitted the original Red Steel - which launched alongside the Wii in 2006 to mixed critical reception - was "a bit rushed", highlighting the "missing" precision of the in-game sabre as one area ripe for improvement.

However, Corre made specific mention of Nintendo's recently announced MotionPlus add-on, noting that Red Steel 2 is "the typical product that will appreciate the new device", with the possibility for 1:1 motion control helping Ubisoft "be even more precise in what we do with the product".

Of course, Corre stopped short of confirming Red Steel 2 as a Wii exclusive, merely hinting that MotionPlus would be a good fit for it's forthcoming follow-up. However, while we wait for official word from Ubisoft's mouth itself, feel free to infer from his comments whatever you see fit.

We should have bet on Wii, admits Riccitiello

Pumping investment into PS3 and 360 was a strategic mistake, says EA CEO

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has admitted that the company put too much focus on PS3 and 360 at the beginning of the current console cycle – and largely ignored the potential of Wii.

However, Speaking to the San Jose Mercury News, Riccitiello said that his company had since become established on Nintendo consoles – and that, for the first time in history, the second and third placed consoles were still ʽmeaningfulʼ.

He said: “One thing that's different is we typically figured out who the market leader was going to be before the start of the cycle and bet with our development resources on that platform.

“We made the wrong call there [by betting on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360], which made this transition harder than it would otherwise be. But now we're catching up, and I think we're fine. We've got some incredibly innovative Wii titles, [and] incredibly innovative DS titles coming. And so I think that issue's sort of behind us.”

He added: “[Whatʼs] unusual in this cycle is there's a second and third place that is meaningful, against which we can build a profitable business. That's a good and positive thing.”

Riccitiello also said he was hopeful of pushing EAʼs market share on DS and Wii up to match its dominance on PS3 and 360.

He commented: “Can I make a big step in that direction this year? Yes. Can I continue to make steps in that pattern? Yes. Does Nintendo want us to do it? Yes. Does the platform set itself up for that to be possible? Yes. So, it requires focus.”

Street Fighter IV: Still a Wii Chance?

In an interview with Siliconera, Street Fighter IV Producer Yoshinori Ono was asked numerous questions, including on about whether or not he has thought about bringing the game to the Wii, along with the other two consoles.

Ono replied "The more people that ask about it, the more likely we are to move in that direction. The very existence of Street Fighter IV was based on people asking about it for so long. If we get a lot of requests it will be something we will think about. It might be difficult to reproduce the graphics exactly as they are, but the gameplay should be completely intact. It's something we can think about."

Siliconera suggested that perhaps a Wii version could follow Mega Man 9's lead, and use sprites instead of the high-res polygon models, to which Ono added "Maybe we can do some kind of collaboration with the HD remix or something. We'll have to think about that one."

Check out the full interview below for more on Capcom's working relationship with DIMPS on the title, as well as the possibility of future Darkstalkers and more.

Nintendo profits up by a third

Nintendo has published financial results for the three months ending June 30th, confirming everyone else in the world is in the wrong business.

Net profits rose to JPY 107.2 billion (USD 99 million), up from JPY 80.3 billion the previous year.

The number of Wii consoles sold worldwide was 5.17 million - bringing lifetime sales up to 29.62 million.

Mario Kart Wii proved popular during the quarter with 6.42 million copies sold, while the figure for Wii Fit was 3.42 million. Total Wii software sales stood at 40.41 million units - up from 24.2 million units last year.

In total 36.59 million DS games were sold, with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness/Time proving most popular.

Nintendo's profits are likely to keep rising as manufacturing issues with the Wii and peripherals such as the Balance Board continue to be resolved. However, other companies are still struggling to meet the demand from Nintendo executives for hats made of diamonds, ruby-encrusted toothbrushes and solid gold helicopters.

EA: More than 40 games on the way for Wii and DS

Speaking in EAʼs first quarter earnings call last night, company boss John Riccitiello confirmed that the firm has more than 40 games in development for Wii and DS.

The exec said that the companyʼs approach with the titles is a combination of “quality over quantity” and to ensure each is designed to take full advantage of each platformʼs unique feature set.

The news comes after Riccitiello said earlier this week that he wished EA had banked more heavily on Wii instead of 360 and PS3.

Cursed Mountain

A new survival horror game built from the ground up for Wii.

On Wednesday, publisher / developer Deep Silver revealed to IGN its new Wii-exclusive survival horror game, Cursed Mountain. The title, set in the late 1980s, follows an experienced climber who sets out to scale a huge mountain in the Himalayas in order to find his recently-lost brother. According to Deep Silver, "As he ascends the mountain, he encounters an ancient curse: the souls of the people who died in that region are stuck in limbo, caught in the Shadow World." Players must content with villagers, pilgrims, mountaineers, Buddhist monks, and evil ghosts and demons as they unravel the mystery of the location. And for what? The climber isn't at all convinced that his missing brother is still alive...

Hands-on Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

Really freakin' creepy.

After months of waiting, Nintendo has finally released Fatal Frame: Masked of the Lunar Eclipse in Japan, and, naturally, we've already got our import copies. Tecmo's Fatal Frame franchise was born on PlayStation 2 as a nightmarishly creepy survival-horror-inspired affair whose main character used not a gun but a camera to point and shoot her ghostly enemies. The mysterious camera obscura, enabling its users to capture spirits onto its film, has become a mainstay of the series, which has seen two sequels on PS2 and Xbox over the years. Tecmo threw fans for a loop in 2007, though, when it announced that it had partnered with Nintendo to make a new Fatal Frame game exclusively for Wii. Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, a joint effort by Tecmo and Grasshopper Manufacture (yes, the same Grasshopper Manufacture headed by No More Heroes creator Suda 51) is the result of that partnership. It's an undertaking that hardcore Wii owners have anticipated since its unveiling. So now that we've finally gone hands-on with the end product, does it live up to the expectations...

First PES 2009 Wii details

Refining the system for Wii

Konami has finally confirmed the Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will be coming to Wii.

Given that the control system in PES 2008 Wii was genuinely astounding, it's no surprise to find that Konami is only refining the system and not giving it an overhaul.

The company promises an enhanced shooting system, better defensive options and AI that responds more intuitively to the player's commands.

Despite these additions, we're told the game will still be as accessible as before, marrying the unique control system with more of the traditional PES style. Hopefully they won't go too far.

PES 2009 will be released for Wii in Spring 2009.

Factor 5 officially developing Kid Icarus for Wii?

For months now, there have been rumors bumbling about that Factor 5 is currently developing Kid Icarus for Wii. There have been a bunch of unconfirmed reports, but nothing official. A recent tidbit in the the latest IGN Nintendo Voicechat podcast, however, seems to confirm that the company is could be truly developing the the title. When asked if he was concerned about Kid Icarus since Factor 5 said their next game would be casual, Matt Casamassina replied with, “That does concern me a little bit…I think weʼve said that, havenʼt we [Factor 5 developing Kid Icarus]? If we havenʼt said it, weʼre saying it now…I mean come on, itʼs no big secret to anybody.”

Doubts about Kid Icarus on the Wii began to perculate last month, when the game was a no-show at Nintendoʼs E3 showing. However, since then, news has been reported that Nintendoʼs policy includes not showing many hardcore titles at E3, and when games are ready to be revealed, fans will see the titles at the appropriate venue.

Personally, I usually donʼt consider most things official until we see press releases, but this is the closest thing weʼve heard about in awhile, and is perhaps the closest thing to a confirmation.

Dead Rising Wii *Might* Get To 100 Zombies At A Time

Dead Rising was an average game made great by throwing, literally, hundreds and hundreds of zombies at you. The upcoming Wii version, being a Wii game, is obviously not going to feature hundreds and hundreds of zombies, putting the whole "makes an average game a great one" thing in serious jeopardy. But how many will it feature? Well, Capcom are hoping that they'll be able to squeeze 100 on there at a time. Still not a patch on the 360 version, but 100 on-screen bad guys for what is ostensibly a last-gen title would still be one hell of a technical achievement!

Spyborgs seeing ʼsignificant overhaulʼ

You wonʼt see new assets for several more months. Weʼre refining it considerably (pretty much as significant an overhaul as Dark Void underwent from its first announcement to its first big reveal). I have seen a new build recently though… itʼs coming along nicely. Thatʼs all Iʼll say about that for now. - Christian Svensson, Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development

Well, thatʼs a pretty interesting development. I wonder what the game will end up looking like once we finally see some new assets. On a side note, Mr. Svensson also confirmed that Spyborgs will have local 2-player co-op.
