Casamassina: No Kid Icarus at E3

Nintendo already showed off one big announcement for their E3 showing today. However, gaming fans are definitely looking forward to the software that the company will present tomorrow. According to Matt Casamassina though, one fan-favorite will be absent at this yearʼs E3: Kid Icarus. Kid Icarus has been hyped up for months now; concept art has (allegedly) been leaked, rumors of the developer have been strong, and indications that the new Wii game would be appearing at E3 have been great. Casamassina noted on the IGN boards, “Uh-oh. Looks like weʼre going to have to wait a little longer than E3 to see the kid fly again. Not too long, though, hopefully.”

Nintendo: “Zelda and Mario teams hard at work on new titles”

Nintendo has just announced that the Mario and Zelda teams are “both hard at work” on new titles.

“They will bring new titles to Wii,” said president Satoru Iwata, speaking in the companyʼs ongoing E3 press conference.

More to follow.

Nintendo announces Wii Music with 50 instruments

At Nintendo's E3 press conference this morning, the company showed off the long-rumored Wii Music. The game uses the Remote and Nunchuk, along with a foot tapping on the Wii Balance Board, to simulate a drum set. The game also lets players blow into the Wii Remote speaker to simulate the play of a saxophone. There will be over 50 insturments in the game, including the piano, violin, guitar and marimba.

"Wii Music is a slightly different play experience than you've seen with other music games," explained Nintendodesigner Shigeru Miyamoto. "Now most music games require you to press buttons with precise timing to symbols on screen, but we've designed Wii Music to allow everyone, inclusing those who can't read music to enjoy the experience of playing music." Instead of following a strict set of notes, Wii music will let players improvise and create their own music using the Wii. The game will record videos of your on-screen play sessions. More to come.

Animal Crossing: City Folk coming to Wii in 2008

At Nintendo's E3 press conference this morning, the company announced Animal Crossing: City Folk, a new game in the series that will have graphics similar to those of the GameCube version. The game will use the Wii Message Board to allow players to send messages to friends and allow players to put on masks to look like their Miis. It will also support a new community microphone option known as WiiSpeak that will allow you to talk directly to other players around the world. More details as we get them.

Wii Sports Resort coming to the Wii, with Motion Plus in tow

Nintendo has announced Wii Sports Resort, a sequel of sorts to the most popular title on the best selling console system this generation. It will include the previously announced Wii Motion Plus controller, and allow players to experience a fun "day at the beach" -- there will be a frisbee game, as well as a jetskiing experience, and a... sword dueling game?

Nintendo plans to replicate the success of Wii Sports and Wii Play, and throw in a new accessory with the pack as well. The game is set for a release in spring of next year.

Nintendo introduces the Wii Speak community microphone

During their announcement of Animal Crossing: City Folk at E3, Nintendo announced a new "community microphone" called WiiSpeak -- from the look of it, it sits on your television right on top of the sensor bar, and Nintendo says it'll let you speak with other players around the world.

Here's hoping they enable other online activity with the microphone as well. Finally, some Mario Kart voice chat? Yes please!

I Am Alive - Announced, Trailer

Ubisoft announced an edgy new survival-adventure intellectual property, I Am Alive where players will be challenged to think, react and take risks that will directly affect themselves and those around them.

When Chicago is left in ruins and the cause of the devastation is unknown, players will be challenged to think, react and take risks that will directly affect themselves and those around them.

"Ubisoft continues to create new experiences for players and I Am Alive will appeal to anyone that enjoys a thrilling journey," said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer, at Ubisoft. "The game will offer a rich palette of emotions while challenging players to make life-changing decisions."

A trailer of the game debuted at Ubisoft's E3 press conference, showcasing the sense of scale and the fearful urgency of emotions which players will experience firsthand in the game.

E3 2008: Miyamoto on Wii's Lacking Storage Space

Is there a solution coming?

Nintendo fans had expected the company to address two Wii hardware related issues at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2008. Some kind of voice-chat solution. Check. And a proper response to gamers who have collectively run out of storage space on their system. That one, not so much. No USB hard drive. No official developer access to retrieve dynamic game data from SD cards. (At least, not for anybody outside of Vicarious Visions, making Guitar Hero: World Tour). And players themselves definitely don't have that kind of access.

But is a solution coming? And if so, when?

"There isn't anything that we can announce today, but we have been thinking along a variety of different lines regarding this matter for some time now," Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN. "So my hope is that sometime in the not too distant future we will be able to discuss some concrete solutions."

Exactly when that answer might arrive, we don't know. But at the very least, we're encouraged to hear that Nintendo hasn't simply chosen to altogether ignore the problem.

E3 2008: Miyamoto Almost Confirms Kid Icarus

He's not the producer, he says, so he can't comment.

In the months leading up to the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2008, sources told IGN that a Wii remake of Kid Icarus was underway and destined to be unveiled at the event. Unfortunately, a day prior to the show, we learned that said project would not be on display after all. So when we met up with Nintendo mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto, we had Kid Icarus on the mind. Our first question was, simply, where is Kid Icarus for Wii?

Miyamoto smiled. "Yeah, I'm not the producer of any Kid Icarus titles," he said coyly. "There are some people who have some different ideas, but since I'm not the producer I can't comment on anything."

When pressed onward, asking him to confirm that Kid Icarus was in development even if he isn't producing it. Miyamoto laughed and reiterated his answer. "I'm not the producer of any Kid Icarus game, so I really can't say anything. Sorry."

IGN continues to believe that Kid Icarus for Wii will be unveiled in the coming months.

Dead Rising on Wii

Nintendo gives Capcom's other zombie game new life.

And the string of old games Capcom is porting to the Wii continues. Dead Rising, the Xbox 360 zombie fest, is being repackaged for the Wii. This follows remakes Resident Evil 4 and Okami. Dead Rising Wii appears to be a direct port of the existing game, not something new (and, mercifully, not a mini-game collection with waggle brain devouring).

For the moment, all we have to go on are these scans from the latest issue of Famitsu, by way of blog Wii @ Everyday. We'll have more info soon.

E3 2008: Miyamoto Says New Zelda for Wii Progressing

Zelda Wii team exploring big and unique ideas.

No big surprise. At E3 2008, Nintendo confirmed (very vaguely) that the Mario and Zelda teams had reassembled, but offered no further details. But when we sat down with Shigeru Miyamoto this week, he elaborated on situation, absolutely confirmed that a new Wii Zelda is underway, and suggested that it will see some fundamental changes.

"The Zelda team in particular always works on Zelda titles. The core members of the Zelda team have for a very long time now been focused on Zelda games, and continue to focus on Zelda games, so they are hard at work and working away," Miyamoto said. "And then, of course, we have the DS Zelda team as well, so even there we're having some switching of people in and out where the DS team is mixing in with the Wii team and working on the Wii version."

At GDC 2007, Eiji Aonuma gave a presentation on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. At that time, he showed a brief snippet of an experimentation the Zelda team conducted -- it was Twilight Princess running in the first-person view. We asked Miyamoto if such a fundamental change could await players of Wii's next Zelda adventure.

"I don't necessarily think it will change that drastically, but I think that Zelda is a franchise that does need some big new unique ideas," he said. "And so the team right now is very focused on trying to find those ideas."

E3 2008: New Galaxy, Pikmin and DS Mario Coming?

Miyamoto drops some not-so-vague hints.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2008, we made it our mission to bombard Nintendo producer Shigeru Miyamoto with nearly unanswerable questions about possible games in development -- because, frankly, that's how we roll. Although he politely explained that he could not announce new products to us, we would not relent and we did come away with a few not-so-vague hints about projects underway. Namely, a new Pikmin title for Wii, a sequel to Mario Galaxy and a DS sequel to New Super Mario Bros.

"There isn't anything that we can announce right now, but I'm sure we'll probably do something with it," Miyamoto said of a Wii Pikmin sequel. "The Pikmin team is, of course, still there and maybe we'll have something to talk about before too long." We like the sound of that.

In regard to a new New Super Mario Bros. for DS, Miyamoto tried to throw us off guard with trickery about not being able to announce unfinished projects. "That team is also working hard," he said. "The thing that's difficult is that, as you know, the way we handle our announcement is we work on product and once the product is at a state where we feel it's ready to show to people, then that's when we're willing to talk about it. Which is why it's difficult for me to talk about different projects in interviews. I have a lot of different teams and those teams are all at different points in their experiments or development, so it's typically once they've finalized something that we're able to talk about it. But for me to go into too much detail would be a little bit irresponsible in an interview. All that I can say is that that team is also working."

When we pressed him for more, Miyamoto added, "Maybe the best thing for you to understand is that all of the leaders of those teams -- of the Mario team, of the Zelda team and of the Pikmin team -- all sit within 150 feet of my desk. The Galaxy team is the only one that's farther away -- they're in Tokyo. But I do have video conferencing with them."

We stunned him with a hard-hitting follow-up: 'We don't really have a question. We just want you to make another Galaxy game.' To this, Miyamoto replied, "Leave it to me."

InvenSense IDG-600 Motion Sensing Solution Showcased in Nintendo's New Wii MotionPlus Accessory

World's Leading Multi-axis MEMS Rate Gyroscope Enhances Performance of Latest "Wii MotionPlus" Accessory

InvenSense Inc., a leading provider of MEMS-based motion sensing solutions for image stabilization, dead reckoning navigation, 3D remote control, and gaming devices, today announced that its IDG-600 multi-axis MEMS rate gyroscope has started shipping in mass production quantities to Nintendo for its Wii MotionPlus accessory. Gesture based interfaces are quickly becoming the standard for many feature-rich consumer electronic products. Utilizing InvenSense's unique motion sensing capabilities, customers of the new generation of Wii MotionPlus controllers will enjoy an immersive gaming experience with motion control never before possible in a video game. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation. In the new Wii Sports Resort product from Nintendo, for example, the ability to throw a disc through the air and control the angle of flight is now possible.

Conventional MEMS gyroscopes, which are the key enabling technology that can sense absolute rotational motion inputs, are typically used in commercial automotive electronic stability control and GPS applications, where their larger size, high power consumption and costs are accommodated. InvenSense has introduced an entirely new class of high performance silicon-based MEMS rate gyroscopes that offers smaller package sizes, lower power consumption, and lower price points suitable for consumer markets. The addition of InvenSense's multi-axis rate gyroscope solution to the Wii MotionPlus accessory allows high precision 3D tracking of rapid gaming gestures.

"The popularity of Wii in large part is based on its popular motion sensing interface and InvenSense's MEMS rate gyroscope represents a truly disruptive technology that possesses inherent manufacturing and high performance advantages that drives the need for a new generation of Wii Remote," said Genyo Takeda, General Manager of Nintendo's Integrated Research and Development Division. "Nintendo selected the IDG-600 for its ability to measure large dynamic motions, high shock resistance, and accuracy for sensing the fast moving arm and hand motions required to support exciting new game titles."

MEMS offers miniaturized sensing solutions to meet the ideal performance, size and cost requirements of consumer applications. A key advantage of MEMS technology, as compared to its quartz and piezo-ceramic counterparts, is its ability to incorporate 3D mechanical features directly into single crystal silicon substrates while easily and cost effectively integrating it with CMOS electronics. InvenSense pioneered its patented manufacturing platform, known as Nasiri-Fabrication, which enabled the company to bring the world's first and smallest integrated multi-axis gyroscopes to consumer products. Using Nasiri-Fabrication allows for the integration of MEMS and CMOS structures at the wafer level with a proprietary bonding technology resulting in several thousand gyroscopes simultaneously produced on a single wafer.

"We are honored to be selected as a strategic supplier by Nintendo, the leader in consumer gaming, and provide them with the solution that met their needs", said Steven Nasiri, founder and CEO of InvenSense. "This accomplishment is credited to our highly innovative team here at InvenSense. We will continue our development efforts to bring about leading edge motion sensing solutions with an even higher level of integration, improved cost and performance, and added functionality to address the huge demand for motion-enabled gesture recognition."

E3 2008: Hands-on Wii Sports Resort

It works. It actually works.

Ever since we first played with the Wii remote and swung a virtual tennis racket or hit a virtual baseball, we threw out terminology like 1:1 control ratios and real-time manipulation. But the Wii remote never quite delivered on the promise it first showed, namely because the built-in accelerometers worked well with big, grandiose movements, but lacked the measuring accuracy to gauge and realistically translate the subtler motions. As a result, you could effortlessly swing your on-screen baseball bat in a big, arching motion, but you couldn't, say, swing a virtual sword with any sense that you had a great detail of accurate control over the action. The good news is that Nintendo is on the threshold of changing all of that once and for all thanks in whole to a little attachment that plugs into the bottom of your Wii remote. It's been coined MotionPlus, but we prefer to think of it as an integral ingredient -- that little something that's been missing from the Wii remote all along...

E3 2008: Hands-on Wii Music

So simple even a baby could do it.

We're sensing a pattern here. The more we go nuts for a game, the less it sells on Wii. The more we question a design, the faster it falls off the shelves.

That may not always be the case – bridge titles like Mario Galaxy clean up, and quality music games like Guitar Hero can dominate on Wii – but it's a pretty strong rule of thumb, which is why despite our pretty negative impression of the "beat you over the head" simple Wii Music, we're sure it'll take off sales wise...

E3 2008: Animal Crossing: City Folk Hands-on

We play the new GCN... er, DS... er, Wii game. Yeah, that's the one.

We had a pretty big feeling that we'd be seeing Animal Crossing on WIi at this E3, but what we didn't know was what exactly it'd end up being, and just how different the franchise would be on Nintendo's new console. Once Nintendo showed first footage during the conference earlier today, we knew we'd be seeing an experience that was pretty similar to the GCN product that has inspired both Wii and DS before it, but it wasn't until we went hands-on that we found out -- for good or for bad -- just how similar Animal Crossing: City Folk really is...
