Deadly Creatures Impressions

I didn't know very much about THQ's Wii-exclusive Deadly Creatures until now, but after seeing a fairly early build of the game at the publisher's Fall and holiday preview event today, I'm looking forward to learning more - and tickled gleefully squeamish, too...

De Blob Impressions

My Kotaku Tower compatriots have taken THQ's upcoming Wii exclusive De Blob for a paint-spattered spin in the past, but after giving it a try today during the publisher's Fall 08 and holiday preview event, I thought I'd add my own impressions of the single-player mode to the mix...

Rumor - Ex LucasArts Employee Says Lightsaber Game For Wii

The supposed source is one of the LucasArts employees that has been left behind.

And your LucasArts titles in the works are...

  • KOTOR 3 (An MMO, and a joint project between Lucasarts and BioWare)
  • Battlefront 3
  • The Official Indiana Jones game
  • Another LEGO game based on the Indy universe
  • A lightsaber game for the wii (sorry, no lightsaber peripherals)

When it comes to KOTOR 3, we can pretty much give up any hope of a Wii version. The same goes for the ʽOfficial Indiana Jonesʼ game. Battlefront 3 is a stretch, but another Lego Indy title is a shoe-in for the Wii. When it comes to a Wii-specific lightsaber title... LucasArts might want to keep that game under-wraps until Star Wars: The Force Unleashed does some business.

Bigben Interactive - 3 New Titles Lined Up

  • Nimrod - amateur hunting game, several locations, and may come with a shotgun Wiimote/Nunchuk shell.
  • Body Coaching - gym classes, dietary advice, training, and more. Will be sold with two dumbbells that will house Wiimotes.
  • Kick Party - utilizes some sort of foot interactivity. Various party games using your feet (soccer, bowling, football).

Nintendo relates Wii storage solution to WiiConnect24?

154577_1_hs.jpg

Reader Dannykeving66 sent yet another email to Nintendo, in the hopes of finding out what the hell is going on with the Wii and storage. The response below is a bit different from what weʼve been hearing in the past.

"Aside from SD Cards, at this time the Wii console does not support external storage devices, such as USB drives or external hard drives. While itʼs possible to transfer a file manually to an external storage device using an SD Card, there is currently no way to save directly or to transfer files directly to such a device from your Wii console. If such functionality is granted via a future system update and WiiConnect24 is activated, we will post it to our website, and might possibly send notice via the Wii Message Board." - Nintendo email reply

Usually, when you send an email to Nintendo, youʼll later receive a generic, unhelpful reply. This response, however, is far from useless. Is Nintendo somehow going to take advantage of WiiConnect24 to send data to devices in the future?

Meet de Blob

New video interview, gameplay clips, story trailer and screens.

THQ is rapidly gearing up for the September launch of its artistic Wii platformer, de Blob -- one of our most anticipated third-party efforts for Nintendo's console. The title, which is being created out of Australia by Blue Tongue, stars players as a gelatinous ball armed with the power to repaint the drab monochrome world he explores. Of course, there's much more to it, but thankfully producer Nick Hagger has answered some of the most commonly asked questions about de Blob below. We've also provided viewers with a video interview complete with a wide assortment of new gameplay clips, a new story trailer, and fresh screens...

Brothers in Arms Wii "done", out this year

"It's going to be coming out at about the same time as Hell's Highway," producer tells CVG

Missing in Action Wii shooter Brothers in Arms: Double Time has finished development and will be out "at about the same time as Hell's Highway", Gearbox producer Stephen Palmer told CVG.

The title disappeared off Ubisoft release lists a while back, but it's finally resurfaced and will be out in August, says Palmer.

"It's been done for a while actually," he told CVG in a recent interview. "We want to release all of these new titles at once."

Double Time is a remake of the story from the first two Brothers In Arms games, taking place through the D-Day invasion and the following days in Normandy across 30 new missions. If it's as good as the Wii Medal of Honor and Call of Duty Wii games, it should be worth looking out for.

Check out the full interview with Palmer, in which he tells us why we should be excited about WWII again.

Nintendo posts new job listing for Wii USB devices

154668_1_hs.jpg

A new job listing has been posted on the job listings pages of the Nintendo of America website. Nintendo wishes to hire a Software/Hardware Tester, but the description highlights the importance of “Creating and executing a test plan for Wiiʼs USB devices.” There are a plethora of possibilities that the job description could be referring to, although the first concept that would come to mind is a hard drive. Perhaps Nintendo is finally beginning to take initiative to solve the storage solution on Wii.

Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party Preview

art_11684_id_1.jpeg

While a select few still yearn the creation of the next Rayman game, the crazy spin off that has been Rayman Raving Rabbids has become a run away hit on the Wii. While it came out on other consoles as well, it seems that the marriage of motion controlled party games and a ridiculously crazy cast of characters was the ideal combination. After a sequel released last year and a huge number of sales worldwide, the Rabbids are back in Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party...

I feel extremely lucky to be able to bring you some of the first hands on impressions of Luc Bernardʼs Eternityʼs Child. The game (which started itʼs life as an XBLA game) is set to release on WiiWare and PC (Via Steam) sometime this year. There was a trailer released a short while ago and some minor story details but most of the game has been a mystery. Allow me to shed some light on some of your questions. Call of Duty 5

Call of Duty: World at War

The subs issue of this monthʼs gamesTM has revealed a wealth of information on the now-announced Call of Duty: World at War, the final name for Treyarchʼs Call of Duty 5.

From VG247 reader evilashchris, reading from the UK mag: “Right, apparently itʼs going to be grittier, as gritty as ANY game out there to quote. The enemy will be scarier and use new tactics.

“There will be co-op for the first time in a Call of Duty. Also there will be vehicles and squad-based elements to the multiplayer. Formats: PC, PS3, 360 and Wii. The Wii version is being worked on by a separate team within Treyarch. [The mag] reckons itʼll be a much closer comparison between the next-gen and Wii versions than any other Wii game on the market.

“Jeez, they have the CoD4 engine running on the Wii apparently. They are using [the CoD4 engine] for all the next-gen ones too. The Wii Zapper will be supported.

“Also, this is how gritty it is: ʽThe opening scene of the first level we are shown is a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat - the blood splatters and dribbles down the side of the tent you are being held in. He turns towards you to deal out the same treatment but help arrives just in time. Cue a daring level-long escape.ʼ”

As is now known, the game will be set in the Pacific theatre of World War II.

What To Expect From A Shrinking E3 In 2008 - Nintendo

191428-2.jpg

Though usually the most secretive first-party publisher, Nintendo has at least set expectations high this year. In March, president Reggie Fils-Aime told GameTrailers: "What we announce during E3 is gonna be fantastic. There's gonna be a big game for the holiday that the gamers (and expanded audience) will want." An expected answer from a man who makes his money selling games, yes, but more specific than either Microsoft or Sony have been, at least with the mention of a singular game.

Some speculate it will either be a surprise Zelda title or the reanimation of a long-forgotten franchise (cough, cough, Kid Icarus). Or perhaps it will be something entirely new. "I've heard strong rumors that Nintendo is going to unveil an all-new game with all-new characters," says senior GamePro editor Sid Shuman. "E3 might make a lot of sense for that announcement, despite its smaller size this year." But most promising is the fact that Nintendo has yet to unveil its fall/winter lineup, something that would obviously make sense to do at E3.

In terms of third-party games, Wii owners may be in for a flood support, that is if Capcom's community specialist is to be believed. "The lack of AAA titles has a lot to do with third-parties simply being caught with their pants down," a company moderator wrote last week. "The good news is... many plans and budgets have been shifted and adjusted, and AAA titles should be in the pipeline for Wii, though not ready to be announced."

Whatever the case, Pachter says they'll be "no new hardware announcements" from Nintendo, given that the Wii and DS are the two top-selling systems in the world currently. And much like they did at E3 2007, we fully expect Nintendo to publicize the raging success of Wii ad nauseum. Wait for it.

The Conduit - Officially Announced

High Voltage Software's The Conduit is a stunning first-person action shooter that promises to provide some of the best visuals seen to date on Nintendo's Wii gaming console.

Using their proprietary Quantum 3 Game Engine technology, the team at High Voltage Software is fusing fast and fluid gameplay with an advanced set of visuals intended to squarely establish the Wii as a true next-generation gaming platform. The first-person shooter boasts a competitive online multiplayer component and a thrilling single-player campaign. Advanced graphical features include dynamic environment mapping, interactive water with real-time reflection, and four-stage texture composition including gloss, diffuse, and bump mapping.

"Too many Wii owners have been told that the Wii is a casual platform with no room for serious games or top-tier graphics," said Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Officer at High Voltage Software. "With The Conduit, we intend to prove that theory wrong by providing gamers with the kind of title they imagined back when the platform was first announced."

Featuring terrifying alien creatures, an advanced Artificial Intelligence System, and a rich, conspiracy-laden story, The Conduit has more than a pretty face. "The Wii has tremendous potential," said Kerry J. Ganofsky, CEO and founder of High Voltage Software. "We've invested heavily in our technology to make certain that potential is realized with The Conduit."

The Conduit's control scheme was carefully designed from the ground up with the Wii in mind, as were each of the weapons in the extensive armory, providing gameplay not possible on other platforms. As Secret Service Agent Ford, you must learn to master each of these weapons as well as the special "All Seeing Eye" device to defeat enemies, solve puzzles, and unravel the game's mysteries.

"Conduit was especially designed for the Nintendo Wii" states Matt Corso, Creative Director at High Voltage Software. "From the weapons to armory and graphics, we tailored everything to the Wii which sets this game play apart from anything else on the market right now."

The Conduit is currently scheduled for Q1 2009 release.

Sam & Max Preview

Freelance police come to Wii

"We started getting all these emails from people begging us to bring Sam & Max to the Wii," explains Telltale's Emily Morganti. "It was a little surprising to see how the rumours came alive on the web that we'd signed a deal with Nintendo.

But it illustrated the fact that there was a really big demand for Sam & Max on the Wii, and we paid attention to that. Plus, if we hadn't done it, I think the fans would have stormed our office."

"Project O" Plotting NA Strategy

The real-time strategy game gets an official English title.

Today publisher Marvelous Entertainment announced it has partnered with XSEED Games to bring the real-time strategy game "Project O" to North America. Along with the partnership news, the companies revealed the game's official North American title: Little King's Story.

The development talent working on the game includes folks from Harvest Moon, Dragon Quest VIII, and Final Fantasy XII. It boasts a pretty unique art style that looks like images from a children's fairytale book.

"Little King's Story is a game we felt very strongly about offering to the United States," remarked Jun Iwasaki, President of XSEED Games.

This Story follows a shy young boy named Corobo who one day finds a mystic crown while strolling in the forest. The crown empowers him with the ability to charm anyone he encounters and make them perform his bidding. He returns to his village a king and must build the tiny community into a vast kingdom.

Marvelous describes Little King's Story as a mix of real-time strategy, adventure gaming, and life-simulations. Players must manage their subjects and get them involved in building an empire. Rival nations must be conquered in order to secure one, unified realm.

For IGN's impressions of Little King's Story, check out our preview from the 2007 Tokyo Game Show.

First hockey game with NHL license on console.

2K Sports announced today that NHL 2K9 will be released on the Wii, representing the first NHL-licensed game to appear on the console.

Users will be able to employ the Wii Remote as a hockey stick within the game, likely in a similar fashion to the skill stick used on 360 and PS3 versions of the game.

"It's our goal this year to bring the fun back to hockey video games," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "NHL 2K9 for Wii includes the full feature set as available on other platforms, and added Wii Remote controls and other exciting features specific for the Wii console will allow dedicated fans the opportunity to fully enjoy and embrace NHL hockey in a brand new experience."

"Nintendo is thrilled to have 2K Sports' NHL 2K9 on the Wii platform this season," said Steve Singer, VP of Licensing at Nintendo of America Inc. "This title has been highly anticipated by our Wii consumers who will now be able to use the Wii Remote to face-off, play hockey, and fire a slap shot in their living rooms."

To celebrate today's announcement, Nintendo's famed mascot, Mario, will strut his stuff down the red carpet tonight at the 2008 NHL Awards beginning at 6:15 p.m. in Toronto. Fans in attendance will be able to meet Mario and even have their picture taken with him.

Stay tuned to IGN for more details on the Wii version of NHL 2K9 as the game's release date draws closer.
