NiGHTS to stand by Wii

Any future NiGHTS games will appear on the Wii, Journey of Dreams director Takashi Iizuka has said.

Speaking to German site G-wie-Gorilla.de, Iizuka said that while it may not have started out life as a Wii game, developing Journey of Dreams for Nintendoʼs machine had been the right choice and that any future NiGHTS games would appear on the Wii.

“When we decided to finally make a sequel to NiGHTS, we didnʼt know which console it would be for,” he recalled. “We only decided later on that we would develop the game for the Wii. But I think it was a good choice – should we make another instalment, we would make it for the Wii.”

While Iizukaʼs comments donʼt exactly rule out seeing the androgynous demon looping and twirling its merry way through Nightopia on the PS3 or 360, we wouldnʼt bet against any future NiGHTS game being Wii exclusives.

At least, thatʼs assuming further games happen – something that we wouldnʼt take for granted, given how Journey of Dreams has met with mixed reactions so far in the US and Japan.

Still, with Journey of Dreams due in Europe within the next few weeks and the Japan-only PS2 port of the Saturn original due later this year, weʼre not giving up hope of a NiGHTS revival just yet.

Full DS download titles for Wii

Nintendo America power-dresser Reggie Fils-Aime has said you will be able to download complete DS games on Wii and transfer them over.

He was chatting to the New York Times (well spotted, Kotaku) about the Everybody's Nintendo channel, which lets you shimmy content between the two consoles like demos, trailers and more.

It is the first time Nintendo has mentioned full games, however, although we can only stab like a murderer at what form they will take: GBA back catalogue or more up-to-date offerings?

For Fils-Aime it is a necessary avenue the platform holder has to explore as it seeks to increase its vast 50-million-plus audience around the world; in Japan users can already access guided tours in museums, and in the US baseball fans in Seattle could access statistics and videos at games using the DS, as well as order oversized food and drink.

"To aggressively drive DS business we need to provide other forms of entertainment to excite the consumer," declared Fils-Aime, probably still reeling after Wii Fit concluded he was a little chubby around the gills at E3.

Currently Nintendo UK has no plans to roll the service out here, which roughly translates to "it will take a while" - probably mid to late 2008, then.

No More Heroes in painful detail

Siliconera has posted some in-depth impressions of the Japanese version of our speculative Game of the Year 2008 (you heard me), No More Heroes. If you're super-sensitive about spoilers, avoid the writeup (because the game is discussed) but if, like us, you are ravenous for any scrap of information about Suda 51's latest poorly-selling avant-garde action game, this is the link for you.

The post covers things we've heard about like the slot-machine powerup system and the coconut-collecting part-time job minigame, but also includes totally exclusive new information. For example, we thought we understood the controls, but there is an element we absolutely knew nothing about: two fighting stances, selected by the angle at which the Wiimote is held. There's also a detailed account of a certain boss fight that we haven't heard about yet.

Welcome to 2008: it's the same year that No More Heroes comes out.

Hudson Wii sports game

Hudson has probably decided it has probably been long enough since Wii Sports arrived to probably offer its own version, probably.

Dubbed Deca Sports, it offers a selection of events all controlled uniquely by waving your arms in funny ways. In Figure Skating (yes it is very popular) you time your jumps and wrist spins properly to impress the judges, for instance, while in in Snowboard Cross you twist your Wiimote to guide your slippery slider down the slopes.

In total there are 10 pursuits to pursue: Beach Volleyball, Snowboard Cross, Badminton, Basketball, Curling, Figure Skating, Archery, Supercross, Soccer and Kart Racing.

"We have seen tremendous growth in the casual sports gaming market in the last few years, and saw an opportunity that would be a perfect fit for the Nintendo Wii," said John Greiner, boss of Hudson, highlighting the reason why many are frustrated with the console.

Unlike Wii Sports you will not be able to use your Mii in the events, judging by the screenshots, although the characters look scarily similar anyway.

Deca Sports is due out this summer. Pop over to our gallery for the first shots.

Konami taking arcade shooter Target: Terror home to Wii

target-terror-sunglasses.png

We know what you're going to say: "But Joystiq, when Sega makes a crappy light-gun Wii port, you tease them about it. Why does Konami catch a break?" We're glad you asked and there's actually two reasons: First, because of the struggling, out-of-work FMV actors who can barely scrape together enough coin to buy the cheap, off-brand whiskey; and second, for the sweet, glorious return of bad guys with sunglasses (and, optionally, ski masks). Both of these remnants of gaming's glory days were seemingly lost, until resuscitated in Eugene Jarvis' recent arcade hit (well, insomuch as we have arcade "hits" nowadays), Target: Terror.

Konami is bringing all the freedom-loving fun home to Wii in Q1 of this year, with "support" for Nintendo's Wii Zapper peripheral (read: the Wiimote still fits in the plastic casing) along with a handful of unlockable mini-games (see: flaming killer golf cart attack mode below). Just remember, each and every copy of Target: Terror you buy helps put food on the table of an FMV thespian and isn't that worth whatever budget price they attach to this thing? We both know the answer to that one.
