Ignorant parents angry at GameStop over Wii rain checks

Uninformed parents looking for Wiis this holiday season are angry at GameStop today after leaving empty-handed when trying purchase a Wii reservation certificate.

Last week, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of Americaʼs president and CEO, held a telephone press conference addressing the Wii shortage. When he announced the Wii rain checks to be sold at GameStop, he initially said that the program would be available December 20 and 21.

Therefore, the Associated Press and news media across the country picked up on the story and reported “December 20 and 21” as the dates to get ready for the rain checks.

However, when GameStop detailed the program Tuesday, they maintained that reservations would only be given out on Friday, December 21.

“We are not sure why or how AP reported the date of the 20th, but it is most definitely one day only,” said GameStop spokesman Chris Olivera.

GameStopʼs clarification was apparently too little, too late for eager customers wanting to get their hands on a Wii. When many showed up at their local GameStop store Thursday morning, they were simply turned down and asked to come back tomorrow.

“They told us that we could get the rain checks today for the Wii I want to get for my son, so we waited outside,” customer Mark Willets said. “Was this some kind of scam to get us into the store?”

Nevertheless, for the full payment of $249.99 plus tax at GameStop stores tomorrow, customers will be guaranteed delivery of a Wii in January. However, only about 20 reservations will be available at each store.

IGN's Hands On Tales of Symphonia

Thirty minutes into the start of the Jump Festa event on Saturday over at the Makuhari Messe just outside Tokyo, lines for the new Tales of Symphonia game reached ninety-minutes, and never looked back. Waiting that long to play a game for a few minutes is usually a drag, but IGN didn't have too many qualms about getting an early first chance at the sequel to one of the GameCube's biggest RPGs.

Bandai Namco had Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatoskr, as the game is titled over in Japan, set up for play in eight kiosks, using a demo that was specially prepared for the Jump Festa event. Following a brief chat amongst main characters Emil and Malta, IGN were asked to explore a dungeon and arrive at a boss within five minutes. Five minutes may seem short for a demo, but the counter thankfully stopped when entering battle.

Nintendo hit by Wii shortage

Shortages of Nintendo's Wii games console are benefiting the Japanese company's rivals Microsoft and Sony in the crucial run-up to Christmas in the US.

Nintendo sought to keep sales going at the end of last week by introducing "rain-check certificates" at GameStop video game stores, guaranteeing delivery to buyers of the sold-out console some time in January.

But retailers have reported that frustrated consumers are in some cases opting to buy Microsoft's Xbox 360 or Sony's PlayStation 3 instead

Amazon sells 17 Wiis per second

AP via CNN Money, December 26 2007 -- Amazon.com said Wednesday its 2007 holiday season was its strongest to date, with Nintendo Wii game systems and the "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" DVD among its top-selling products.

The online retailer said it sold about 17 Nintendo Wiis per second when the product was available. The fifth Harry Potter movie led DVD sales, followed by "Planet Earth: The Complete BBC Series" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."

Other products that sold well included Garmin GPS systems, the Apple MacBook and KitchenAid stand mixers.

Amazon.com's said it experienced its strongest holiday sales on Dec. 10, as customers ordered more than 5.4 million items, or 62.5 items per second. The company shipped products to more than 200 countries, with more than 3.9 million units sent on its peak day.

Updates:

Contributor's Notes: "17" Wiis may not seem like much to some people -- but consider that's 1,020 Wiis per minute or 10,200 Wiis in 10 minutes.

Of course, it's unlikely that Amazon would have thousands of Wiis in stock at one time; so the Wiis were likely sold out in just a few minutes after Amazon had put them up for order.
