E3 2007: Hands-on Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

It plays better than any first-person console game ever... really. And it's one of Wii's best lookers, too.

Δεν ξέρω αν "it plays better than any first-person console game ever" για τα δικά μου γούστα, όμως η χθεσινή παρουσίαση με έψησε. Πιστεύω ότι θα έχει αν μη τι άλλο πολύ ευχάριστο gameplay.

Nintendo Is Star of E3 Show as Rivals Scramble to Catch Up

SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 11 -- For many analysts and fans, Nintendo was something of an afterthought at the video game industry's annual E3 trade show in recent years.

But after a blockbuster launch of its Wii console and its ongoing dominance in the portable game market with its mobile DS handheld game console, the company that brought the world Mario and Zelda is now the company that others are trying to catch.

The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, commonly known as E3, takes place this week in Santa Monica, Calif. The summit, which in the past has had tens-of-thousands of participants, was scaled back this year and is an opportunity for game makers and industry leaders to announce their latest technology and products.

Nintendo's competitors, meanwhile, are playing an expensive round of brinksmanship with each other to win back some of the attention. This week Sony cut the price on its PlayStation 3 console by $100. Microsoft recently announced an expanded warranty program for the Xbox 360 console, which could cost the company more than $1 billion.

Neither Microsoft nor Sony is making money in the game industry, since both are selling their consoles at below cost in their attempt to boost interest. Nintendo, meanwhile, which introduced the $249 Wii six months ago, can barely keep up with demand for the profitable product.

Microsoft and Sony even scaled back their annual parties at the E3 show. In years past, Microsoft held events at such glamorous Los Angeles venues as the Orpheum Theater, the Shrine Auditorium and Grauman's Chinese Theater. This year, its event was at a Santa Monica high school. Sony, which previously held events that featured such concert acts as Macy Gray and Beck, settled for a low-key sushi shindig this year.

Nintendo says it is not paying a lot of attention to Sony or Microsoft.

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, said the bigger question was how to get the non-gamers of the world interested in Nintendo systems.

"There are 24 hours in every day, and only a small time is available for leisure," he said at a news conference Wednesday. "We intend to steal more of that time for video games."

Fils-Aime, as expected, showed off some more Mario and Zelda game titles, the franchises for which Nintendo is most famous. His focus, however, was on how Nintendo products have won fans among senior citizens and women at levels well above the norm in the young-male-dominated industry.

For years, as the video game industry battled for dominance in the living room, the best graphics typically beat the competition. The popularity of the Wii's motion-detecting controllers has changed that notion, popularizing the life-like simulation of games, not their high-end computing aspect.

As a result, game companies are now trying to think of new ways to get players feeling like they are inside the game, designing realistic add-ons.

The Wii balance board, for example, lets players lean one way or another to control their game characters. The board is to be part of Wii Fit, the fitness program that Nintendo has in the works, illustrating that the "Wii workout" craze among those trying to get in shape by swinging fake rackets has only just begun.

Disaster coming along, Project H.A.M.M.E.R. on hold, Smash online not confirmed, and Kirby!

Our very own Lube had a chance to sit down with Beth Llewelyn, and came away with some interesting info. I will have to edit the entire interview over the weekend, but for now we have some quick tidbits.

Disaster: Day of Crisis is still in the works and is “looking very good”

Project H.A.M.M.E.R. has been shelved, but not canceled. No one is working on the game right now.

Smash Bros. Brawl online play can neither be confirmed or denied. Sounds pretty fishy to me!

Kirby has not been abandoned on the Wii. We were told not to forget about Kirby when asked where the Cube version went.

E3 2007: Aonuma and Miyamoto on Next Wii Zelda

Some ideas are being thrown around, but don't expect a sequel anytime soon.

Shigeru Miyamoto elaborated on the likelihood of another Wii Zelda. "It's really hard to say because we've never had a Zelda that's appeared so early in the life cycle of the system, so it's definitely possible that there would be another Zelda on Wii," he said. "Of course, the challenge is that typically a Zelda game is something that takes three years to develop, so we'll just have to wait and see."

E3 2007: Miyamoto on 1:1 Sword Fighting Game

Says Nintendo has ideas; also points to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

"We haven't announced anything, so I can't speak about any particulars, but we do have a lot of ideas about how we could potentially use the Wii remote for something like that," Miyamoto told us.

He also pointed to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games as a project that may potentially include such a feature. "There will be some fencing in Mario & Sonic at the Olympics. I don't know if I'm supposed to say that, so if I'm not, I'm very sorry, SEGA," he said, laughing.

E3 2007: Miyamoto: We Haven't Seen the Last of Pikmin

Nintendo's famous game producer says the Wii remote is well suited to the franchise.

"I certainly don't think we've seen the last of Pikmin," he said. "I definitely would like to do something with them, and I think the Wii interface in particular is very well suited to that franchise."

Of course, he did not divulge any further specifics, but it seems to be a safe bet that we'll see the return of the Pikmin franchise on Wii at some point in the future.

E3 2007: Animal Crossing Update

Hopefully we'll be able to show you something before too long, says Miyamoto.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the famed Nintendo producer talked briefly about progress on the Wii version of Animal Crossing, Here's what he had to say:

"The Animal Crossing team has been very busy working on a variety of different projects. Actually, the Mii Channel was put together by the director of the most recent Animal Crossing game. His name is Mr. Nogami. Recently he said he really wants to get back to work on Animal Crossing again, so hopefully we'll be able to show something to people before too long."

The title was announced previously and is expected to make full use of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

E3 2007: Hands-on Soulcalibur Legends

Now in playable form. And that's exactly what we did. We played.

When you get the controls down the game is indeed quite fun. There are plenty of enemies to attack, and plenty of moves to perform. The boss battle of a sarcophagus opening and closing seemed a little too randomly defeated, but the rest of the game had a lot of strategy in its action.

We played the multiplayer cooperative mode and noticed that the framerate took a significant dip to have the split-screen. Where the single player adventure runs at a smooth as silk 60 frames per second, the two player split-screen mode's been lowered to 30. It's still acceptable and the action flows well in this lowered framerate, but it was definitely a noticeable sacrifice.

We should be getting an even deeper hands on with the game in a few weeks, so we'll update you on the progress when we do.

E3 2007: Jenga Hands-on

It's a Nunchuk and Wiimote controlled game - players simply maneuver the camera with the analog stick on the nunchuk, then use the pointer on the Wii Remote to grab a rod from the stack. The game senses the distance of the remote from the sensor bar in the same way that Elebits does - reach forward, hit the A button to grab a block, and then pull the remote sloooooooowly back towards you to yank the block out of the stack. Or you can push at it from one side of the stack, rotate the camera to the other side, and pull it the rest of the way. Just to be safe, you can toggle on and off a visual mode where you could see where all the weak blocks are in the stack

The second part of the game involves maneuvering the rod along the top of the stack and finding the best place for it that won't cause the tower to topple. This was probably the wonkiest of the game mechanics, as it was difficult to adjust the block into position due to weird camera and controller issues.

e3-2007-jenga-screens-20070712101029679.jpg

It's a game that looks simple because it is simple. The version at the show was very early (possibly pre-alpha) so there were lots of little glitches going on. The framerate's acceptable but hopefully with the amount of things going on they can tweak it further, but since the game's running a physics engine for all the blocks in play, that might eat up processor bandwidth and keep the game from running at the ultra high 60 frames per second rate.

It's a fun and simple concept, and could be good if the development team can manage to get everything together - it definitely needs its control tightened up. But this is E3, and we know that games will be shown way before they're ready for prime time. Watch for more on Atari's Jenga on the Wii and DS as it continues into development.

E3 2007: Hands-on Williams Collection Pinball

Crave goes nostalgic with a fun group of silver ball games.

We checked out a few of the tables in the game at the company's booth during the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Santa Monica. Classic tables like Pinbot and its opening visor, or Whirlwind and its spinning turbines on the playfield, or Black Knight and its classic feel were represented extremely well. Physics was top notch, as was the rendering of the classic table - though I have to say, the texture for the front of the table where the coinslot is? One of the most hideous and low resolution piece of artwork I've ever seen.

To control the action, use the nunchuk in one hand and the Wii remote in the other. Hit any button on the Nunchuk for the left side flipper, and any button on the Wiimote for the right side. The game recognizes motion in both units so you can nudge the table to get the ball bouncing.

Other than that? Fun collection of pinball games from a development team that really knows its tables. They even scanned in the arcade operator pamphlets from each table used back in the day. There are also "Achievements" to unlock after performing specific tasks - when we played Pinbot, we got an "Achievement" for opening up the visor twice.
