Umbrella Chronicles Was Like RE4

Capcom later changed it to an on-rails shooter, the dev says.

The on-rails Wii shooter Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is set to tell the full, sprawling story of the survival horror series, bridging the gaps between RE remake, RE0, RE1, RE2 and RE3. What fans may not realize, however, is that the game was originally set to look and play like Resident Evil 4. Only after Capcom took a look at Nintendo's new hardware did it decide to mix up the formula.

"At the initial stage of development, Umbrella Chronicles' play system was similar to Resident Evil 4's," producer Masachika Kawata told Famitsu in a video interview. "But, it's extremely difficult on Wii. Too complicated to enjoy. Wii users like easiness. Umbrella Chronicles is not only for game enthusiasts. Complex operability can be an obstacle for Wii users. We want players to enjoy the game's horrifying and creepy world and its thrilling shooting action. By reducing enthusiast-only elements, players can purely enjoy the world."

To achieve this goal, Kawata admits that Capcom "… had to compromise to a lower difficulty level."

In addition to taking players through RE remake, RE0, RE1, RE2, and RE3, the game will also chronicle the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation. According to Capcom, all new missions have been designed to tell the tale. "New episodes between RE3 and RE4 are revealed in Umbrella Chronicles," according to the development studio.

Nintendo Announces 2007 Wii Lineup

Smash Bros, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and much more all set for release this year?

Last week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata held a conference to talk about company financials and to outline its plan for the year. At the Japan-hosted event, Iwata noted that the Big N had 45 Wii games and another 79 DS titles in development. Now, through officially released financial documents, we've gained a much deeper understanding of which titles players can look forward to this year - both in Japan and in America.

Nintendo officially states that the following games will be coming out for Wii in Japan in 2007:

  • Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race (DK Jet or DK Bongo Blast, US) - June 28, 2007
  • Wii Health Pack - 2007
  • Disaster: Day of Crisis - 2007
  • Mario Party 8 - 2007
  • Project H.A.M.M.E.R. - 2007
  • Wii Music - 2007
  • Super Mario Galaxy - 2007
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 2007
  • Battalion Wars II - 2007
  • Forever Blue - 2007
  • Mario Strikers Charged - 2007
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 2007
  • Mario and Sonic at the Olympics - 2007

In a word, wow. The list confirms that, at least in Japan, Nintendo is planning to release all of its big Wii guns, including Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, this year. In addition, the list reaffirms that the company is underway with Wii Health Pack and Wii Music, two games destined to follow in the footsteps of the ultra-popular Wii Sports. Wii Health Pack is allegedly an exercise-focused game that rates players' health scores in the same way that Nintendo's brain titles rank brain ages. Meanwhile, Wii Music will very likely include both Wii Orchestra and Wii Drums, as demonstrated or shown at previous events, such as the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

While skeptics may argue that Nintendo carelessly listed all of its major games for 2007 without much thought, or to remain vague, it is important to note that it also made a distinction for two projects. Both Animal Crossing Wii and Hoshi no Kirby (Kirby Adventure) Wii are listed in the same documents as "TBA," or to be announced. Clearly, some separators were set for the official list and Nintendo still chose to define the majority of its Wii projects for the 2007 time frame.

Of the games listed, only four have been officially confirmed to debut this year in America. Mario Party 8 is set for May 29 in the States; Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree for June 11; Pokemon Battle Revolution for June 25; and Mario Strikers Charged for this summer. SEGA has revealed that Mario and Sonic at the Olympics will ship this year, but no specific date has been set. However, readers should remember that titles like Metroid Prime 3 are set for 2007 in Japan and these games have always shipped in America first, suggesting that Corruption is certain to debut in the US before the end of the year. In addition, we have to think that fans would riot if Japan got Smash and Galaxy in 2007 and the Americas did not.

Nintendo has historically shied away from releasing too many major games during a single year and as a result fans have become accustomed to bracing themselves for software delays. Beyond the second quarter, though, this year's Wii release schedule is anybody's guess and there is now real hope that the company could actually debut many of its biggest games before the holiday season.

While PlayStation 3 may not yet be a threat to Wii, Xbox 360 sales are continuing at a steady pace with no visible signs of slowing. The house that Mario built could choose to counter some of Microsoft's kings with aces of its own - Smash, Galaxy and Metroid can certainly compete with titles like Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Too Human. And Nintendo may be able to do this without losing sight of the mainstream crowd, dishing out efforts like Wii Health Pack and Wii Music.

Furthermore, Nintendo's 2007 Wii schedule consists of only 13 titles -- a far cry from the 45 projects the company has in development.

For now, the release schedule is not speculation, but truth - at least overseas. What remains to be seen is whether or not Nintendo will stick to the schedule or delay one or more projects to next year. If it does indeed move ahead as currently planned, 2007 may prove to be one of the biggest years in company history.

In separate, but semi-related news, rumors began to circulate late last week that Nintendo was interested in hiring former Sony head Ken Kutaragi, who, having fathered the PlayStation and its predecessors, is leaving the company. But speaking with the Japanese press, Nintendo's president said that such rumors were unfounded.

Exclusive: EA Playground

The development giant creates a ground-up Wii effort inspired by such titles as Wii Sports. We've got the first details and screens.

Electronic Arts will in the near future officially announce a brand new title for Nintendo's next-generation console. The game, tentatively titled EA Playground, is developed by EA Canada is set for release on both Wii and DS. Each version will take advantage of the unique attributes of the system to deliver players multiplayer-enhanced experiences inspired by such titles as Wii Sports. We recently chatted with EA Playground's executive producer, Dave McCarthy, to learn more. Here's what he had to say:

IGN Wii: What is EA Playground all about?

Dave McCarthy: EA Playground is all about capturing the sheer fun of being a kid. We've designed a dream playground full of interesting characters, cool collectables, and most importantly, a mix of easy to pick up and incredibly fun playground games. There are some classic favorites in there along with some new twists. It's all packaged together in a meaningful single player "campaign" to play your way through the schoolyard. In addition, there's also an approachable and fun multiplayer party experience that will appeal to all ages.

IGN Wii: Can you tell us about some of the games in EA Playground and how they utilize the Wii/NDS control schemes?

Dave McCarthy: When we started designing the game we had a ton of good ideas to choose from. After all, kids are incredibly creative when it comes to having fun in a playground setting. We put together our short list based on fun factor, approachability, multiplayer appeal, and the opportunity for control innovation. The cool thing is that we were left with a mix of games representing a range of genres, so there's always something different to try out in the playground.

On Wii, there's a mix of games that cover frantic actions mapped to gestures (e.g. throwing and dodging in Dodge Ball) and others that take advantage of navigating the entire world (e.g. RC Car Racing). While set in a similar universe, there are game types exclusive to the NDS version that use stylus mechanics (e.g. Bug Hunt) and even microphone input (e.g. Spit Balls). I won't get into all the games and mechanics quite yet, but I think it's safe to say you'll be entertained with the creative approaches our team has taken to playground games.

IGN Wii: What's the multiplayer mode like?

Dave McCarthy: I personally think that multiplayer parties are the ideal way to play EA Playground. Whether you do four-player local parties on the Wii or wireless sessions on the DS, you'll find that all games are multiplayer supported and that frantic simultaneous play is the order of the day. The games are all easy to pick up and play (e.g. remote-only on Wii), along with easy game entry, so it's the ideal game to crowd around with people of all ages. Just pick your games, specify your "rule set," choose a character, and track scores in your party session. You'll also find that as you progress through the single player "campaign" you'll unlock more games, characters, and environments to play with.

IGN Wii: Does EA Playground revolve around a storyline?

Dave McCarthy: Given that we've designed EA Playground for kids of all ages, we wanted to offer a twist to the traditional single-player campaign experience that kids could easily relate to. When I was a kid, I obsessed over my sticker collection and I see that same fascination in my own kids today. So what we've done is populated the game with a wide selection of cool looking stickers you can collect based on playing various games, completing special dare challenges, and exploring areas of the playground world. You can customize the look of your sticker book as you triumph through single and multiplayer games, and show it off to all of your friends.

Nintendo Announces 2007 Wii Lineup

Smash Bros, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and much more all set for release this year?

Μία χαρά νέα αυτά!!! Βέβαια είδα την παρακάτω πρόταση και φοβήθηκα...

Nintendo officially states that the following games will be coming out for Wii in Japan in 2007

One Piece Playtest

We sample the Wii's latest anime title.

At its core, One Piece Unlimited Adventure has all the makings of a quality title. But there's one big problem holding it back: the game was clearly rushed out the door to make a release in time for Japan's Golden Week holiday season. Framerate and loading problems are the big culprits. Particularly notable is the lengthy pause, complete with skipping audio, when switching characters. The framerate problems are also unfortunate, as the game actually might be one of the better-looking Wii titles thanks to its sharp cel-shaded characters. Presentation bonuses like the frequent CG cut-scenes and voice-based dialogue sequences are wasted due to the lack of polish.

It says a lot about the core gameplay that, despite the problems, we're still enjoying the game. If Bandai/Namco can clean things up for the international release, this latest One Piece title has the potential for unlimited success outside of Japan.

Impossible Mission remake will be downloadable on Wii

thumb_impossible_8.jpg

This is quite a strange development. According to the latest issue of Nintendo Power, the Impossible Mission Wii-make will be sold via the Shop Channel instead of at retailers.

This could be the first downloadable game to hit the Wii that isn't a retro port.

Conspiracy's Counter Force

A new E10+-rated Wii title is on the way, according to the ESRB.

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board's official website has added a previously unknown Wii project to its official release list. The game is called Counter Force, it's being published by Conspiracy Entertainment, and it received an E+10 rating from the ESRB due to "violence," according to the website.

The ESRB, which is given access to software prior to its release in order to accurately rate it, has in recent months become notorious for inadvertently lifting the curtain on forthcoming games when it updates its official website's release list.

We placed calls to Conspiracy Entertainment for clarification, but the company did not return our queries in time for publish. Look forward to more on the project as information becomes available.

Mario Strikers Charged IS playable worldwide

Reader Sventiga sent me an email letting me know that European gaming magazine N-Zone has the first review for Mario Strikers Charged. The most interesting part of the article makes a point to clear up a rumor. Sventiga was nice enough to translate the paragraph for us.

"We want to clear up a rumor that is spreading around the internet: It is NOT true that you can only play against European gamers. If you have the Friend Code of a friend registered who is living on another continent you can play against them. The only problem is that you may suffer some lag issues."

Well, that has to be the final say. I would hope a magazine that reviewed the game would have their facts straight. Just to confirm, I have seen the article in question and can confirm it to be real. I have posted a snippet below that shows the final scores they give the game.

Microsoft - The Wiiʼs “video graphics arenʼt very strong”

E: So, is Nintendo disrupting things for you, or were you surprised to see them?

RB: Iʼm actually not—the product has gotten more broad-base acclaim that I would have expected. Itʼs a very nice product, but it actually has a relatively specific audience and a fairly specific appeal, frankly, based on one feature, which is the controller itself.

MARIO STRIKERS REVIEW

Dutch Magazine [N]gamer

Rough Translation:

They tested the full game but the online wasn't ready yet.

"Graphics:

The term gamecube+ suffices. The game looks as good as the Gamecube version, some extra graphic effects.

Sound:

Monotonous, predictable, boring. We heared three different songs in the entire game, mediocre quality. Where are the Mario tunes?

Gameplay:

Wiiremote and nunchuck controls are OK, but so much more was possible? Waggling to do a sliding? Come on!

Long term:

Single player is short, with just a few cups and a few challenges, the lone gamer isn't in for a treat.
