Super Paper Mario Review

2D and 3D come together as platformer and RPG join hands in Nintendo's fun (and nearly unclassifiable) new Mario outing.

CSI: Hard Evidence to the Wii

thumb_usfaldaoky.jpg

Well its another update with my distributor contact and CSI: Hard Evidence is listed down for the Wii. The game will be published by Ubisoft for a September release. The game is based on the television series, is in development by Telltale Games (PC Version at least) and is an adventure title. A press release was issued out last year with a description of the game:

"Hard Evidence will feature forensic reconstructions and atmospheric crime scenes taken directly from the television show, including an all-new garage lab for analyzing large evidence such as cars and boats, improved evidence gathering, review and lab mini-games, and more areas to explore, resulting in longer play experiences."

Reviews: Super Paper Mario(1up edt.)

While Super Paper Mario exudes creativity, it doesn't capitalize on the Wii's paradigm-busting technology all that well. Like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, this game began its life as a GameCube title...and it shows. Nearly all of the Wii Remote functionality here feels inessential and tacked-on, whether it's pointing to uncover hidden doors, jostling the Wii-mote to cure status ailments and use items, or timing a good shake when you stomp foes for extra points. None of these actions detract from the experience, but it's painfully clear that this was a quick-and-dirty transplant job.

Likewise, don't expect much from the visuals -- the art looks crisp and colorful, but occasional bouts of slowdown hamper the fun. Even the most impressive effects, like when Mario & co. balloon into mega-pixelated behemoths, aren't anything that the GameCube couldn't have done. The game also sounds totally predictable, from the peppy old-school Mario remixes to the paucity of "It's-a-me!" voice events. Your dreams of a fully voiced romp in the Mushroom Kingdom will remain just that for the foreseeable future.

So while it's far from the platforming/role-playing godsend that some Nintendo fans expected, Super Paper Mario still qualifies as a must-play for any Wii owner. It's creative, fun, and perhaps most importantly, funny. Quality localizations rarely get the credit they deserve, and the crew at Nintendo of America should be congratulated for penning one of the most laugh-out-loud funny scripts in recent memory. Any avid message-board poster will appreciate the brilliant send-up of their subculture (you're forced to admit that you "complain about games you've never played" in a caustically funny quiz section), and longtime Mario fans will spot numerous in-joke references to long-forgotten series esoterica. The storyline's more serious bits fall flat (the unrequited love story between the game's main villain and your helpful Pixl, Tippi, couldn't be more predictable or contrived), but there's enough humor here to keep any Mario fan hopping until the credits roll.

RE4 Wii Control Chart

Find out how the Wiimote is used for the first Wii Resident Evil

Late last week, we provided a link to Capcom's official (officially creepy, that is!) Resident Evil 4

Wii Edition website. The new site contains first screenshots (thumbnail sized, unfortunately) along with details on what's new for the Wii version.

While we'd already translated most of the information in our first look the game earlier in the week, some readers noticed a cool little control chart at the site showcasing how the game has been adapted for the Wiimote. The only problem is that the chart is in Japanese!

Since we're sure you want to see how the control scheme works for yourself, we've put together a quick translation of the chart right here. Click the below image enlarge.

The tiny screens at the site's special controller page suggest that the Wiimote may lend itself well to some areas of the game. In addition to swinging the Wiimote around to automatically target the nearest enemy with a knife (the "search knife"), the Wiimote looks like it will be used heavily during quick timer action events. One scene requires that you cut a rope by swinging the Wiimote. Another requires that you swing the Wiimote left in order to avoid an incoming zombie attack.

And, of course, the Wiimote should lend itself well to the game's shooting mechanics. Aiming is handled by directly pointing at enemies. To reload, you shake the Wiimote, with the internal speaker responding with a reload sound.

The site has an deactivated link labeled "movie," so we presume a video trailer will be uploaded in the near future. We'll let you know if we see anything!
