Service Pack 1 (SP1) will introduce an entirely new way of doing things with Windows XP. Microsoft, in its efforts to protect its interests, has gotten their feet wet; as a matter of fact, theyre soaking wet from head to toe. Theyre learned their lessons and finally got their diploma from the school of Hard Knocks. This time around, starting with the official release of Service Pack 1 beginning on September 9th, 2002, Microsoft will enforce a change in Windows Update and the methods used to protect its interests. They know about the keygen, they know about what it does and how it works. Theyve been watching the keys used for installing XP (some of them are widely known, such as the FCKGW key used to install the DO Corp. Edition, and many others more to come) and are now prepared to act upon their experience with the piracy of Windows XP. Once SP1 is released, whenever a computer running Windows XP (any edition) contacts Windows Update (WU from now on) that same Product ID and an authentication hash will still be transmitted to Microsoft but Thats just the beginning. Microsoft will now be checking the keys received from Windows Update against their database of officially generated keys. And, just to make matters more interesting, Microsoft will be able to act on invalid keys. Microsofts updated EULA for Windows XP allows them to do this legally (remember: Its their software, not yours). The common consensus at this point is that Microsoft will have a way to disable a Windows XP installation that was completed with an illegally generated key (with the keygen one would assume). I personally dont know what will happen nor have I seen any references to reliable sources of information about what might or what will happen, so even I cant do anything but sit and wait until September 9th. Im sure that what Microsoft has in store for us will be interesting, to say the least. apo do: http://pages.prodigy.net/br0adband/Windows_XP_and_Service_Pack_1.htm <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <small>[ 04-09-2002, 11:18: Το μήνυμα επεξεργάστηκε από: nm2001 ]</small>
Duke Δημοσ. 4 Σεπτεμβρίου 2002 Δημοσ. 4 Σεπτεμβρίου 2002 With XP SP1, in 242 days WU (Windows Update) v5 will come online. When you go to WU with a clock set that far ahead it checks V5 servers instead of V4. As the database is currently empty, it just won't do anything. So, in a nutshell, WU is simply disabled in 242 days because the WU servers have not updated to v5 yet. Nothing to worry about folks.

No, I dont think you would have. Microsoft withheld any possible bugfixes/hotfixes/updates on Windows Update until just a few hours after midnight on October 24th. Why just after midnight? Because a lot of retail stores were planning on putting XP on-sale just after midnight on that day which would technically be October 25th. Got it? Now moving on, Microsoft doesnt support pre-release software (commonly referred to as beta in some ways). But the kicker to this is that there were thousands upon thousands of people already running the final code of Windows XP: they were already using the Devils Own Corporate Edition that was leaked out by someone (Devils Own == Microsoft, havent you people figure this out yet?). J If you had gone to Windows Update before approximately 6:00 AM on October 25th, you wouldnt have found much of anything to download there, barely a hotfix or update in sight. However, several hours later you would have found a whole plethora of bugfixes, drivers, hotfixes and operating system updates. Why? Why then and not earlier? Because Microsoft had not officially released XP yet, thats why. If you understand this simple point, this most basic of concepts, then everything I talk about in this FAQ page will become very clear very quickly. The comment above (from a user at the WinBeta site) about him installing XP + SP1 and then updating is a valid point. The problem is that ITS SEPTEMBER 2, 2002. Its not September 9th, 2002. Microsoft hasnt posted anything related to SP1 on Windows Update yet, not even post-hotfixes that have been discovered in the days since SP1 became Gold (or Final). Nothing is and nothing will be posted until September 9th. Thats the target date for the service pack release; its also the target date for all the new Product Activation features/guidelines will be implemented.
