SEGA Rally to feature Infrastructure multiplayer

rallyboxzm.jpg

Sega is continuing its (questionable) love of PSP with the newly announced SEGA Rally. Like Full Auto 2 before it, the game will be built from scratch for the handheld, instead of being a watered-down port of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. Bugbear Entertainment will be responsible for the PSP duties. An especially exciting feature of the PSP version is its Infrastructure mode, which allows players to compete over the internet against players around the world. From the press release:

"The original SEGA Rally is heralded as one of the all time great video games and this new installment on the PSP is a great example of updating a classic perfectly for today's machines," said Guy Wilday, Studio Director, SEGA Racing Studio. "With the addition of multiplayer Wi-Fi and online multiplayer, there's scope for players to show off their skills against their friends, whilst the excellent PSP screen exudes all the visual qualities expected of SEGA Rally".

Metareview: Crush

crushbox.jpg

It's obvious from our review of Crush, that we think it'll be a worthwhile experience. Does the game press agree with us, or do they think Crush is a bomb? Let's find out!

  • GameSpy (90/100) got certifiably addicted: "With levels that build on each other in terms of complexity (and, thusly, difficulty), the game inspires that kind of 'just one more level' feeling of addiction that may result in you freeing Dan from his insomnia but earning yourself a nasty case in return."
  • 1UP (95/100) loves the originality: "Most games can be described as an amalgam of others, as borrowed game mechanics and thematic elements bounce from game to game within a genre. Crush might have a recognizable aesthetic (think Psychonauts in a dark alley), but it's gameplay is wholly -- and compellingly it's own."
  • EuroGamer (80/100) appreciates the challenge: "There's a genuine sense of achievement and enjoyment when a seemingly impossible level suddenly clicks (or crushes into place, and the confident way the game uses its central conceit as more than just a gimmick is undeniably reassuring and appealing."

If only being correct on game quality was like unhatching an evil plan, we'd laugh maniacally right now. Heck, we'll do it anyway. We were right! MWA HA HA HA HA!

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of June 17

61707.jpg

Every Sunday PSP Fanboy gives you the down low on what's coming out for the PSP worldwide. If a game is listed as coming out in a different country from where you live, don't worry. Your PSP can play games from any region. No UMD movies this week and mostly re-releases for Asian territories, but the US is looking fairly eventful (assuming the listed titeles don't get pushed back). EU is getting Hot PXL, which is like Wario Ware with street cred. Enough blabbering though, onto the list!

Tales of the World to feature 1000 items, 300 quests

omegatales.jpg

Trees in the world of the Tales series always seem to be in peril. The World Tree of Tales of the World is wasting away due to evil deeds of Devourers, demonic creatures from another planet. The World Tree, which created and protected the beautiful land of Terresia, uses the last of its strength to call upon the world's greatest heroes to save it.

Namco Bandai is promising a massive adventure for those that pick up Tales later this summer. There will be over 1000 items to collect, up to 300 quests to conquer, and a total of 19 fan-favorite characters from previous Tales titles. Ad-Hoc connectivity allows players to wirelessly exchange weapons and items with their friends.

We'll have more on Tales of the World in the coming weeks. Until then, check out our massively updated gallery.

Sonic Rivals 2 Races Back to PSP

Game sharing and free play lead enhancements.

Sega of America announced today that Sonic Rivals 2 will hit the PSP this fall. The follow-up to last year's racing/platformer sounds more like an expanded build than a full-fledged sequel, but the intended improvements are numerous.

Jostling between rival racers has been tightened up for closer finishes, an improvement that should factor heavily into the new Battle mode, which utilizes Game Sharing to allow two players to jump into six multiplayer challenges with a single UMD. New power-ups and ranged attacks will increase the ferocity of the rivalries.

On the single-player side, a Free Play mode has been added to let players experience the stages at a slower pace, and several familiar characters (including Tails) will be included, each with its own signature moves. Some 150 new collectible cards will be included in the game, which can unlock new costumes and circuits, as well as backgrounds for the PSP hardware.

Sony Confirms Full PSP CPU Speed

A Sony Computer Entertainment representative has confirmed to Shacknews that developers can now take full advantage of the PSP's CPU following the late May release of the system's version 3.50 firmware. Rumors of the unlocking were initially reported by fansite PSP Updates via an unnamed source.

Previously, developers were only able to run the CPU at 266MHz rather than its full potential clock speed of 333MHz, though most games ran at only 222MHz. High Impact Games' Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, released in February, is said to run at 266MHz. Hackers long ago discovered methods to run the PSP's CPU at full speed, the benefits of which include a smoother framerate for certain games, at the cost of reduced battery life. There is no word yet if this update enables previous PSP releases to run at 333MHz, something hacked PSP firmware has enabled in the past.

It is widely believed that the PSP CPU was underclocked to increase the portable's battery life. Some speculate that the availability of the portable's full CPU speed affirms recent rumors of an upcoming redesign, which supposedly includes a brighter screen, a slimmer profile, and increased battery life. Such a system would be better equipped to deal with the greater power demands of the unthrottled CPU.
