R-Type Tactics revealed in Japanese magazine

rtypeblurscan.jpg

R-Type Final wasn't so final afterall. The latest issue of Famitsu reveals a new iteration to the once-dead R-Type series, and like so many other PSP exclusives, this also features Tactics at the end of its title. Unfortunately, due to the abysmal quality of the image, it's hard to decipher much about the game. For example, how tactical is it? Is Irem involved in any way? We'll try to provide you the details as soon as we get them.

Bringing D&D Tactics to the handheld

dddragon.jpg

If you listened to our new PlayStation Fancast, you would've heard about PSP's upcoming Dungeons and Dragons title. It managed to impress our man at the scene, Kevin Kelly (a big D&D fan). So, what challenges did Kuju Entertainment face when bringing the extensive D&D playset to the handheld? In an interview with IGN, lead designer Lee Brimmicombe-Wood explains:

"It's a big ruleset to try and squeeze onto a handheld with relatively little memory (versus PC or next-gen console). In some cases we had to compromise simply because of the PSP's controls. A PC game, where we could use a mouse, would have been much simpler to make. We're fairly proud of the result, though, and think the implementation of the rules should appeal to die-hard D&D fans, as well as anyone who isn't familiar with the system. The tutorial is a good introduction, and we've made info about feats, spells, etc. easily accessible."

PlayStation Network integrated into next firmware

remoteplayps3.jpg

psnetworksn.jpg

The soon-to-be-released PSP firmware 3.50 is starting the slow process of integrating the PlayStation Network onto the handheld. When using Advanced Remote Play, users will be required to log-in using their PSN ID (pictured, right). Although this is a feature only applicable for those with PS3 systems, its exciting to see the PSN slowly appear on the system. Hopefully, this is a sign that future integration is not too far off: we can't wait to get a PlayStation Store and a single user ID for multiplayer games. The future is looking quite bright.

Game Informer agrees: PSP failure is a myth

pspfailure.jpg

The June issue of Game Informer has a feature about gaming's big questions. One of these is whether or not the PSP is a failure. Unsurprisingly, these claims are reduced to nothing more than simple falsities, spouted by Sony haters. As the Game Informer article smartly states: "How does selling 10 million units equate to failure?" Amongst many reasons listed is the undeniable fact that the PSP is the first serious portable competitor of Nintendo to find success. Before the DS Lite came out, PSP was actually beating DS in sales (according to NPD). To sum it up, no rational, unbiased gamer can list the PSP as a failure.

We all know the PSP is a success, it's just nice to see the often PSP hating press finally agree with us.

Crisis Core almost done, to feature 100 hours of gameplay

dramaticzack.jpg

According to a new interview with the Crisis Core team, the PSP-exclusive prequel to Final Fantasy VII can feature up to 100 hours of gameplay. Tabata, one of the game's producers, admits that the title is about 90% complete, with compressing everything to fit on UMD one of the few remaining tasks for the development team. The game's main story will most likely take players about 30 hours, but "getting all of the materia in the missions and going out into Midgar for Sub-Events" can boost play time to the triple digits.

Crisis Core is certainly not the last project in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The project's end will be determined by the likes of Nomura and Kitase. Fans of the series can expect a "wonderful" special edition, with details to follow soon.

Crush gets a 9.5 score, is this only the beginning?

It'll be interesting to see how the reviews pan out over time but PSP title 'Crush' has been given a highlt repspectable 9.5 score from 1up.com. They seem to love it, if everyone else does too, it could be one of the years biggest critical successes. 1up say: "Quote]Crush is a fantastic addition to the PSP library and is truly an exclusive to be proud of. We hope this is only the beginning for Crush, as Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store would make perfect homes for a title like this. Rarely have we welcomed such a challenge and felt so rewarded every step of the way."

Firmware code hints at video output

tvouticon.jpg

Sony's software developers seem to include hints at upcoming features months in advance. Skype-like VoIP functionality was discovered months ago ... and that feature is only now being unveiled. By looking at some code stored in firmware 3.50, undertaxxx from MaxConsole has unearthed a small reference to "videoout." Could the PSP finally be getting a way of outputting images to a television? From the looks of this hidden icon, it appears so. It's not like Sony hasn't considered this functionality before ...

BT demonstrates its PSP VoIP technology

BBC News has an exclusive video of PSP's upcoming VoIP functionality. In a deal made with BT, PSP users will be able to make free video calls to other PSP owners, and PC users equipped with the appropriate software. The service will initially only work at home and at BT hotspots, but can be expanded in the future.

In the video above, you can see BT's Steve Andrews speaking on the potential of the platform: "What we've done is allow users to talk, see each other, and send messages to each other on something they take for granted, which is a wonderful device that's called the PSP."

Rumor: PSP Slim Details Revealed

Back in March, we brought word of a new and improved PlayStation Portable. But what good are the rumblings of new hardware without some of the details? Today, thanks to several sources close to Sony, we bring you that nitty gritty as the redesigned Playstation Portable nears completion.

Keep in mind this isn't Playstation Portable 2, but rather a redesign of the original, so it will be sporting the same internal hardware. But that's about the only thing that hasn't changed. The new Playstation Portable will have a much slimmer design, thanks mostly to a new LED screen that will deliver an ultra-crisp image but take up far less space. That LED also helps pump up the battery life of this sexy new model, which can last as much as four times longer than the original PSP. While the new PSP still makes use of the UMD drive, it will be a faster version and to help speed up loadtimes and gameplay, the portable will come packed with 8GBs of internal flash memory. Finally, the PSP's much maligned buttons have been revamped and the D-Pad has gotten a major overhaul, giving portable gamers something more like a Playstation 3 D-pad to play with.

The company is still trying to decide whether or not they want to include a built-in camera, as they weigh whether the cost of adding the device will be worth the benefit to gamers. Our money is on no camera because of the competitive price issues. Those of you holding out for a touchscreen are, unfortunately, going to have to wait, though word has it that it will most like make an appearance in Sony's next portable gaming device. While the new PSP will remain black, Sony is still trying to decide whether it will have a glossy or matte finish.

The final price for this new PSP hasn't been set, but Sony is hoping to sell it for under $170 or so. Manufacturing should commence in the upcoming weeks, and the product is going to be officially unveiled at this year's E3. The sale date being tossed around is August, but don't be surprised if it's pushed back to September. What's this reworked PSP called? It doesn't have a name as of yet, but may we suggest "PSP Slim"?

Sony Computer Entertainment of America declined to comment on "rumor or speculation.

The first stage of Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles

It might have sexy, modern 3D graphics, but its gameplay is decidedly old-school. High Score's week-long Castlevania feature goes through the first five levels in the game. Bust out the old whip, and get ready to destroy everything in your sight.
