Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core still looks beautiful

mboxff4.jpg

All this hype about Final Fantasy Dissidius may have distracted you from Square Enix's other big exclusive heading to PSP. Crisis Core, the prequel to Final Fantasy VII, pushes the system to graphical limits many have never dreamed possible on a handheld. New (blurry) screenshots from The Magic Box show off some more of this incredible-looking game; they simply must be seen to be believed.

As the Square Enix party continues to draw near, it's clear that PSP fans will have a deluge of information to sort through. Can you feel that anticipation already dripping down your pants?

New Memory Stick Entertainment Pack installs new movies

Sony is finally upgrading their long-forgotten "Memory Stick Entertainment Packs." These packs come with a bundled DVD that features four movies, pre-encoded for PSP playback. The previous pack came with the choice of cinematic masterpieces, such as The Grudge, S.W.A.T., Hitch, and XXX: State of the Union. Yeah ...

According to IGN, the new MSX-M2GSEP model will feature a different collection of four movies: Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Spider-man 2, Hellboy and S.W.A.T. (again?) While the selection isn't too great, the sheer convenience is certainly appreciated. Unfortunately, the DVD can only be used to unlock one movie, so make sure you choose wisely.

This package will be available at Sony Style stores for about $60. The package will also include a 2GB Memory Stick.

Xbox creator J Allard loses PSP bet, wears dreads

Microsoft VP and Xbox creator, J Allard made a bet with Newsweek'sN'Gai Croal, that the PSP wouldn't be able to match the PS2 numbers when it came to units shipped over a 12-month period. Judging from the screenshot, we can tell who lost. Hey J, do those dreads itch?

The bet originated from playful dinner conversation between Croal and Allard after E3 in 2005. If Sony hadn't managed to ship over 10 million, N'Gai would have had to "J Allard" his head. Yes sir, shaved bald. Although humorous, we're not entirely convinced the punishment is exactly fitting. Why not up the ante and increase the stakes a bit? Now, a more fitting gesture of good faith would be to snap a picture of a purchase order receipt (courtesy of J Allard) for 50 PSP units. An early Christmas gift for every hard worker in J's office. Or for those Halo fans, how about an agreement to instigate talks with the powers-that-be on porting some 1st party software to the PSP? After all, with that with that many units shipped, Microsoft would have a nice, big user base of which to unleash their gaming pleasures upon. Ooh, now we're talking. So how about it J? Any other numbers you want to bet against?

Official Final Fantasy Dissidia site open - coming to PSP!

dissidia.jpg

The official site for Final Fantasy Dissidia has opened today. Tragically, there's very little to it beyond a short flash intro. "Fantasy is endless", it says. You don't say. Twelve "Final" Fantasies so far with a decade more to come? Some might definitely call that endless. Fine by me, I'll take as much as they can give. As the site says, more information will be revealed at the Square Enix Party later this month.

The Dissidia flash itself is a bit bare, despite some pretty character logo art by Nomura Yoshitaka Amano. By checking another part of the Square Enix website (namely the PSP section of the upcoming games list), we can see Dissidia nestled at the top, confirming our suspicions that it will definitely be coming to our favourite handheld. Check it out and see for yourself!

We'll keep you posted as more information becomes available.

[uPDATE] The logo art is by Yoshitaka Amano, not Tetsuya Nomura as originally thought. Nomura will, however, be doing the character art for the game itself.

Sephiroth joins Dissidia and Crisis Core gets a date

sephyflames.jpg

Square Enix news continues to trickle in, as the Square Enix Party finally begins. Two new tidbits from NeoGAF involve the two exclusive Final Fantasy games for our platform: Dissidia and Crisis Core. It appears that Dissidia will also feature Sephiroth, much to the joy of fangirls everywhere.

The perpetually developed Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core also has a concrete release date: September 13th in Japan. PSP fans already have a lot to be excited about -- let's hope that Square continues to announce even more for our favorite handheld.

God of War: Chains of Olympus fully revealed

chainsart.jpg

God of War: Chains of Olympus. You know you want it, and 1UP has the exclusive.preview. There's six pages of beautiful info on quite possibly the most anticipated PSP game of all time.

"A lot of what we're telling with the later stories is Kratos when he's just really realized he's a puppet of the Gods, really realizing that he's getting screwed over, and [the PSP game will] flesh out when he did have maybe a little bit of faith and when that faith started to crumble a little bit -- when he started to see some cracks in the stories they were telling him," says Chains of Olympus creative director Cory Barlog.

We don't want to spoil the rest, so you're going to have to check out 1UP for the rest. Hopefully, we'll see even more of God of War: Chains of Olympus soon enough.

The critics agree: FFVII: Crisis Core is incredible

tmpphpyx27w0.jpg

For most of us, we're stuck simply looking at pictures and videos of Crisis Core, dreaming of how it plays. However, those lucky enough to be in attendance at the Square Enix party in Japan have had the chance to play the game ... and it's good. Let's here a few excerpts from the critics:

IGN can't help but gush at the graphics: "This is the watershed game that genuinely demonstrates just how powerful the PSP is."

1UP seems to love the new real-time battle system: "Combat looks to ultimately be Crisis Core's defining element ... Battles erupt frequently while players are running around the environments, but simple controls make these melees fast and enjoyable. Zack even auto-targets and runs up to his nearest foe, meaning that you can quickly dispatch weaker enemies with little effort."

Finally, Games Radar seems to love the story and how it really does expand greatly upon the original Final Fantasy VII: "We're very impressed with just how good it looks and how well it plays - and we're really excited to dive into a story that seems to have much, much more to do with the core story of FFVII than any of the other spinoffs."

With such glowing praise, the wait for Crisis Core has become physically painful. Who's going to join us in importing the game when it comes out this September

Star Ocean remakes to feature extensive voice work

tmpphp5nxyvl.jpg

The newly unveiled Star Ocean remakes are getting a significant (and chatty) rehaul. According to GameSpot, these remakes will feature significant new content. Producer Yoshinori Yamagishi intends on making "the remake to feel as though they're completely new games." According to the game's voice actors, they haven't been able to record dialog yet, because the scripts aren't finished yet -- tons of new scenarios and characters are being added to the game. For those interested, the Japanese vocal cast has been announced:

Star Ocean: First Departure

Ratix Farrence - Mamoru Miyano

Milly Kiliet - Hitomi Nabatame

Marvel Frozen - Houko Kuwashima

Fear Mell - Megumi Toyoguchi

Star Ocean: Second Evolution

Claude C. Kenni - Daisuke Namikawa

Rena Lanford - Nana Mizuki

Dias Flac - Tomokazu Sugita

Precis F. Neumann - Rie Kugimiya

We can't wait for Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics

dnd-pic2.jpg

We've had our eye on this little title for some time now. If you haven't been following this game's progress, you can take a look at some in-game videos or better yet, an interview we had with senior producer, Lawrence Liberty. Some brand new screens popped out today, so we thought we'd share them with you. The Metal Gear: Acid series seemed to enjoy a rather welcome reception, and we welcomed the slower paced entry of turn-based strategy for the PSP lineup. It's looking like Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics will appeal to a same audience, as well as encompassing any overlapping D&D fans. Look for the title when it ships later, this June.

PSP UK Sales Increase 60 percent

It looks as though the new Sony PSP marketing campaigns are paying off, as the UK see's a upturn in PSP sales. Sony is reporting that since slashing £20 off the PSP's suggested retail price on Friday May 4th, the company has seen a 60 per cent surge in sales for the handheld in its opening weekend.

quote:

Now at £130 for the basic pack (though easily found for £120 at online retailers such as Play.com and Amazon), Sony is confident the new price should see a continued positive effect on the platform's retail performance through the rest of the year as it attracts a wider demographic.

"The price realignment was about passing on manufacturing cost savings to customers. This new price point opens up a new wave of consumers to the PSP experience," said Sony's sales director Andrew Howsen, speaking in the strange language of sales directors to industry publication MCV.

Obviously we'll have to wait and see if that's the case but the timing does seem apt, coinciding with some very strong recent and imminent releases for the platform, such as Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Burnout Dominator, Driver 76 (expect a review soon), and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2' (PSP) - 3 New Screens

MHF2_logo.jpg

Monster Hunter has quickly become one of the most remarkable and successful series for Capcom, with sales in excess of 2.4 million units worldwide. Capcomʼs previously released Monster Hunter Portable was a runaway hit, becoming Japanʼs top selling title for the PSP system, with an attach rate of about one game sold for every five systems in the country. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd has just released in Japan and is already well on its way to surpassing the previous title with remarkable initial shipment numbers.

The non-stop epic hunt-or-be-hunted adventure continues with more content and options than ever before. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 builds on Monster Hunter2 (Dos) for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system (previously released in Japan only) and contains 50% more content than the original Monster Hunter Freedom. In this unique action-adventure game, gamers increase their play skills as they battle through breath-taking environments while defeating bloodthirsty creatures.

"Monster Hunter Freedom's incredible graphics, deep gameplay and addictive multiplayer quests represent the very best that the PSP system has to offer," said Charles Bellfield, vice president, marketing, Capcom Entertainment, Inc. "In Japan, we've seen the Monster Hunter phenomenon take off based on players coming together for face-to-face multiplayer `hunting parties,' which we will foster with our own community here in North America."

Players can face a variety of quests alone, but the true spirit of the game comes from playing with others. Multiplayer cooperative battles for up to four friends via wireless ad hoc mode foster team building and strategy for the ultimate battle of man vs. beast. Players can fully customize their characters, building up their abilities with armour and weaponry as they make their way through hundreds of quests. With the addition of infrastructure functionality, players will now be able to download even more content and quests.

Capcom plans to release this game as Monster Hunter Freedom 2 across North America/Europe in September 2007.

SGD '07: PSP online store planned for Fall 2007

psp-74777465.jpg

The Sony Gamers Day event certainly offered a lot of PSP news, and the long since rumor of an online store was finally brought back into the fold. SCEA president Jack Tretton briefly mentioned the possibility of an online store for the PSP, followed by a quick comment that it should have premiered awhile ago. No other details except he hoped "to have it out there by the fall." We know Sony has the upcoming Station Launcher for movie downloads so it was only a matter of time before their libraries opened up wider to incorporate games as well. No official word on if Station Launcher will also offer games, or if the games division will have a new service altogether. Lets just hope the powers that be are heeding Jack's word and diligently working on making this a reality sooner rather than later. We want not just PS1 reiterations, but PS2 classics as well, so get cracking!

SGD '07: Naruto Ultimate Ninja Heroes

sasukepunch.jpg

The first ever Naruto game to be developed exclusively for US and European markets is Ultimate Ninja Heroes, a new PSP-exclusive fighting game. This brawler will feature 20 characters, all of which can be customized through collectible Parameter Power-Up Points.

Like the manga that inspired the game, players can tackle various missions which will challenge their ninja skills. Being successful can lead your character up the ninja ranks -- ultimately leading them to the ultimate Hokage position. While we wait for this game to be readied for the fall, check out these new screens from Sony Gamers Day.

First Video Footage Of PSP's Jeanne d'Arc

Take a look at some of the first footage shown of the upcoming PSP game, Jeanne d'Arc. The title features beautiful cel-shaded graphics, its storyline based around escaped demons, and its complex turn-based tactical battle system are forming together to become what could potentially be one of the most intriguing PSP games of the year.

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow: new footage

Check out this cutscene from the new installment of Syphon Filer on PSP entitled 'Logan's Shadow'. The film begins the story of the disappearance of Logan's long-term partner Lian Xing. Look out for the in-game footage of sniping from helicopters and the ever-satisfying breaking of the necks of guards.

Have you heard of "Final Fantasy"? It's supposedly a big deal. In fact, it's such a big deal that two all-new Final Fantasy games are coming to the PSP handheld. Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and Final Fantasy Dissidia are amongst the best-looking titles on the system, showcasing the technical prowess of one of the most beloved game publishers.
