panther_512 Δημοσ. 3 Αυγούστου 2006 Μέλος Δημοσ. 3 Αυγούστου 2006 Need for Speed Carbon First Look We get an exclusive peek at the DS version of EA's street racer. Much like the PlayStation Portable version of Carbon, the DS game will offer an original experience that's based on its console cousins. The game's story and the elements of its presentation will be similar to those in the PSP game but will feature DS twists. For example, the story sequences in the game, which play out via animated stills on the PSP, will be just stills on the DS, but the DS will offer touch-screen support. The single-player game will follow the same basic path as the PSP game but with a more traditional NFS approach. You'll choose from one of 15 cars and enter a variety of different races that will be spread out over 12 tracks. The crew mechanic is being modified so that the DS game will have only two types of wingmen, the drafter and the attacker. The drafter will work exactly the way he does in the PSP game. When you call on this crew member in-game, he'll drive out in front of you and let you follow in his wake and build up a speed boost. The attacker will take out any opponent you've targeted. Besides the single-player game, Need for Speed Carbon will offer multiplayer modes over Wi-Fi for up to four players. Better still is the game's support for single-cart play, allowing you to download a track to a friend's DS. One of the big DS-specific features for the game is the customizable dashboard feature. You'll be able to choose variations on three different styles to customize the dashboard on the DS's touch screen. Each dashboard features a different look for its instrumentation, such as digital and analog displays. The dashboards are also functional, allowing you to trigger your nitrous or call in a crew member. You'll also be able to look behind you by tapping the right or left car-mirror icons on the dash. The visuals in the game are coming together nicely on the DS. The work-in-progress game looked good and was moving along at a speedy clip. The car models and detail weren't as sharp as in the PSP game, but they definitely looked impressive in their own right. The game's frame rate, though not consistent yet, was very smooth. The early tracks we saw showed off a respectable amount of detail and special effects, such as lighting and filters to highlight the speed boost from your nitrous. Though the game doesn't let you go off and explore a city, the variety in the tracks helps keep them from being monotonous. The audio in the version we played hit all the right notes. The engine noise from the cars sounded beefy, and the squeal of the tires around sharp turns and drifts was similarly impressive. The game's soundtrack will include 10 licensed music tracks that show off the DS's often-underappreciated audio muscle. Based on this early look, Need for Speed Carbon has the potential to be a cool addition to the DS's racing lineup. The game looks good and plays well already. The streamlined approach to its racing should suit the DS nicely. The system-specific features, such as the custom dashboards and especially the Wi-Fi multiplayer, are nice touches that don't feel as tacked on as the DS features in other games. Look for more on Need for Speed Carbon in the months to come. The game is slated to ship this fall.
panther_512 Δημοσ. 3 Αυγούστου 2006 Μέλος Δημοσ. 3 Αυγούστου 2006 Spectrobes Hands-On The anime-inspired action RPG for the DS utilises the console's different functions and combines them into an interesting finished product. Spectrobes for the Nintendo DS is an interesting blend of quirky sci-fi real-time action with role-playing elements. You play as an Interplanetary Patrol Officer who finds an old man who has crashed on one of the planets in your solar system. It emerges that his solar system was destroyed by dark energy creatures called the Krawl, and they're now invading your system. The only way to defeat them is to excavate and reawaken ancient creatures that are buried deep underground, called Spectrobes. To help you in your quest, the old man gives you a baby Spectrobe to begin with, which has the ability to sense where other Spectrobes are buried. The game is really split into two halves--the RPG-style character development of your Spectrobes and the real-time battle section where you progress the game. In the hands-on we had with the game, we played through a bit of both, starting with the excavation minigame. The aim in this section is to scrub away the earth around a buried fossil using the stylus. You'll need to be careful though, since if you rub too vigorously, you'll damage the fossil. Once you've gotten through the debris, though, you can blow away the rubble and pick up your Spectrobe. The next step is to take the fossil back to the lab and reawaken it. This is another minigame and involves making a certain level of noise, with the tone and pitch of that noise playing a part in deciding what kind of Spectrobe you will get once the process is complete. After that, you'll need to nurture your newly awakened creature and feed it minerals, which will determine the strengths of your Spectrobe. At the same time, if you have a second creature in the pen, they will begin to develop a bond--an important aspect, since when you fight the battles, you'll need a pair of Spectrobes, not just one. Once your pair has become adults, it's time to head out into the wild and start fighting. The lion's share of the combat to begin with will be taken on by your Spectrobes, since they're more powerful than you, though you'll be able to collect increasingly powerful weapons as you progress through the game to make more of an impact. At the end of each battle, your Spectrobes will gain additional hit points, and with more experience, will later evolve further, from adults to even more powerful Spectrobes. There are a number of key battles along the way, as well as a big finale for which you'll need to have developed some serious creatures. The game is set across seven worlds and is still in development, so there's no release date set at this point. We'll bring you more as we get it.

panther_512 Δημοσ. 4 Αυγούστου 2006 Μέλος Δημοσ. 4 Αυγούστου 2006 Chocobo Set For DS Slime has company. Slime is no longer the only Square Enix mascot on the DS. Square Enix has announced plans to bring one of its Final Fantasy mascot characters to the platform for an all new, original title called Chocobo and the Magic Picture Book (Chocobo to Mahou no Ehon in Japanese). Final Fantasy's Chocobo characters are the stars of this mysterious new title. The game focuses on a Chocobo who lives on a Chocobo Farm, and his care taker, Shiroma. Shiroma serves as the navigator through your adventure, which will reportedly feature cameos from other Final Fantasy characters. The game kicks off when Kuroma, FF's black sorcerer character, arrives on the farm with a mysterious picture book. Chocobo and Shiroma head into the picture book world to save their friends and stop the sinister plans of a villain. Based on the few screenshots that have been released through the Japanese media, this latest Square Enix title appears to use a 3D engine for its visuals. This seems to be somewhat of a trend for games out of the publisher (see Mario Basket 3on3 and Final Fantasy III). Much of Chocobo and the Magic Picture Book is still in the dark, but with a Japanese release set for the winter, expect more details to come our way shortly. The game has yet to be announced for stateside release.

Daredevil Δημοσ. 7 Αυγούστου 2006 Δημοσ. 7 Αυγούστου 2006 Is The DS Lite Too Hard To Handle For Manly Hands? One gamer has expressed reservations of ability to handle the DS Lite as it's just too small for his manly hands. He has found himself returning to the phat DS because the lite has a tendancy to dig into his hands. http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/dslitedig.jpg This doesnʼt happen on DS Fat however as its bigger dimensions mean the contact area is further down your palm, on the more fleshy part of your inner thumb.Another contributing factor are the flat sides of the DS Lite. The DS Fat, in contrast, has concave edges which spreads the contact over a wider area of your hand. The DS Liteʼs top edge does the opposite.Of course, such ergonomic problems are nothing new in the games business. Microsoftʼs original Xbox controller was a wash out despite undergoing thousands of hours of user testing. The problem was it was only tested on large North American hands, not the more petite Asian versions. The DS Lite seems to be a case of such geographic myopia in reverse. Read More: PocketGamer.co.uk
