How to install another OS on your PS3

other_os_qjpreviewth.jpg

It only takes four easy steps to install another system software on the hard disk of your PS3. Yeah, you heard us right! Not only can you swap 2.5" SATA HDD, you can change the operating system (OS) software. Of course, you need compatible third-party software: but we're still waiting for more details on that (http://www.playstation.com just says "details will be posted soon").

But, just so you know, here's how you'd do it:

Do not turn off the PS3 system or remove the disc or storage media during installation. Doing so may cause damage to the system software.

During installation, the power button on the system front is inactive. [We're guessing this means: In other words, don't panic, and don't get confused. Your system is on and busy - don't turn it off!!!!!]

1.Insert the disc or storage media that contains the installer in the system.

2.Select (System Settings) under (Settings) in the home menu.

3.Select [install Other OS]. The system searches for the installer. When the installer is found, its content and location will be displayed.

4.Check the content of the installer, and then select [OK]. The installer starts. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the operation.

Sony even offers hints. Wow! It's like they want us to try different OS! They keep showing how gamer-centric they are.

To start the newly installed system software, go to (Settings) > (System Settings) > [Default System], and then select [Other OS] to restart the system.

An appropriate USB adaptor (not included) is required to use storage media with some models.

Now go and spread the word. Not only can its firmware support homebrew, its OS can be changed. Wow. The PS3 is looking better every passing news day.

PS3 Sells out, Sony expects to ship 100k units per week

TOKYO—For the hearty souls willing to brave the chill of a November night in Tokyo, it didn't take more than a few minutes past midnight to know if a PlayStation 3 would be theirs--those lucky gamers were handed a numbered ticket which guaranteed them a unit. Then, it was just a matter of waiting out the hours until the stores of Shinjuku and Akihabara opened their shutters.

But for the general masses that woke up at more reasonable hours Saturday, the best they could do was to secure a raffle ticket and hope that lady luck was on their side when they returned to the store when the raffle was being held.

Counting down the hours.

While there may have been enough PS3s for the hardcore gamers who wanted them badly, there was no denying that Sony's Japan allocation way too slim to match the demand.

As the countdown to the PlayStation 3 launch in Japan ticked down to its last minutes, GameSpot editors headed to Shinjuku's Yodobashi Camera, where SCEI president Ken Kutaragi made an appearance during the PSP launch back in 2004.

SCE head of worldwide studios Phil Harrison was spotted for a short moment just before the scheduled launch time, at 7AM, but most eyes were peeled for Kutaragi, who was expected to show up and reprise his leading the PSP launch in '04.

Kutaragi did eventually appear at the store as we had expected, but unfortunately, it was well over an hour after the opening hour and drama of the launch activities. He had picked the Bic Camera main branch outlet in Yurakucho to hand out the first console--to a young eager customer from China we were told.

At Shinjuku's Yodobashi camera, the first person on line was a 22-year-old student who had been waiting in line since 6pm on Friday. While he looked tired and worn from the long wait, he shined a grin as he walked away with PS3 and Mobile Suit Gundam game.

Similar scenes were taking place in other locations throughout Tokyo, most selling PS3s without preorders or raffle tickets. The Ikebukuro Bic Camera had over 1,200 customers with numbered tickets, while the Shibuya Tsutaya, the official launch location for Microsoft's Xbox and Xbox 360, had about 300 units to sell.

For others, the rain continues--as does the wait.

While hardcore gamers returned home happily with their PS3, it was another story with the general public who weren't aware that the PS3 would be supplied in only limited numbers.

From around 8am on, we saw dozens of people approaching stores only to see Sold Out signs in front. It was pretty apparent what was going to happen next.

To see how things were going at stores giving away the raffle tickets, we went to the Shinjuku Bic Camera to see if there was a line. To our surprise, over 400 people had formed a line by around 9am--when the store was scheduled to hand out raffle tickets. But soon, a staffer came out and held up a Sold Out sign at the end of the line, telling the unlucky stragglers they no chance at all at buying a unit.

PS3s are SOLD OUT.

A similar scene was happening at Sakuraya, which only had about 20 units each of the 20GB and 60GB models. There was still a line of about 200 people even after the scheduled closing time of the raffle ticket distribution.

In Akihabara, Sofmap's main branch had about 300 people lined up to get raffle tickets, with everyone holding umbrellas to cope with the heavy rain. Similar to the line at Shinjuku Bic Camera, a staffer eventually came up and held up a Sold Out sign, turning away any additional people trying to line up after 9:30am when the store was to hand out its tickets.

Raffle ticket holders match their number against the model.

Generally, those waiting in line to get raffle tickets were a very different group from the customers who waited overnight. The crowds we saw in the overnight lines consisted of hardcore gamers, foreigners, and homeless people hired by scalpers. They were mostly male, and many of them wore heavy clothing to survive the cold, additionally prepared with portable chairs and handheld gaming machines.

On the other hand, the lines that formed at raffle locations this morning consisted of more casually dressed people with a good number of female customers, parents with children, and a few elderly folks lining up to buy a PS3 for their grandchildren perhaps.

Sony seemed to have anticipated there might not be enough PS3s for the casual consumers at launch, which would explain why the company seemed to have been holding back on its mass market ad campaign. While Sony had posted numerous billboards at train stations and had run a flight of TV ads in prime time, the company didn't begin its push until just a week ago. In comparison, Nintendo has been running Wii ads on TV for nearly a month, even through the console isn't due until December.

Given the high demand of the PS3, the console is already selling at inflated prices on auction sites. The 60GB model, which sold for an average price of 59,800 yen ($508) at retailers is selling now for around 90,000 yen ($765) on Yahoo Japan's Auction site. The 20GB model, which retails for 49,980 yen ($425), is going for 70,000 yen ($595).

Sony expects to ship 100 thousand units every week after today's launch, which should give it total sales of about 400,000 units by the time the Wii is released in December. Coincidently, Nintendo expects 400,000 units to be available Day 1 of its launch in Japan.

Then the console race in Japan begins in earnest

P.S.3. Pote th ginei rename to thread, se "The Official PS3 Trolling Thread"?

Απ' τη στιγμή που η μεγάλη μάζα των trolls απομακρύνθηκε, γιατί να γίνει μετονομασία; Δεν έγινε τότε, θα γίνει τώρα;

αυτα, last year.....

Oh yeah SLOWDOWN!

Because of the way the GP races work, you will see slowdown happen quite a bit now - 8 cars all grouped close to each other, let off a nitrous and the frames just drop :(

Yeah I forgot about the slowdown on RR7. **** Bandai Namco!

Seriously I popped the ol RR6 and I was just bowled by how smooth everything was.

Exclusive: PlayStation 3's RSX is 240mm² and bigger than the PC equivalent

Based on the RSX die shots released by websites following the PlayStation 3's launch in Japan yesterday, we have successfully estimated the chip's die size by comparing it to the nearby Samsung GDDR3 memory chips. The result is approximately 240mm² and, even with the imperfect precision of our measurement method, we can safely claim it's between 230 and 245mm². That makes RSX roughly the same size as the CELL revision used in the PS3, which is known to measure 235mm², and it's a fair bit bigger than NVIDIA's PC equivalent to the RSX: the 90nm NVIDIA G71, which has a die size of 196mm². While TSMC's 90nm transistor density might be slightly different from that of Sony's fabs, it is unlikely to be a major factor here. The chip is also rumoured to run at 500MHz internally.

Based on our analysis and information, it seems that the RSX has 28 pixel shaders internally, with 24 active. G71, on the other hand, has only 24 and NVIDIA sells the defective parts as the 20 pixel shader GeForce 7900 GS. Such an opportunity for multiple SKUs based on the same die does not exist with consoles, and therefore higher redundancy is desirable. It's also likely that other parts of the RSX are therefore disabled for yeilding, such as the vertex shaders and possibly the raster operations units (ROPs). This is similar to the strategy used by Sony with the CELL, where 1 of the 8 SPEs is disabled.

While the RSX might have some parts removed compared to the G71, such as its PureVideo technology, transistor count is likely balanced back by having more redundancy and larger caches: indeed, we believe that most of the RSX's internal caches are larger compared to any G7x part, including the post-vertex transform cache and compression caches. In addition to its normal 48KiB of texture cache to its local memory, it also has an extra 96KiB of cache dedicated to communication with the XDR memory pool, in order to improve bandwidth utilization and average latency, and make it possible to use that memory pool for texturing operations - resulting in greater overall system bandwidth utilization.

Xbox 360's Xenos, on the other hand, is a 180mm² chip (plus the daughter die, with the eDRAM and ROPs) and does not seem to have this level of redundant parts disabled for yield reasons. Instead of coarse-grained yield management (entire functional blocks duplicated), it is rumoured to be duplicating smaller elements in each block (likely 17 shader ALUs per 16 required working - some patents, including this one, hint at this), in order to minimize the chip's die size while keeping yields in check. Both approaches are perfectly acceptable and industry standard nowadays.

Based on all of this information, RSX does not seem significantly more expensive to produce than Xenos, especially so when counting Xenos' daughter die, which is estimated at more than 70mm². It should be taken into consideration, however, that the PlayStation 3's memory costs are most likely higher than the Xbox 360's, and that the lack of eDRAM on the RSX is a contributing factor to this difference, as this requires the system to have higher overall memory bandwidth.

The memory chips being "nearer" to the graphics core, as visible on the die shots that can be found on the web, will however not give any performance advantage, and while it may increase costs very slightly, it will help for spreading the memory's heat. It should finally be noted that while the GDDR3 chips people have found next to RSX are rated at 1400MHz effective (700MHz internally), they will apparently only run at 1300MHz effective. This has most likely been done in order to also be able to use chips rated at 1333MHz effective by Samsung and possibly other manufacturers, a step which Sony might have deemed necessary to meet its long-term production goals and lifetime cost reductions.

MotorStorm, Lair, HS in 2007

A pamphlet included in the US retail PlayStation 3 hardware bundle has shed some light on the release dates for a few of the next-gen system's upcoming exclusives.

According to IGN, the pamphlet reveals that despite MotorStorm enjoying a December release in Japan, where the PS3 goes on sale today, it won't be released in the US until February.

Meanwhile, Factor 5's dragon-'em-up Lair (which smacks a bit of Dynasty Warriors in our early build) is down as March, along with Heavenly Sword from UK-based Ninja Theory.

The good news, we suppose, being that those games could all wind up as European launch titles - if they stick to the proposed dates. Ha.
