Sony experience PS3 Production Snag - May not meet estimated Shipments

Bloomberg today report Sony may fail to meet its shipment targets due to a shortage of components with regards to the Blu-ray drive. Jack Tretton was quoted as saying the estimates are more of a 'target' and clearly Sony have had issues.

Sony Corp., which slashed its profit forecast yesterday, said it may not reach this year's shipment target for the PlayStation 3 game console because of a parts shortage in the Blu-ray high-definition disc drive.

Sony plans to ship two million PlayStation 3 players this year to the U.S. and Japan, and six million worldwide by March. The Tokyo-based company said yesterday annual profit would fall 39 percent to its lowest in five years on price cuts of the console in Japan and a recall of 9.6 million computer batteries.

``The honest answer is it's more of a target'' for PlayStation 3 shipments, Jack Tretton, co-chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said yesterday in an interview. ``Clearly we've had production issues.''

Lik-Sang hits back at Sony following court judgement

Retailer threatened with further legal action over PlayStation 3 imports

Lik-Sang has hit back at Sony after a judge ruled that the online retailer had breached copyright laws by importing Japanese PSP units into Europe.

Marketing manager Pascal Clarysse commented, "Fighting multiple lawsuits in different countries at the same time and paying high premiums to expensive lawyers is an overwhelming situation for a small company like Lik-Sang.

"Launching separate court actions with separate claims and different judges is completely unnecessary, except for the fact that it helps reaching one single target: outspend Lik-Sang to death."

Clarysse went on to refute Sony's assertions that the sale of import PSPs is having an impact on its business, stating, "Contrary to their claim, I don't believe they are suffering 'losses and damages' through Lik-Sang's activity".

Earlier this week, Judge Michael Fysh ruled against Hong Kong-based Lik-Sang in a case brought by Sony to the High Court.

In his ruling Judge Fysh said, "The acts of which the complaint is made have, in my view, been perpetrated not in Hong Kong but here in the EEA, and without Sony's consent."

But according to an official statement issued by Lik-Sang, "Hong Kong's laws are clear when it comes to parallel trade, and the company has no ties whatsoever with the UK."

The statement also claims that Sony intends to obtain a UK injunction against Lik-Sang to prevent the company selling products to consumers in the EEA, and that the platform holder has "threatened to initiate yet another lawsuit to prevent the sales of PlayStation 3 consoles to Europe".

"How this decision will affect Lik-Sang's business is not entirely known at this time," the statement concludes.

"The retailer is currently exploring its legal options and analysing the consequences of this ruling."

No 'Achievements' System for PS3 Games

But some games will sort of have it. Kind of.

Earlier this year, rumors said Sony would copy Xbox 360's achievements system for PlayStation 3 with something called "Entitlements" but the concept never materialized. Even now, as Sony releases the last details on the hardware launch, we've heard nothing.

Chris Kohler at Game|Life played it straight with Sony, confirming they're only sort of interested in an achievements system.

"We didn't mention that, but it is our intention that we would have it -- although I think it would be game-centric. It's very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples' success on Madden," said Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment America exec VP. "So the publisher will have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis."

Essentially, we shouldn't be surprised to see cross-platform games with achievements have something in the PS3 versions, but there will not be a cumulative "gamerscore" totaling points across all games. Tretton did add, however, that Sony plans on incorporating this achievements-like system into their first-party releases, though none of the launch games feature it.

MS to Sue Sony over Misleading Price Comparison?

According to Engadget, Microsoft are planning legal action against Sony following a misleading price comaprison chart released yesterday. The chart priced a 'complete' core 360 bundle at $698 against a 20GB PS3 which claimed to have all that was on offer and more for a mere $499.

We hear Microsoft ain't too happy about this chart either and is preparing certain legal action, namely because it could be misleading to otherwise unwitting retail employees selling customers game consoles this holiday season. Go figure.

PS3's Genji uses HDD to quarter load times

An unexpected feature in Genji is to install the game, committing 4GB of data from the game's Blu-ray disc to the PS3's hard drive -- a three-minute one-time-only procedure available from the game's start menu that a Sony rep said cuts down in-game load times from about 15 seconds to four seconds.

...well, they said it isn't a game console...

Resistance Fall of Man has been downgraded from the promised 1080p to 720p.Β Β The 1080p screenshots are now just depressing.Β This news was released at the Gamer’s Day conference.Β The official word from Insomniac was:Β

“Native 1080p (versus 720p scaled to 1080p) uses much more VRAM than 720p. When we finished up a few of our bigger levels at the very end of the development process we realized that we would have had to steal VRAM from some of our characters and environments to run in native 1080p. Anyway, we felt it was best to stay at 720p and that, at least while 1080p televisions are still relatively scarce, we should focus on implementing 1080p for our future games.” - Ted Price

XBL's Greenberg calls PS3 online a 'knockoff'

dot_clear.gif

The group manager of Xbox 360's live service has trashed Sony's PS3 online service, slyly remarking it's a 'knockoff' of the reputable Xbox Live service. He also notes that there are a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to Sony's service and questions if they have any killer online apps such as Halo 3 and Gears of War.

GameSpot: What are your impressions of Sony's online initiative? What do you think it offers that Xbox Live doesn't, and vice versa?

Aaron Greenberg:
We welcomed the same approach from Sony four years ago. We're proud that we've created a smash hit service that has prevailed over four years by growing to 4 million members during that time.
And we're flattered that we've created a service that is breeding yet another knockoff. That said, it's still hard to comment in much depth around their online announcement since t
here are still a lot of details that haven't been made clear and there are a lot of unanswered questions. Is this a fully connected service with one identity across your entire gameplay experience? Is every game online with voice chat integration? Do they have Achievements and Gamerscore? How are they handling safety, security, hacking, viruses, and parental controls? While competition is always great, we feel confident in our leadership position in online, especially given our four-year and 4-million-member head start.

GS: With Sony's online service being free and apparently offering nearly everything that Xbox Live offers, how will Microsoft justify continuing to charge gamers for online play?

AG: They offered basic free matchmaking on the PS2, and from what we can tell, their online story has not evolved much.
Do they offer the ability to build your reputation across the network?
Can you accumulate achievements and gamerscore?
Do they have voice in every game?
W
hat about cross-game invites and communication?
Is every game online enabled?
Heck, do they have exclusive titles that can compete with Halo 3, Gears of War, Geometry Wars, Next Splinter Cell, Halo Wars, and exclusive episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV that you won't be playing on the PS3?
