SEGA HD Blowout

Head inside for tons of high definition footage from three of SEGA's upcoming PS3 launch games.

October 17, 2006 - Here's an easy question: what better way to show off SEGA's upcoming PS3 games than to show them in full high-definition video? That's exactly what we decided to do. And thanks to SEGA, who obliged our little HD fantasy, we can offer an updated look at three of its PS3 games, including Virtua Fighter 5, Sonic the Hedgehog and Full Auto 2.

There's really something for everyone. Now if only SEGA could find a way to combine all three of these franchises, that'd be swell. It'd probably trigger the apocalypse, but there's no denying the appeal of wanton destruction mixed with martial arts and bug-eyed animals. For now, the three titles live entirely separate lives. Each promises a unique take on next-generation gameplay, from the hand-to-hand combat of Virtua Fighter 5 to the high-speed shenanigans of Sonic and Full Auto 2. But let's get down to the real point of this piece: tons of HD footage for your viewing pleasure. Head down and start clicking.

Dust off those fighting gloves and bandanas. Virtua Fighter 5 promises to carry the long-running series into the next generation with style to spare. Everything fans have come to expect from the series, like fine-tuned mechanics and impressive visuals, makes a return. Along with all the traditional stuff, SEGA has thrown in a slew of new features. Two new characters will join a roster of 15 well-known combatants, plus there's new character customization feature where players can modify fighters with parts and accessories. And it all looks good thanks to advanced lighting and highly detailed character models. To top it all off, Virtua Fighter 5 on PS3 will be an arcade-perfect port, so fans know they're getting the complete package.

The reigning king of videogame mascots with attitude, Sonic the Hedgehog stands poised for his next generation debut. And like all previous iterations, this one grounds its gameplay on speed. Players will take control of the titular hedgehog, of course, but also two addition characters, Silver and Shadow. The latter starred in his very own game not too long ago, but it's the first time the telekinetic Silver has shown up. He can manipulate all manners of objects, from lightweight crates to hulking cars, tossing them around at will. And, just like the original hedgehog, both Silver and Shadow have a penchant for speeding. These two characters aren't all that's new, however, as there's also a new human, a princess, in dire need of saving.

The PS3 version of Full Auto 2 promises more of the high-speed destruction see in the 360 versions. In addition to improved visuals, the game now lets players change each track dynamically by blowing stuff up. That's right, when players launch missiles at bridges and skyways, they now crumble to pieces and crash onto the streets below. The same thing goes for street level buildings and other structures. All of this should help rival drivers smash, block and otherwise obliterate each other in a whole new way. The PS3 version also comes with a new Arena Mode, where drivers can battle in an enclosed environment. Not only that, it includes six new tracks, along with a total of 25 different cars, ranging from nimble sports models to lumbering utility vehicles.

Free Linux on PS3 this year

Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 will be released for PlayStation 3 in mid-November, the company announced this week.

Yes, this means you'll be able to use your PlayStation 3 as a computer as well as all the things Sony's already offering - and it's all done with the platform holder's backing too.

What's more, if you wait a little while it won't actually cost anything. Terra Soft's "YDL.net" service users (who pay a fee) will be able to get it first, as a PC distribution that allows for the creation of a PS3 install-disc; then two weeks later you'll be able to order ready-made PS3 install discs for a cost; and another two weeks after that the PS3 distribution will be released onto public mirrors.

As well as a single-click install mode for Linux newbies, Terra Soft will include an advanced installer. The operating system itself is based on the Fedora Core 5, with an integrated E17 desktop, and bundled FireFox 1.5.0, Thunderbird 1.5.0, OpenOffice.org 2.0.2 and other applications.

It's based on kernel 2.6.1.6, gcc 3.4.4 and glibc 2.4, apparently (yes, that means nothing to me - leave it), with Cell SDK 1.1 included and Nautilus 2.1.4. Terra Soft also says we'll find "a suite of Personal Accessories, Development Tools; Sound & Video, Internet, and Networking applications" bundled with the OS.

"From the days of the Commodore 64 to modern overclocked and water cooled home computers, a battle has raged between dedicated game boxes and home computers for highest quality game play," says Terra Soft's Owen Stampflee. "PlayStation 3 provides an industry first exceptional Linux OS experience ... and Terra Soft the first Linux OS. I am proud to have played a part in this development."

PS3 e-Dist games list?

An enterprising young person by the name of Elder on PS3forums.com seems to have got his hands on a lot of the press bumf due to emerge at Sony's US Gamers Day event later this week - most notably giving us a better idea of what's likely to be released through the PlayStation 3's e-Distribution service.

Games listed as first party (with screenshots, some preserved on other forums) include Blast Factor, a 1080p shoot-'em-up with self-adjusting difficulty and global rankings, which uses the tilt function of the SIXAXIS controller to help push enemies around the play area and is reportedly in development at Bluepoint Games.

Others on the list are flOw, which was shown off at the Tokyo Game Show (catch up with our impressions elsewhere), Go Sudoku (complete with multiplayer mode), something called Swizzleblocks, Lemmings 2 (apparently a new game and not a port) and one called Criminal Crackdown. Sony hasn't released any previous details on these games, or confirmed anything on the list beyond flOw, we might add, but adding to the veracity of Elder's post were a number of new assets for existing PS3 games like Untold Legends and Full Auto 2.

Third-party e-Distribution games mentioned, meanwhile, included what sound like PlayStation Portable ports - GripShift (an unappreciated little PSP title we rather liked) and "Crash Carnage Ciaos". On the latter, most assumed the last word was a typo for "Chaos" but it also seems possible that the whole thing is a slight twist on Sony Online Entertainment's "Cash Money Chaos". Either way, we'll find out whether those are legit, along with the final, Wheel of Fortune game also mentioned, when Sony's Gamers Day concludes tomorrow...
